Piloting of flying boats with special reference to porpoising and skipping (open access)

Piloting of flying boats with special reference to porpoising and skipping

From Summary: "The various types of hydrodynamic instability - including porpoising, skipping, and yawing - that may be encountered during take-off or landing of a flying boat are described and the piloting technique required for efficient take-offs and landings is discussed. Suggestions are made for assisting a pilot to become familiar with the take-off and landing qualities of a flying boat that is new to him."

Researches on the Piston Ring (open access)

Researches on the Piston Ring

"In internal combustion engines, steam engines, air compressors, and so forth, the piston ring plays an important role. Especially, the recent development of Diesel engines which require a high compression pressure for their working, makes, nowadays, the packing action of the piston ring far more important than ever. Though a number of papers have been published in regard to researches on the problem of the piston ring, none has yet dealt with an exact measurement of pressure exerted on the cylinder wall at any given point of the ring" (p. 1).

Some Notes on the Determination of the Stick-Free Neutral Point from Wind-Tunnel Data

"Two graphical methods are presented for determining the stick-free neutral point, and they are extensions of the methods commonly used to determine the stick-free neutral point. A mathematical formula for computing the stick-free neutral point is also given. These methods may be applied to determine approximately the increase in tail size necessary to shift the neutral point (stick fixed or free) to any desired location on an airplane having inadequate longitudinal stability" (p. 1).

Tests of a 1/17-scale model of the XBDR-1 airplane in the NACA gust tunnel

Report presenting tests in the gust tunnel on a scale model of the XBDR-1 airplane to verify the calculated effective gust factor. Tests were made for three gust shapes, one forward velocity, and one wing loading. The test results and analysis were in good agreement and the results of the analysis indicated that there was an appreciable change in effective gust factor for the center-of-gravity movement considered.

Tests of Beams Having Webs With Large Circular Lightening Holes (open access)

Tests of Beams Having Webs With Large Circular Lightening Holes

"Strength tests were made on two sets of beams having webs with large circular lightening holes. The main conclusion drawn from the tests is that allowable web stressed derived from pure shear tests and allowable flange stresses derived from compression tests cannot be applied in the design of beams without making corrections for interaction" (p. 1). Pure shear tests and beam tests were performed and the circumstances of failure were investigated.

A Theoretical Investigation of Longitudinal Stability of Airplanes With Free Controls Including Effect of Friction in Control System

"The relation between the elevator hinge-moment parameters and the control forces for changes in forward speed and in maneuvers is shown for several values of static stability and elevator mass balance" (p. 1). Factors affecting stability positively and negatively are presented and potential modifications to the elevator control system are provided. The amount of solid friction present was found to be one of the greatest predictors of instability.
