A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Post Commander, Parramore Post No. 57, The American Legion, Abilene, Texas, from Sidney C. Mason, Lieut. Col., 142nd Infantry, Adjutant General's Department, State of Texas, Austin, dated October 17, 1940. Mason acknowledges the receipt of the application for authority to organize units of the Texas Defense Guard. He suggests that Carswell modify the program to consist of three companies at Abilene and one at Merkel thereby making one complete battalion in that vicinity.

Acknowledgement of the receipt of the application to organize a unit of the Texas Defense Guard noting the issuance of a formal Letter of Approval has been delayed due to the volume of applications, due to the emergency work caused by the administration of the Selective Service Act and due to the pending mobilization of the Texas National Guard. Pending final approval, Mason authorizes Carswell to proceed with preliminary organizational work.

Col., 142nd Infantry, Asst. to Adjutant General, Adjutant General's Department, State of Texas, Austin. Reply letter from Mason, advising of the compliance with Carswell's request of October 24; the companies commanded by Brownlee and Carswell have been eliminated but, in view of the forecasted attitude of the War Department, the application may be delayed. Enclosure includes: Personal note written to Mr. T. N. Carswell from Sid--Sidney C. Mason reminding Carswell of a time when Wilson Gunn, one bullsnake and the writer "had to do with you around the hallowed portals of old Cowden Hall". [Cowden Hall - men's dormitory, Simmons College, Abilene, Texas].
