[A Matter of Time]

Photographs of the 2017-2018 artist's book competition winner "A Matter of Time" created by Samuel C. Cowan. Media: Leather, etched copper, screen print and watercolor on paper. A Matter of Time is the study of the effects of light and time on space. It is a celebration of repetition through subtle, predictable change. The first image is a triangular book, the middle of it a light brown triangle with subtle lines that make it resemble an eye. Image 2, the triangular book is opened up to show several panels in an accordion-like manner, containing illustrations of a house with bare trees by it and bright blue sky. The house is the same, but the shadow on it varies. Image 3, a closeup of three of the book panels, the houses on the illustration go from big shadow to small shadow from left to right.

[The Making of Micky Mcghee]

Image 2, inscription written on the inside of the cover in pencil. Robert Walter Campbell, born 1876, served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in the Boer War (1899 to 1902), and then again with the 5th battalion in Gallipoli (1914) in the Great War. This second tour gave him the material for his poems in support of the war effort. Campbell wrote 25 lively poems and songs in Standard English for The Making of Micky McGhee. Some 20th century Scottish slang is sprinkled throughout.

[A Space Between Us]

Photographs of the 2003-2004 artist's book competition winner "A Space Between Us" created by Lisa Tristan Mellot (aka Elizabeth Mellott-Carreon). Each of the twelve volumes of A Space Between Us consists of fired clay covers that enclose handmade paper pages. The pages open as a triptych to reveal contrasting statements about how the artist related with her mother at various ages and how her mother related with the artist's grandmother at the same ages. Beneath the pages are recessed compartments containing found objects. The first image shows one of the books propped open, behind it one of the books is propped up to the front and back cover, a pile of of the same books next to it. Image 2, photo inside the book. [Microscopic Book]

Photographs of the 2019-2020 artist's book competition honorable mention "Microscopic Book" created by Todd Rychener. Media: alcohol ink, acetate, fabric, paper. Designed to not have an obvious front or back, Microscopic Book can be read left to right starting at either cover. The intention is to bring to mind: biology class microscope slides, 35mm film slides, kaleidoscopes, fossilized amber, gemstones, or underwater sunlight. The first image is of the grey book seen from the top, the cover of the page has a magnifying glass in the middle. The pages are different colors. Image 2, the clear pages of the book are opened up, the frames different colors. Image 3, the front and back of the grey book are seen with the magnifying glasses on the front and back. The front and back are tied together by light blue string. Through the clear part of the book colorful swirls can be seen.

[Plain Song 1914-1916]

Image 1, cover of the book made of grey paper, framed by a thick line with the title at the top followed by the dates 1914-1916. Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960) was born in British India and is best known for his celebration of the landscape of Dartmoor in southern England. His collection of poems, Plain Song, moves from horror to acceptance, but always with a sense of detachment of the poet at home. The opening poem takes its title from the date Britain declared war on Germany, “August 4, 1914.” Thwarting the reader’s expectations, the poem begins with a peaceful woodland scene at dusk, where the speaker watches the moon rise over a clearing filled with emerald-like glow-worms and the purr of a swooping churn-owl, who “throbbed and throbbed, then took his flight...in rapture and delight” (p. 2). The poem ends by shattering this scene “by Nature sanctified” when the speaker suddenly recalls the …
