Test Results on Bias Setting for the Chicago Scaler Offner Models

Abstract: The counting accuracy of the Chicago Scalers, Models 961A and 961B, is a function of the bias setting of the limiter (V2). this report gives quantitative data supporting this thesis. A method of making bias settings is suggested. These tests were run at the suggestion of Mr. V. C. Hanson.

Uranium Oxide Slurry Pumping Experiments

Abstract: Experiments on colloid milling and pumping show that uranium trioxide, when carefully dehydrated, can be dispersed in water to form a relatively stable slurry, suitable for a homogeneous slurry pile. At temperatures considerably below those of anticipated pile operation particle size growth occurs attended by increase in settling rate and decrease in viscosity. Theses properties of the slurries may be strongly affected by impurities present as well as by special operating conditions.

Report presenting an investigation in the two-dimensional low-turbulence pressure tunnel to determine the aileron effectiveness of 0.20-airfoil-chord plain ailerons of true airfoil contour on three different airfoil sections. The aileron effectiveness parameter decreased very slightly with an increase in airfoil thickness. Results regarding the plain-airfoil section characteristics, aileron effectiveness, lift characteristics, and effects of airfoil thickness are provided.

NACA Investigation of a Jet-Propulsion System Applicable to Flight

"Following a brief history of the NACA investigation of jet-propulsion, a discussion is given of the general investigation and analyses leading to the construction of the jet-propulsion ground-test mock-up. The results of burning experiments and of test measurements designed to allow quantitative flight-performance predictions of the system are presented and correlated with calculations. These calculations are then used to determine the performance of the system on the ground and in the air at various speeds and altitudes under various burning conditions. The application of the system to an experimental airplane is described and some performance predictions for this airplane are made" (p. 1).

Axial Fatigue of 10 Airplane Wing-Beam Specimens by the Resonance Method

Note presenting axial fatigue tests made by the resonance method on 10 specimens from airplane wing beams. The specimens contained several types of stress raiser, such as rivets, holes, fittings, splices, reinforcing plates, and so forth. The results show a greater fatigue stress concentration factor for the wing-beam specimens than for drilled coupons machined from the flanges or for parallel strip coupons containing idle rivets.

Axial Fatigue Tests at Zero Mean Stress of 24S-T Aluminum-Alloy Sheet With and Without a Circular Hole

"Axial fatigue tests were made on 189 coupon specimens of 0.032-inch 24S-T aluminum-alloy sheet and a few supplementary specimens of 0.004-inch sheet. The mean load was zero. The specimens were restrained against lateral buckling by lubricated solid guides described in a previous report on this project. About two-thirds of the 0.032-inch specimens were plain coupons nominally free from stress raisers. The remainder contained a 0.1285-inch drilled hole at the center where the reduced section was 0.5 inch wide" (p. 1).

Report presenting an investigation of the knock-limited performance of leaded blends of 12 pure aromatic hydrocarbons in a full-scale aircraft-engine cylinder at CRC simulated cruise and take-off conditions to determine the antiknock effectiveness of additions of pure compounds to aviation fuels. Results indicated that all of the hydrocarbons increased the knock limit of the base fuel except for 2 of them.

The Behavior of Some Solid Materials Under Pile Operating Conditions

Technical report abstract. The present state of knowledge concerning the effect of pile radiation on a variety of solid materials is reviewed. Radiation corrosion will not be a serious hazard for aluminum or stainless steel but it can be for iron or lead if either are exposed to water. Apart from corrosion the principal uncertainty is in regard to the Wigner effect on the behavior of metals. There is at present no ground for optimism regarding the behavior of tuballoy. The effect on aluminum or a bonding material while less severe must also be considered serious. The expectation in regard to graphite is that its behavior will not cause trouble during the first 100 days of operation although serious troubles will probably arise within two years of operation. Organic materials can be used safely only in regions of limited exposure.

Experimental constriction effects in high-speed wind tunnels

From Summary: "An investigation has been conducted to determine the possible extent of effects of wind-tunnel constriction at high speeds for airfoils of various thickness-to-chord ratios at or near zero lift. The results indicate that a limiting test Mach number exists which is principally a function of the ratio of model thickness to tunnel height. At high Mach numbers serious constriction effects occur; these effects are of such a nature that the standard calibration methods given speeds much lower than the actual test speeds."

Report presenting testing in the two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnels on a 24-inch-chord model of the NACA 66(215)-116 a = 0.6 airfoil with a 0.25-chord slotted flap. The optimum flap pivot positions were found for three different conditions. The conditions were determined from a consideration of the landing, take-off, and strafing requirements of the airplane.
