Hydrodynamic and Aerodynamic Tests of Four Models of Outboard Floats: (N.A.C.A. Models 51-A, 51-B, 51-C, and 51-D)
Four models of outboard floats (N.A.C.A. models 51-A, 51-B, 51-C, and 51-D) were tested in the N.A.C.A. tank to determine their hydrodynamic characteristics and in the 20-foot wind tunnel to determine their aerodynamic drag. The results of the tests, together with comparisons of them, are presented in the form of charts. From the comparisons, the order of merit of the models is estimated for each factor considered. The best compromise between the various factors seems to be given by model 51-D. This model is the only one in the series with a transverse step.

The Aerodynamic Drag of Five Models of Side Floats N.A.C.A. Models 51-E, 51-F, 51-G, 51-H, 51-J
"The drag of five models of side floats was measured in the N.A.C.A. 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel. The most promising method of reducing the drag of floats indicated by these tests is lowering the angle at which the floats are rigged. The addition of a step to a float does not always increase the drag in the flying range, floats with steps sometimes having lower drag than similar floats without steps" (p. 1).

A general tank test of a model of the hull of the Pem-1 flying boat including a special working chart for the determination of hull performance
The results of a general tank test of a 1/6 full-size model of the hull of the P3M-1 flying boat (N.A.C.A. model 18) are given in non-dimensional form. In addition to the usual curves, the results are presented in a new form that makes it possible to apply them more conveniently than in the forms previously used. The resistance was compared with that of N.A.C.A. models 11-C and 26(Sikorsky S-40) and was found to be generally less than the resistance of either.

Noise From Propellers With Symmetrical Sections at Zero Blade Angle, 2
"In a previous paper (Technical Note No. 605), a theory was developed that required an empirical relation to calculate sound pressures for the higher harmonics. Further investigation indicated that the modified theory agrees with experiment and that the empirical relation was due to an interference phenomenon peculiar to the test arrangement used. Comparison is made between the test results for a two-blade arrangement and the theory" (p. 1).

Comparison of free-spinning wind-tunnel results with corresponding full-scale spin results
Report presenting a study of comparable information on full-scale spinning results and NACA free-spinning wind-tunnel results in order to determine the degree of reliability of tunnel results in predicting the spinning behavior of airplanes. Satisfactory agreement between model and airplane was found in 16 instances and disagreement was found in 5 instances.

Distribution of Temperatures Over an Airplane Wing With Reference to the Phenomena of Ice Formation
The results obtained from the present study of temperature distribution over an airplane wing afford means for making the following statements as regards the conditions of ice accretion and the use of a thermic anti-icer or de-icer: 1) Ice can form on a wing only when the temperature is below or hovering around zero. 2) The thermic effects produced on contact of the air with the moving wing rather oppose ice accretion. 3) The thermic procedure in the fight against ice accretion on the wing consists in electrical heating of the leading edge.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of an N.A.C.A. 23012 Airfoil with a Slotted Flap and Three Types of Auxiliary Flap
"An investigation was made in the N.A.C.A. 7- by 10- foot wind tunnel to determine the aerodynamic section characteristics of an N. A. C. A. 23012 airfoil with a single main slotted flap equipped successively with auxiliary flaps of the plain, split, and slotted types. A test installation mas used in which an airfoil of 7-foot span was mounted vertically between the upper and the lower sides of the closed test section so that two-dimensional flow was approximated. On the basis of maximum lift coefficient, low drag at moderate and high lift coefficients, and high drag at high lift coefficients, the optimum combination of the arrangements was found to be the double slotted flap" (p. 1).

The Effect of Continuous Weathering on Light Metal Alloys Used in Aircraft
"An investigation of the corrosion of light metal alloys used in aircraft was begun at the National Bureau of Standards in 1925 and has for its purpose causes of corrosion in aluminum-rich and magnesium-rich alloys together with the development of methods for its prevention. The results, obtained in an extensive series of laboratory and weather-exposure tests, reveal the relative durability of a number of commercially available materials and the extent to which the application of various surface coatings of oxide alone and with paint coatings afforded additional protection. The paper may be considered as a supplement to NACA report 490" (p. 395).

Copy of a letter from Dr. Meyer Bodansky to Dr. H. B. Connally asking for a letter of encouragement written to a friend, Dr. Gottschalk, a recent immigrant to the United States. Dr. Bodansky states several hardships Dr. Gottschalk is undergoing along with several other doctors who are refugees from Germany with the onset of World War II and asks Dr. Connally's help as a member of the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. He asks Dr. Connally to look for the good in the doctors and overlook their German heritage.
