Bass Caught at Land Utilization Lake
Photograph of Large mouth Bass caught on artificial lure at L.U. Lake, northwest of Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Lake was stocked 2 years ago and has revealed by an examination of their scales, both the fish are under 2 years old. Bass on left weighed 2.5 lbs and the one on the right weighed 3 lbs. Both ere caught 18 months after the pond was stocked.

Photograph of cattle grazing on 20 acre improved pasture planted in October 1943. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Cattle grazing 20 acre improved pasture planted October 1943. A mixture of alfalfa and created wheat grass was planted. Grazing in 1944 has been at the rate of one cow per acre for about six months." Photograph of strip crops and cover crops on contour for wind and water erosion control. Rye cover crop was seeded immediately after peanuts were dug. Crotalaria in 4 rows, peanuts in 8 rows. Mr. Whit Sides says that the crotalaria prevents soil from blowing after the peanut harvest while also fixing nitrogen and humus to the soil. Where peanuts have already been harvested this year, Mr. Sides says he made from 2 to 3 bushels more per acre from the old crotalaria strips than he did on land where sorghum or other non-leguminous crops were planted last year. Drainage System Construction
Photograph of Improved Drainage Ditch in Fame Bottom Farms Drainage project (see OK-8709 for view of unimproved ditch immediately above and adjoining these two farms). About 20% of the land in Fame Bottom very frequently produces crop failures due to excess water on the fields. Average crop yields on fields not damaged by [unclear] of cotton per acre; 35 pounds corn per acre. Properly drained, the land in this bottom will produce 4 tons of alfalfa would fail. The drainage project benefits 1790 acres, 90% cultivated on 21 farms. Combined length of ditches: 2175 linear yards. OK-8710.

Excellent Crop of Kafir Corn
Photograph of an excellent crop of Kafir corn on contour in former 5 acre area of severely gullied natural draw where owner had never made a crop. An erosion control dam was constructed across the deaw in 1937 and in two years the land was producing crops. To date the draw has silted in approximately 5 feet says Mr. Lucas.

Photograph of Mrs. B.B. Hornsby (center) pouring coffee for her husband (left) and son, Jack (right), after the men have spent a hard day in the fields. Jack, age 18, looks over the bonds purchased by his father during the 4th War Loan Drive. The Hornsby family has purchased a total of $3,370 in bonds. Mr. Hornsby says, it all come off the farm where he has established a complete soil and moisture conservation program, "Without what I have done in trying to save my poor, old land, I couldn't have done it, boys. I couldn't have done it farming the old way." OK-8706.

Photograph of terrace outlet channel under construction. Channel will be widened, shaped and sodded. Vegetation will be allowed to become well-established before terrace water is emptied into it. Terraces will be constructed in the field and will empty into channel from both sides. Mr. Ray Murrell, Work Unit Conservationist, and Mr. Paul Hertzler, farm owner, examine a conservation survey map on which the location of the channel and terraces are indicated. OK-8916.
