Hanford Engineer Works monthly report, July 1944 (open access)

Hanford Engineer Works monthly report, July 1944

This progress report discusses activities at Hanford Engineer Works for the month of July, 1944. The organization size increased rapidly in July, jumping from 1384 to 1886, an increase of 502 employees. Shortages existed on special lines such as electricians, instrument mechanics, and power operators. The opportunities to interview and employ Construction personnel improved as the Construction, organization moved past its peak employment figure. 269 houses were completed in Richland and 370 occupancies were reported, reducing the backlog of empty houses due to slow furniture movements. A total of 1530 houses or 35.6% of the village is now occupied. The overall canning yield increased from 63% to 75% while production leveled off at approximately two-thirds of design capacity. The metal machining operation and the test pile operated on a one shift-six day per week basis. The portion of the 100-B Area from the pump house through the filter plant and including the Power House was taken over by Operations on July 25. The Power House in the 200-W Area was started and flushing of process lines with water and steam got under way in the canyon. A new department was formed to control the Protection activities of the plant.

Classified information required by operators and others exposed to radiation hazards (open access)

Classified information required by operators and others exposed to radiation hazards

Information required by operators exposed to radiation hazards is discussed. All areas of the plant are subjected to radiation hazards similar to those in the radium industry. Personnel in these areas are required to wear pencil meters and special badges that are evidently not solely for identification. They are required to submit to medical examinations more stringent and frequent than usual. They are required to wear heavy gloves in one location, thin gloves in another, disposable hats or rubbers in another. They are required to stay away from familiar objects that they could handle a few days before. They observe health instrument men making readings at points not tangibly influenced by the operations. Under these circumstances, operators cannot perform their duties intelligently without being advised of the general nature of the risks involved. Since the general beta and gamma hazard occurs at nearly all points and cannot reasonably be concealed, this is the feature selected for general information. The special hazard of 105 Building can then be concealed, and the origin, but not the nature of the hazard in 231 likewise concealed.

Preparation of Carrier Free Zr-Cb Tracer, Problem Assignment No. 263-X61C, Progress Report (open access)

Preparation of Carrier Free Zr-Cb Tracer, Problem Assignment No. 263-X61C, Progress Report

Technical report abstract. A rapid procedure for the preparation of very pure carrier-free Zr and Nb tracer involves the chloroform extraction of the cupferrides of Zr and Nb activities from process solutions. Zr and Nb form very stable chloroform soluble cupferrides in acid solutions (CK-993) and are separated from other fission elements almost quantitatively to yield pure mixture of Zr and Nb activity. A minimum of operations is required and the method is easily adaptable to remote control.

Electrolytic Production of Uranium from Solutions of its Tribromide in Fused Salts (open access)

Electrolytic Production of Uranium from Solutions of its Tribromide in Fused Salts

Abstract. the electrodeposition of uranium metal, in the form of tree-like deposits, from molten strontium halide baths is described. Under the best conditions studied, approximately 40% recovery is attained. Freedom from side-reactions of the reduced uranium with anode products and/or refractory materials, and high cathode current densities appear to be essential to the success of the process. the refining of uranium under similar conditions appears to occur quite readily, with approximately 50% current efficiency. The preparation of UI3 is also described.

The Distribution of Thermal Neutrons in a Slug with Thick End Caps (open access)

The Distribution of Thermal Neutrons in a Slug with Thick End Caps

The distribution of thermal neutrons in a W slug having a one centimeter aluminum end cap has been calculated on the basis of simple diffusion theory. It is found that the average neutron density, and therefore the power output, at the end of the slug is about 34% higher than the density far from the end cap. This result agrees well with the recent Argonne pile experiments (CP-1729).

Warping Instability in Long Rods (open access)

Warping Instability in Long Rods

Abstract. If a pile rod gets bowed within its cooling tube it becomes warmer on the side which approaches the tube wall, and thermal expansion tends to warp it in the same direction as the original displacement. This was discussed roughly in N-601, and it was there concluded that the mechanism was not important for an isolated short slug. In connection with current development of continuous jacket (cartridge) assemblies, it seems desirable to look at this question again. In this case it is possible that the effect may be of some concern.

Scale and Turbulence Effects on the Lift and Drag Characteristics of the NACA 65(Sub 3)-418, A=1.0 Airfoil Section (open access)

Scale and Turbulence Effects on the Lift and Drag Characteristics of the NACA 65(Sub 3)-418, A=1.0 Airfoil Section

Wind-tunnel tests, investigating low drag wing performance in small-scale tests, showed a large increase in minimum drag coefficient, and a decrease of maximum lift coefficient occurred with decreasing Reynolds Number above certain designated values. The lift-curve slope varied up to 6% between high and low turbulence levels. Low Reynolds Number test data are unreliable for low drag airfoils either to estimate full-scale characteristics or to determine merits of airfoils for higher Reynolds numbers.

The aileron effectiveness parameter decreased very slightly with an increase in airfoil thickness. Results regarding the plain-airfoil section characteristics, aileron effectiveness, lift characteristics, and effects of airfoil thickness are provided.

Performance of NACA eight-stage axial-flow compressor designed on the basis of airfoil theory

"The NACA has conducted an investigation to determine the performance that can be obtained from a multistage axial-flow compressor based on airfoil research. A theory was developed; an eight-stage axial-flow compressor was designed, constructed, and tested. The performance of the compressor was determined for speeds from 5000 to 14,000 r.p.m with varying air flow at each speed" (p. 81).

Calculations of Intake-Air Cooling Resulting From Water Injection and of Water Recovery From Exhaust Gas

Report discussing some calculations made for the effects of water in cooling the inlet air of aircraft-engine cylinders. From Summary: "The estimates indicate that the cooling effect of the water on the inlet air can be more extensive than the cooling now obtained with the intercoolers or aftercoolers in the air-induction system. In connection with water recovery from the exhaust gas, the estimates indicate that sufficient water can be recovered from 50 percent of the exhaust gas to provide an inducted water-fuel ratio of 0.5."

Performance Characteristics of Journal Bearings With Forced-Feed Lubrication

"Friction and heat-dissipation data are presented for use in determining the load-carrying capacity of 2- by 1.25-inch bearings with the following types of lining: copper-lead, lead-indium-coated silver, and lead-coated copper-lead. The tests were made in a four-bearing friction machine and covered operation with three clearances using three oils of different viscosity at three oil-inlet temperatures. Values are computed to indicate the safe loads at various speeds for bearings lined with each of the three types of material" (p. 1).
