Charts for rapid analysis of 45 degree strain-rosette data (open access)

Charts for rapid analysis of 45 degree strain-rosette data

From Summary: "Charts are presented for rapidly determining the principal strains and stresses, the maximum shear strain and stress, and the orientation of principal axes from data on 45 degree strain rosettes. The charts may be used for analyzing the conventional data consisting of strains measured along three gage lines 45 degrees apart, but their application is more direct if the rosette data are obtained by means of special circuits that require the use of four gages 45 degrees apart."

Cowling and Cooling Tests of a Fleetwings Model 33 Airplane in Flight

Report presenting an investigation of the cooling of a Franklin 6-AC-29S horizontally opposed cylinder air-cooled engine installed in a Fleetwings model 33 trainer. The cowling on the airplane did not provide satisfactory cooling, but several alterations were tested, including with cylinder baffles. Results regarding engine cooling, aerodynamics of the cowling installation, and predicted versus actual cowling performance are provided.

Effect of Changes in Aileron Rigging on the Stick Forces of a High-Speed Fighter Airplane (open access)

Effect of Changes in Aileron Rigging on the Stick Forces of a High-Speed Fighter Airplane

"The effects of changes in aileron rigging between 2 deg up and 2 deg down on the stick forces were determined from wind-tunnel data for a finite-span wing model. These effects were investigated for ailerons deflecting equally in both directions and linearly with stick deflection. Data were analyzed for a Frise, a sealed internally balanced, and a beveled-trailing-edge aileron" (p. 1).

The Effect of Internal Pressure on the Buckling Stress of Thin-Walled Circular Cylinders Under Torsion

"The results of a series of tests to determine the effect of internal pressure on the buckling load of a thin cylinder under an applied torque indicated that internal pressure raises the shear buckling stress. The experimental results were analyzed with the aid of previously developed theory and a simple interaction formula was derived" (p. 1).

Effect of Mach Number on Position Error as Applied to a Pitot-Static Tube Located 0.55 Chord Ahead of an Airplane Wing (open access)

Effect of Mach Number on Position Error as Applied to a Pitot-Static Tube Located 0.55 Chord Ahead of an Airplane Wing

"The effect on static-pressure measurements of locating a pitot-static tube 0.55 chord ahead of an airfoil section has been investigated. The tests were conducted in the NACA 24-inch high-speed tunnel on airfoil sections of various thickness ratios over a large range of Mach number. The results show that for a wing having a thickness ratio of 0.15 the measured Mach number, determined from a pitot-static-tube reading, is approximately 0.01 too low at a stream Mach number of 0.4 and approximately 0.03 too low at a Mach number of 0.8" (p. 1).
