Tests of three tapered airfoils based on the N.A.C.A. 2200, the N.A.C.A.-M6, and the Clark Y sections

Three tapered airfoils based on the N.A.C.A. 2200, the N.A.C.A.-M6, and the Clark Y sections were tested in the variable-density wind tunnel at a Reynolds Number of approximately 3,100,000. The models, which were of aspect ratio 6, had constant core center sections and rounded tips, and tapered in thickness from 18 percent at the roots to 9 percent at the tips. The aerodynamic characteristics are given by the usual dimensionless coefficients plotted for both positive and negative angles of attack and by effective profile-drag coefficients plotted against lift coefficients.

Aerodynamic Effects of a Split Flap on the Spinning Characteristics of a Monoplane Model

From Summary: "The investigation described in this report was made to determine the change in aerodynamic forces and moments produced by split flaps in a steady spin. The test were made with the spinning balance in the NACA 5-foot vertical wind tunnel. A low-wing monoplane model was tested with and without the split flaps in 12 spinning attitudes chosen to cover the probable spinning range. The results obtained indicate that the use of split flaps on an airplane is unlikely, in any case, to have much beneficial effect on a spin, and it might make the spin dangerous."

Spinning characteristics of wings 1: rectangular Clark Y monoplane wing

"A series of wind tunnel tests of a rectangular Clark Y wing was made with the NACA spinning balance as part of a general program of research on airplane spinning. All six components of the aerodynamic force and moment were measured throughout the range of angles of attack, angles of sideslip, and values omega b/2v likely to be attained by a spinning airplane; the results were reduced to coefficient form. It is concluded that a conventional monoplane with a rectangular Clark y wing can be made to attain spinning equilibrium throughout a wide range of angles of attack but that provision of a yawing moment coefficient of -0.02 (against the spin) by the tail, fuselage, and interferences will insure against attainment of equilibrium in a steady spin" (p. 231).

From Summary: "The investigation described in this report was made to determine the effectiveness of floating wing-tip ailerons as an airplane control in the spin. In these tests the ailerons, not being balanced, were set parallel to the axis of rotation, which is probably very nearly the attitude that balanced floating ailerons would assume in a spin. Rolling - and yawing moment coefficients are given as measured for the model with and without the ailerons, and computed values are given for the ailerons alone."

From page 127: For the last few years Mr. Henry E. Lee, of Rapid City, S.Dak., has been sending me selected material from the lower part of the Lance formation of Harding County, S.Dak., the exact locality being what is locally known as the Jump Off, an erosion basin of the headwaters of the South Fork of the Grand River, 10 miles north of the East Short Pine Hills. 1 The matrix is a soft gray friable sandstone, and consequently only the coarser, more resistant plants are preserved. In view of the coarseness of the matrix the preservation is excellent, although usually the finer details of venation are obscure. In the sands overlying the plant beds are thin seams of impure lignite.

Miocene Plants from Idaho

Abstract: The author describes 75 species of plants from the Miocene of about 30 localities in Idaho. These plants represent 40 genera in 28 families and 17 orders, and the most common types are species of Acer, Quercus, Populus, Betula, and Laurus. There are 2 ferns, 3 monocotyledons, and 70 dicotyledons, 18 of which are no longer present in the northwestern United States. There are some xerophytic types, but the majority are mesophytic, possibly indicating a mixture from different altitudes. The beds are correlated with the Latah formation and considered to be of upper Miocene age.

This made it necessary to make a cut-out in the center of the continuous elevator so as to enlarge the rudder downward. Landing-shock recorder

A description of a special type of seismograph, called a "landing-shock recorder," to be used for measuring the acceleration during impacts such as are experienced in airplane landings, is given . The theory, together with the assumptions made, is discussed in its relation to calculating the acceleration experienced in impact. Calculations are given from records obtained for two impacts of known acceleration. In one case the impact was very severe and in the other it was only moderately severe.

This report presents the results of wind tunnel tests on a Robinson-type anemometer. The investigation covered force measurements on individual cups, as well as static and dynamic torque measurements and calibrations on complete cup wheels. In the tests on individual cups 5 cup forms were used and in the measurements on complete cup wheels 4 cup wheels with 3 arm lengths for each cup wheel were tested. All the results are presented in graphical form.

Measurement of altitude in blind flying

In this note, instruments for measuring altitude and rate of change of altitude in blind flying and landing of aircraft and their performance are discussed. Of those indicating the altitude above ground level, the sonic altimeter is the most promising. Its present bulk, intermittent operation, and more or less unsatisfactory means of indication are serious drawbacks to its use. The sensitive type aneroid altimeter is also discussed and errors in flying at a pressure level and in landing are discussed in detail.

The Recognizable Species of the Green River Flora

Abstract: The identification of new collections of fossil plants from the Green River formation of middle Eocene age made it necessary to reexamine the megascopic types of the Green River flora. This study resulted in the reassignment of some species and the rejection of such species as were based on fragmentary, indefinable specimens. The recent collections yielded 22 new species. Exclusive of the microscopic forms of thallophytes and pollens, the flora now numbers 135 megascopic species that are considered to be recognizable and distinctive. The new elements found in the flora do not alter the previously expressed opinion that the megascopic Green River flora lived in a warm-temperate well-watered environment.

A Preliminary Motion-Picture Study of Combustion in a Compression-Ignition Engine

"Motion pictures were taken at 1,850 frames per second of the spray penetration and combustion occurring in the N.A.C.A. combustion apparatus arranged to operate as a compression-ignition engine. Indicator cards were taken simultaneously with the motion pictures by means of the N.A.C.A. optical indicator. The motion pictures showed that when ignition occurred during injection it started in the spray envelope. If ignition occurred after injection cut-off, however, and after considerable mixing had taken place, it was impossible to predict where the ignition would start" (p. 1).

Notes on the Geology of the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands

Abstract: During the spring of 1932 an opportunity was offered by the United States Navy for a geologist to accompany an expedition organized to make a reconnaissance of the western part of Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. This expedition visited several localities the geology of which was little known. It was found, as had already been expected, that the islands west of Unimak Pass are composed mainly of basic volcanic lavas and fragmental materials, into which have later been injected dikes, sills, and considerable masses of intrusive rocks, some of which are of acidic types and of granitic texture. These westward islands are bordered both to the north and south by depressions 2,000 fathoms or more in depth, and the islands have apparently been built up from that depth by the ejection and extrusion of volcanic materials since early Tertiary time. No rocks of proved pre-Tertiary age were seen, and the only sedimentary materials present may well have been derived from the erosion of the volcanic islands after they were built up above sea level. A complete tank test of the hull of the Sikorsky S-40 flying boat - American Clipper Class

The results of a complete test in the N.A.C.A. tank on a model of the hull of Sikorsky S-40 flying boat ('American Clipper') are reported. The test data are given in tables and curves. From these data non-dimensional coefficients are derived for use in take-off calculations and the take-off time and run for the S-40 are computed. The computed take-off time was obtained by the Sikorsky Aviation Corporation in performance tests of the actual craft.
