Tests of a Thermal Ice-Prevention System for a Wing Leading-Edge Landing-Light Installation (open access)

Tests of a Thermal Ice-Prevention System for a Wing Leading-Edge Landing-Light Installation

Report discussing the creation of a thermal ice-prevention system of a bomber-type airplane to provide protection against ice and fog formations on the transparent fairing over the landing light in the wing leading edge. A comparison between the design performance and actual performance showed that the outer-surface heat-transfer coefficient was correctly predicted, but the inner-surface heat-transfer coefficient was four times as large, leading to failure of the plastic fairing.

Wall interference in a two-dimensional-flow wind tunnel with consideration of the effect of compressibility (open access)

Wall interference in a two-dimensional-flow wind tunnel with consideration of the effect of compressibility

Report presenting tunnel-wall corrections for an airfoil of finite thickness and camber in a two-dimensional-flow wind tunnel. The theory takes account of the effects of the wake of the airfoil and of the compressibility of the fluid and is based on the assumption that the chord of the airfoil is small in comparison with the height of the tunnel. The theoretical results are compared with the small amount of low-speed experimental data available and agreement is seen to be satisfactory, even for relatively large values of the chord-height ratio.

Health Hazard From a Long-Lived Rare Gas Activity (open access)

Health Hazard From a Long-Lived Rare Gas Activity

In considering the health hazard of long-lived rare gas activity as a complication of the stack gas problem, the author evaluates briefly two physical-physiological conditions: first, that the body is subjected to external radiation from an infinite cloud of activity, and, second, that the gaseous activity is respired and its daughter products are deposited in the lungs. It is concluded that no additional hazard is to be expected from the long-lived gaseous activity.

Melting Point -- Composition Diagrams in the U-UBr3 System (open access)

Melting Point -- Composition Diagrams in the U-UBr3 System

Abstract. A portion of the liquid-solid phase equilibrium region of the system U-UBr3 has been investigated by the method of thermal analysis. Uranium tribromide was prepared by introducing bromine vapor into a bulb containing finely divided uranium formed from the hydride. Cooling curves were obtained with tribromide and then with various compositions of tribromide and uranium. the information obtained showed that no solid sub halide exists but that the metal was soluble in the halide.

Neutron Distribution Around a black Sphere with a Gap (open access)

Neutron Distribution Around a black Sphere with a Gap

Abstract. Successive approximations ae obtained from transport theory for the neutron distribution around a black sphere surrounded by a spherical gap and a non-absorbing medium extending to infinity. Six cases are calculated numerically to show the difference between this treatment and simple diffusion theory. The extrapolation distance and a quantity that is essentially the thermal utilization are calculated in different approximations. It is found that the neutron density in the gap, instead of being a constant as predicted by the simple theory, may vary by a factor of one-third in cases of practical interest.

On the Statistics of Rod Warping (open access)

On the Statistics of Rod Warping

Abstract. The probability of exceeding assigned values of displacements or forces in simple rod models assembled from slugs picked at random is discussed, and some estimate for the statistical gain resulting from use of shorter slugs is obtained. The probability that a rod with self-warping will touch the top of the tube appears great enough to justify a recommendation of the use of top ribs.

Wind Tunnel Investigation of the Effects of Slot Shape and Flap Location on the Characteristics of a Low-Drag Airfoil Equipped with a 0.25-Chord Slotted Flap (open access)

Wind Tunnel Investigation of the Effects of Slot Shape and Flap Location on the Characteristics of a Low-Drag Airfoil Equipped with a 0.25-Chord Slotted Flap

Tests were conducted at dynamic pressure of 50 lb per square foot with lift drag and pitch moment measurements throughout useful angle of attack range for constant flap deflection and position of a low-drag airfoil. Two slots were investigated and practical flap paths were selected for each Slot shape had a negligible effect on the maximum lift coefficient flap deflected, the rounded-entry slot had lower profile drag.

High-Speed Wind-Tunnel Tests of Semispan Horizontal Tails With Fabric-Covered and Metal-Covered Elevators for a Bomber Airplane (open access)

High-Speed Wind-Tunnel Tests of Semispan Horizontal Tails With Fabric-Covered and Metal-Covered Elevators for a Bomber Airplane

"This report contains the results of tests of a full-scale semispan horizontal tail plane of a bomber airplane. The effects of fabric distortion on the aerodynamic characteristics of the elevator are determined by comparing the aerodynamic characteristics of a fabric-covered elevator with those of a metal-covered elevator. In addition, the results of cutting holes in the balance seal, the effect of fixing transition, the tab effectiveness both sealed and unsealed, and the section drag of this tail plane are presented" (p. 1).

Flight Tests of the High-Speed Performance of a P-51B Airplane (AAF No. 43-12105)

Report discussing testing to check the improvement of 3 or 4 miles per hour in the maximum speed of the P-51B airplane as a result of sealing the wing-gun access doors and flap-spar lightening holes. Extension of Useful Operating Range of Axial-Flow Compressors by Use of Adjustable Stator Blades (open access)

Extension of Useful Operating Range of Axial-Flow Compressors by Use of Adjustable Stator Blades

"A theory has been developed for resetting the blade angles of an axial-flow compressor in order to improve the performance at speeds and flows other than the design and thus extend the useful operating range of the compressor. The theory is readily applicable to the resetting of both rotor and stator blades or to the resetting of only the stator blades and is based on adjustment of the blade angles to obtain lift coefficients at which the blades will operate efficiently. Calculations were made for resetting the stator blades of the NACA eight-stage axial-flow compressor for 75 percent of design speed and a series of load coefficients ranging from 0.28 to 0.70 with rotor blades left at the design setting" (p. 425).

The relation between spanwise variations in the critical Mach number and spanwise load distributions (open access)

The relation between spanwise variations in the critical Mach number and spanwise load distributions

"Data are presented to show the changes that occur in the spanwise load distributions on wings when the critical Mach number is exceeded. The data indicate that the magnitude of the changes in spanwise load distribution varies with the magnitude of the spanwise variation in the critical Mach numbers of the sections. Means of reducing the magnitudes of such changes are considered" (p. 1).

Charts for the determination of wing torsional stiffness required for specified rolling characteristics or aileron reversal speed

"A series of charts are presented by which the wing torsional stiffness required to meet a given standard of rolling effectiveness may be quickly determined. The charts may also be used to obtain quickly the aileron reversal speed and the variation of the loss in rolling effectiveness with airspeed. The charts apply to linearly tapered wings and elliptical wings of tubular-shell construction having various aspect ratios with aileron span and location of ailerons as variables" (p. 457).
