From Introduction: "The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the general character and commercial quality of some of the coals mined in the United States that reach tidewater shipping ports, and to show in a general way the important characteristics of those coals that by reason of transportation facilities and the situation of the coal fields are most available for export."

Whatever may be the prevalence of nystagmus in the United States, its seriousness as a disease and the need of national and State agencies cooperating in endeavors to obtain exact information regarding it are deemed sufficient reasons for the publication of Mr. Hoffman's interesting and suggestive paper.

Report discussing an analysis of explosives which passed tests that are permissible to use in coal mines.

From Introduction: "The present paper is a report of a detailed study of the bituminous dusts of Illinois mines, and is a part of the investigations conducted by the bureau in cooperation with the Illinois State Geological Survey and the department of mining engineering of the University of Illinois."

From Introduction: "This report presents the results of one phase of this study and shows how atmospheric air, after entering a coal mine, loses oxygen and gains carbon dioxide with resulting formation of so-called black damp."

From Introduction: "The object of this report is to give briefly information of present value relating to the manufacture and uses of the various commercial alloy steels, with the hope of stimulating the demand for such steels and extending their practical use."

From Introduction: "Technical Paper 66 deals with the mud-laden fluid process in general and No. 68 with its application in Oklahoma. Rather than reprint these publications, it has been considered advisable to replace them with the present report, which includes the results of more recent investigations. The methods of using mud-laden fluid are an outgrowth of the rotary drilling system, which was developed in Texas and later employed in Louisiana and California."

From Preface: "The aim of this bulletin is to present to the marble workers of the United States a concise statement of the most efficient and economical methods now in use for producing and preparing marble. From Introduction: "During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and lignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. However, although many producer-gas plants in daily operation are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels."

From Scope and Purpose of Investigation: "The direct purpose of the bulletin is, on the one hand, to prove to possible consumers of molybdenum that the element is not as rare as commonly supposed, and that this country possesses many deposits of low-grade ore from which large supplies may be derived, and on the other hand, to prove to present and prospective producers of molybdenum that there is a latent market for their product in the alloy-steel trade, which needs only the assurance of steady supplies for a considerable development."

From Introduction: "In this report considerable space has been devoted to general and theoretical principles on the ground that under modern conditions the best results in any field of activity can be attained only with the aid of an adequate knowledge of the best theories underlying the practice. The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so it will make no difference whether pig iron of gold bullion is offered for test. "
