The Alfalfa Weevil and Methods of Controlling It (open access)

The Alfalfa Weevil and Methods of Controlling It

"The alfalfa weevil destroys a great deal of alfalfa in northern Utah and southern Idaho. It also inhabits southwestern Wyoming and is spreading slowly to new territory in all directions. It may in time infest most of the United States. The adult, a small brown snout-beetle, and the larva, a green, worm-like creature, usually escape notice during the first two or three years that they are present in a locality, but as soon as they become numerous enough to do harm they are readily found, and their effect upon the appearance of the fields is conspicuous. Vigorous treatment is then necessary to prevent partial or total destruction of the first and second crops. The purpose of this bulletin is to show how serious the attack is to the farmer, how much territory it embraces and how it spreads, and to describe the insect, its work, and the methods which are effective in dealing with it." -- title page

The Bagworm, an Injurious Shade-Tree Insect (open access)

The Bagworm, an Injurious Shade-Tree Insect

"Shade trees, shrubs, and hedges, and in particular evergreens, are much subject to injury by a caterpillar which has a curious habit of crawling about on the infested trees in a baglike case, whence its common name of bagworm or basket worm. In the shelter of these cases the insects undergo all their transformation, after which the bags remain attached to the plants for some time and are conspicuous objects on leafless trees and shrubs in late autumn and in winter." -- title page. The bagworm's diet, life cycle, habits, and natural enemies are discussed, but most of the report's discussion concerns control measures.

Canaries: Their Care and Management (open access)

Canaries: Their Care and Management

"This bulletin, intended to meet the requests continually received for information on the care of canaries in sickness and health, is compiled from numerous sources, and includes also some personal experiences and observations of the author. In it the history of the domestication of the canary is touched upon, and there is a brief account, with illustrations, of the common and fancy varieties, which are distinguished by shape and color. The chief usefulness of the bulletin is in its discussion of practical problems. There is a section on the style of cages and their sanitation. Detailed information is given concerning bathing, molt, and food, including the feeding of special foods for deepening the color of the birds. One chapter shows the possibility of breeding canaries in captivity and is designed as an aid to this. The concluding pages deal with the health of the birds. Methods of ridding them of vermin are set forth, as well as instructions for caring for fractured legs and wings, and for the treatment of respiratory and intestinal diseases and of such ailments as loss of feathers. The bulletin is intended for all who are interested in canaries." -- p. 2

The Care and Improvement of the Wood Lot (open access)

The Care and Improvement of the Wood Lot

"Wood grown in the farm wood lot is a farm crop. That it is, however, is too often overlooked, because, unlike other farm crops, timber requires a small amount of labor and a long period of years to bring it to a marketable condition. If properly cared for, a wood lot will furnish material for market at intervals, and will afford a supply of timber, fuel, etc., for home use at all times. If neglected or abused, it is bound to deteriorate, and may eventually disappear altogether. The aim of this bulletin is to point out methods of caring for the wood lot and improving it so as to make it produce the largest and best crop of which is is capable." -- title page

Castration of Young Pigs (open access)

Castration of Young Pigs

"This publication deals with castration, or the removal of the essential organs of male pigs. The objects of castration are to prevent reproduction, to increase fattening propensity, to better the quality of the meat of the animal, and to help insure docility. Every farmer should be competent to castrate pigs, as the losses from the operation are as a rule not very heavy and could be reduced by exercising care and attention." -- title page

Corn Growing Under Droughty Conditions (open access)

Corn Growing Under Droughty Conditions

"For 50 years new settlers from the East[of the United States] have attempted to grow corn in the semiarid West. The seed used and the methods employed were often those with which the settlers had had experience in the East. They were not adapted to western conditions, and many failures resulted... It is the purpose of this bulletin to show in a general way some of the causes of these failures and how failures may be made less frequent or less intense. Particular varieties of corn and particular methods of cultivation are not applicable to the whole of any large area. Nevertheless, there are certain fundamental requirements of moisture, heat, and fertility which everywhere govern corn yields. A change in the supply of one may make a change in another advisable. Thus, the moisture requirement varies with the amount of heat available. In short, the secret of successful corn culture is to maintain a proper balance of moisture, heat, and fertility." -- title page
