Carswell acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Camp and expresses his appreciation for the "spirit" of the letter. He writes, "I am checking out today and will begin Monday morning with my own business, wholesale paper."

A letter addressed to T. N. Carswell from R. T. Shindler, Shindler Drug Company, Perryton, Texas, dated October 9, 1938. Shindler advises that he noticed Carswell had resigned as the Chamber of Commerce Secretary and requests to know of his plans for the future. He offers his very best wishes in any thing that Carswell undertakes.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from John Camp, The Ohio Oil Co., Houston, Texas, dated September 8, 1938. Camp notes his surprise at Carswell's retirement as Secretary of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce and expresses his regret for the City's loss stating that in his opinion Carswell "as Secretary, contributed more toward the welfare of the town than any other citizen", and wishes him success in his new business.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Secretary-Manager, Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas from Morris Sheppard, United States Senate, dated August 20, 1938. Sheppard acknowledges his receipt of the "communication" from Carswell and expresses his pleasure in having visited with Carswell while he was in Washington. He acknowledges that Carswell is leaving the Chamber of Commerce on September 1 wishing him success and adds, in a handwritten postscript, that he prizes Carswell's friendship more than he can express.

A letter written to Hon. T. N. Carswell c/o Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas from Jas. P. Stinson, Abilene, Texas, dated September 1, 1938. Stinson expresses his pleasure at having heard the tribute paid to Carswell at the Lions Club, today, noting that he agreed with every word and adds more praise detailing Carswell's work through the years. He invites him to be his guest at the Rotary Club, tomorrow.

A letter written to Mildred Moody, Austin, Texas from T. N. Carswell, dated June 24, 1938. Carswell advises that he is leaving the Chamber of Commerce and is sending files of her work while she was at the Chamber and requests her thoughts on how to dispose of funds collected while he was President of the Alumni Association for a Memorial Building. He advises that he suggested to Truett [E. T. Compere] that they might ask Prexy [J. D. Sandefer].

A letter written to Mr. & Mrs. F. T. Carson, Washington, D. C. from T. N. Carswell, dated April 23, 1938. Carswell explains his delay in writing, due to flu, and expresses his enjoyment in having seen them when in Washington, of seeing Earl and his family and meeting their friend, Mrs. Ginn.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Clifton Forge, Virginia from Russell S. Stephens, Abilene Printing & Stationery Co., dated April 12, 1938. Humorous gab regarding his own reaction to Charlie Barnes' oil deal. He expresses his dismay that Carswell has flu deeming it unwise to undertake a return trip until he has recovered. He advises that heavy snow killed the fruit but that in spite of the loss they "will have a fine year in West Texas". He expresses his hope that Carswell has an early recovery and returns soon "full of enthusiasm and zeal for your adopted West Texas home".

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Clifton Forge, Virginia from Chas. W. Barnes, dated April 12, 1938. Barnes advises Carswell that it is unwise to undertake a return trip after the flu until he has regained all his strength. He advises that the cold spell is causing slowed business, that the snow is not damaging the crops but did kill the fruit and gardens and then dangles a few remarks regarding a business deal he made assuring that he will hold a part of it for Carswell if he is interested.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from W. W. Hair, Mayor, The City of Abilene, Abilene, Texas dated December 23, 1938. Hair expresses his appreciation and congratulations to Carswell and his Committee on the good work done in preparing a new traffic ordinance for the City of Abilene.

A letter written to Mr. J. C. Hunter, President, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, from T. N. Carswell, dated September 10, 1938. Letter of resignation by Carswell from the Abilene Chamber of Commerce confirming that he is turning over to Mr. Gruver the records of the office.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Secretary-Manager, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas, from Rupert, R. H. Johnson & Co., New York, dated July 11, 1938. Johnson acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Carswell and confirms that Mr. Dillingham called but that he did not happen to be in the office. He confirms that Brown-Crumer is a good house and offers to assist in having the bonds turned in under the Plan assuring Carswell that he would be very glad to do so.

A letter written to Mr. R. H. Johnson, New York City, N. Y., from T. N. Carswell, Sec.-Mgr. [Abilene Chamber of Commerce], dated July 6, 1938. Carswell expresses his appreciation for the information Johnson supplied and advises him that Mr. Dillingham had put in a call to him. He confirms that the Brown Crumer Company was awarded the job at a fee approximating 1%.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Sec.-Mgr., Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas, from Rupert H. Johnson, R. H. Johnson & Co., New York, dated June 25, 1938. Johnson acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Carswell and advises that the problem which the City of Abilene faces seems to him to be two-fold and proceeds to discuss the two problems suggesting possible solutions by citing the experiences of other cities. He advises of an enclosed clipping regarding the financing of Pittston, Pennsylvania. The reverse side of the last page of this letter includes calculations handwritten by T. N. Carswell. Typewritten on R. H. Johnson & Co. letterhead bearing OLD CHESTER BOND watermark; subsequent pages bear ETON BOND watermark.

A letter written to Rupert H. Johnson, New York City, New York, from T. N. Carswell, Sec.-Mgr. [Abilene Chamber of Commerce], dated June 22, 1938. Carswell restates to Johnson, as per their telephone conversation, that he is enclosing a condensed financial statement of Abilene and, also, a newspaper account of a meeting the night before. Carswell advises of the approximate bond valuations, the option of a utilities rate increase and his assurance that if Johnson decides not to try for the refunding proposition that he will be glad to pay for his counsel and advice.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Secretary, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas, from Rupert H. Johnson & Co., New York, dated June 17, 1938. Johnson replies to the letter from Carswell of June 15th and promotes his company's experience in arranging refunding programs for cities and towns. He addresses an answer for Abilene's bond issue under the assumption that the City of Abilene is able to pay interest on its debt then cites examples of other cities and the manner in which their bond issues were handled.

A letter written to Mr. Thomas N. Carswell, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas, from Rupert H. Johnson & Co., New York, dated May 12, 1938. Johnson acknowledges his receipt of a letter from Carswell which contained a signed Power of Attorney which has been solicited by the Committee in Reorganization proceedings of the Standard Commercial Tobacco Company. He advises that he will investigate the Committee to find if they are people of standing. Johnson assures Carswell that it is no trouble for his company to hold securities for customers and that he is glad to advise him on the investment of any funds that he may have available from time to time. "I happen to own 100-acre farm in Jones County and also mineral rights on 55 acres of land in another part of the County."

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Merchants Paper Co, Abilene, Texas, from Thos. W. Peck, Secretary, Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Company, Parchment, Kalamazoo, Michigan, dated Nobember 10, 1938. Peck replies to Carswell confiming there are some very definite reasons for their firm attitude toward his account suggesting an ulterior force in Carswell's personnel which may not be working for the best interests of the Company.

A letter written to Mr. Carswell, from Thos. W. Peck, Secretary, Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Company, Parchment, Kalamazoo, Michigan, dated November 16, 1938. Peck advises Carswell regarding a letter that was received by them and by other creditors. He advises that Carswell has a fine opportunity in Abilene and they are very hopeful that nothing will undermine it.

A letter written to Mr. Frank Grimes, Editor, Abilene Daily Reporter, Abilene, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, dated September 10, 1938. Carswell expresses his deep appreciation to Grimes for the sentiment expressed in the editorial referring to his accomplishments during his connection with the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Secretary-Manager, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, from John H. Hewlett, Colleen Moore's Doll House, Atlanta, Georgia, dated August 10, 1938. Hewlett expresses his regret that Carswell is retiring from the Chamber of Commerce before he can route the Doll House to Abilene.
