Aunt China and Uncle Harv

Photograph of Aunt China and Uncle Harv Sparks in their home living room. Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Narrative by Junebug Clark. China and Harv spent their lives together in this two room log cabin. No electricity. No Central Heat. No indoor plumbing, but all together they had a lot. Joe Clark’s wife, Bernice, would often tell the story of her first trip outside of Michigan, her honeymoon with Joe, and the day and night they spent with Aunt China and Uncle Harv. “It was getting late and Joe and I retired to the spare room,” Bernice would start. “Aunt Chinahanded me a coal oil lantern and a feather down quilt. As I started to close the door to their spare room, Aunt China, sensing that I fet a long way from home, bent toward me and whispered, “Now Bernice, if there is anything you need while you are here, do not hesitate to ask. Because Harv and I can show you how to get along without it.” Jb. Photo by: Joe Clark, HBSS. Signed by: Joe Clark, HBSS Clark PhotoFile: 7305-11p
