A report which investigated vacuum distilation, entrainer gas distillation, and entrainer gas plus bromine vapor distillation.

Report presenting wind tunnel tests of NACA 65(216)-420 and 66(218)-420 airfoils at speeds up to and slightly above the critical. Section coefficients of lift, drag, and pitching-moment and extensive pressure-distribution data are presented. The critical speed for these airfoils at their design life coefficient of 0.4 is shown to be about 460 miles per hour at seal level and about 415 miles per hour at 25,000 feet altitude.

Aluminum oxide occupies a larger volume than the aluminum it contains would fill as metal, consequently, the assumption has been made that holes in metallic aluminum would close by a sufficient amount of oxidation. Therefore, we were asked to investigate the rate of plug formation under conditions to be expected in the pile. For the latter we were requested to approach the pile conditions as nearly as we could by employing the Chicago cyclotron. It seems to us that the problem divides itself into two separate questions: (1) under what conditions may holes be expected to close? (2) if holes do close how much corrosion of uranium may be expected before the closure becomes impervious to water vapor? In this report only the first question is considered. The experiments and theory coupled with the data collected by other workers on the project definitely define the limits within which pores in the aluminum cans may be expected to close by an oxidation process. Under the most favorable conditions only small holes may be sealed in this manner. In the large majority of the cases the holes not only fail to close but become larger.

Report discusses the maximum lift coefficients for conventional and tailless airplanes in the gliding and landing conditions. Three areas are used to calculate the coefficients: wing area alone, wing area plus horizontal-tail area, and wing area plus horizontal- and vertical-tail areas.

Technical report. The object of the research is to determine the procedure and equipment for the preparation of U233 on a semi-works scale. The general proposed procedure is that thorium carbonate in aluminum cans will be irradiated with pile neutrons. The Pa233 resulting from neutron absorption the Th232 and the decay of Th233 will be extraction from 99% of the thorium and the natural U in thorium by MnO2 precipitations. The Pa233 will then be allowed to decay to U233 which in turn will be isolated from the remaining Th and partially decayed Pa233 by ether extraction.

Report issued by the Bureau of Mines discussing the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania. History, geology, and mining methods of the anthracite fields are presented. This report includes tables, illustrations, and maps.

Report presenting testing in the 19-foot pressure tunnel of a scale semispan model of the XTB2D-1 airplane wing and fuselage combination. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the optimum position of the double-slotted flap, the characteristics of the full-span flaps at various deflections in their fully extended position, the effectiveness of deflecting the full-span flaps to small positive angles as a camber changing feature, the stalling characteristics of the wing, and the effectiveness of the flap as a brake when deflected to negative angles.

Report presenting charts showing the rotor profile drag-lift ratio for a helicopter rotor operating in forward flight and having hinged rectangular untwisted blades. The charts are given for a range of power input covering glides, level flight, and moderate rates of climb. A drag curve was used for preparing the charts, and the curve is compared with experimental curves for typical airfoils.

Report presenting a note in two parts regarding simplified truss stability criteria. The first part covers the development of simplified criteria for the stability of planar pin-jointed trusses against buckling in the plane of the truss. The second part constitutes a report on tests carried out to verify the validity of the criteria developed in part one.
