A photographic reproduction of a campaign poster for the first city elections for the city of Texas City, held on Saturday, September 16, 1911. The poster reads as follows " Vote for W. P. Tarpey for mayor H. M. Coats and F. B. Davison for commissioners for a greater Texas City and a square deal for all Election Saturday, September 16th, 1911". [The "Doodle Bug" Interior]

This photograph illustrates the interior of a McKeen motor car, known locally as a "Doodle Bug", with its dust-proof round windows. This one, owned by the Weatherford, Mineral Wells and Northwestern Railway, was an 81-passenger, 70-foot-long, 200-horsepower, gasoline-powered, motor coach. It traveled from Graford through Oran and Salesville to Mineral Wells, thence on to Dallas. It made a round trip daily from 1912 to 1929. A turntable at Graford turned the coaches around. There were two "Doodle Bugs" on the WMW&NW. The third similar coach, owned by the Gulf, Texas and Western Railroad (GT&W), traveled from Seymour through Guthrie, and Jacksboro to Salesville beginning in 1913. It proceeded thence over the WMW&NW track to Mineral Wells, and on to Dallas. The McKeen Motor Car Company was run by one William B. McKeen, who was both red-haired and described as "Flamboyant." He painted his demonstration cars bright red, and reproduced an image of them on his letterhead. He has been described as a "Hard-sell artist in an industry more accustomed to polite suggestion." He "Bombarded railroad presidents, big and small, with volley after volley of rapid-fire sales letters and telegrams, often following them up with personal visits." He was also characterized …

[First Union Pacific passenger train leaves Ft. Collins]

This photograph depicts one of the most eventful days in the history of Fort Collins, Colorado. The date is July 15, 1911 and the time is 7:20 am as the Union Pacific's first passenger train departs from the city. Observe the beautiful old-time steam locomotive, an American, type 4-4-0 locomotive, heading a consist of handcrafted wooden cars, having underbody truss rods and open platforms.

["Daylight Special" at Chicago Central Station]

One of the Illinois Central's de luxe passenger trains; the "Daylight Special" train No. 19 southbound, stands in the Central Station in Chicago - as passengers entrain - prior to the departure hour : 10:02 AM. This train (and its companion, No. 20 northbound) operated between Chicago, Springfield, and St. Louis. The rail distance was 294.17 miles; and the schedule was 7 hours and 44 minutes: equivalent to a running time of about 40 miles per hour. This photograph was taken in the summer of 1911. This was a modern train in that era - cited in the Official Guide of the Railways (June 1916) as: All steel and electric-lighted. The consist included: chair cars and coaches, cafe-club car and Observation Parlor car.
