An Error Analysis for the Use of Presently Available Lunar Radio Flux Data in Broadbeam Antenna-System Measurements (open access)

An Error Analysis for the Use of Presently Available Lunar Radio Flux Data in Broadbeam Antenna-System Measurements

From introduction: Simple, precise expressions for lunar diameter, average brightness temperature, flux density, and shape factor are presented. An analysis of the relationship between these parameters and corresponding errors are included. For broadbeam (HPBW>d) antennas, results show that flux density and shape factor can be determined with errors less than 13 percent and 0.4 percent respectively at frequencies below 10 GHz. Extension of the analysis to higher frequencies is indicated.

Evaluating the Impact of Securities Regulation on Venture Capital Markets (open access)

Evaluating the Impact of Securities Regulation on Venture Capital Markets

Report providing a detailed and analytical assessment of the economic techniques used by researchers to evaluate the efficiency of capital markets. The application of these techniques to that portion of the capital market which supplies venture funds to small, technology-based firms is emphasized. The primary elements of such analysis are the "efficient market ' hypothesis" and the "capital asset pricing model." The empirical analogue of the latter is commonly referred to as the market model."

Evaluating Thermal Fire Detection Systems: English Units (open access)

Evaluating Thermal Fire Detection Systems: English Units

Abstract: This report presents a methodology for evaluating heat detection systems installed in buildings. Previous work for use primarily in designing new thermal fire detection systems was used as a starting point. The previous work was enhanced and supplemented to make it more useful for evaluating existing systems. The resulting equations were programmed into a user interactive computer program. This program is available in both BASIC and FORTRAN and will run on mainframes as well as personal computers. In addition, a modified version of the FORTRAN program was used to develop an extensive set of tables listing detector activation times for given building geometries, detector characteristics, and fire growth rates. These tables are useful for quick evaluation of alternative heat detector installations. Finally practical examples are included to illustrate the use of the tables and computer programs.

Excitation of a TEM Cell by a Vertical Electric Hertzian Dipole (open access)

Excitation of a TEM Cell by a Vertical Electric Hertzian Dipole

From abstract: The excitation of a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell by a vertical electric Hertzian dipole is analyzed where the gap between the septum and side wall is assumed to be small. Approximate expressions for the field distribution and characteristic impedance are derived. These expressions are numerically evaluated for some typical geometries, and good agreement with previously published results is shown. The formation also allows a vertical offset for the septum position, thus offering more flexibility of increasing the size of the test area to accommodate larger pieces of test equipment.

An Experimental Study of Phase Variations in Line-of-Sight Microwave Transmissions

From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of time variations in: (1) the phase (relative to a stable phase reference) if a 9414 Mc/s signal transmitted over this path, referred to hereafter as single-path phase data; (2) the phase observed at one receiving antenna relative to that observed at an adjacent antenna, referred to as phase difference data; (3) atmospheric refractivity as recorded by a microwave refractometer located at the Haleakala terminal; (4) the wind velocity at both ends of the path, and (5) surface atmospheric refractivity measured at 5 stations located on or near the path."

Expert Systems and Emergency Management: An Annotated Bibliography (open access)

Expert Systems and Emergency Management: An Annotated Bibliography

Abstract: This report is the result of an in-depth review of the recent technical literature on expert systems,. The material contained in this report provided a basis for assessing the potential for using expert systems in emergency management operations. In choosing the material for inclusion in this report, special emphasis was placed on those aspects of expert systems which addressed the types of problems encountered in emergency management operations. The report is designed for use as a resource document and as a tutorial on expert systems and emergency management. Each chapter consists of a brief topic essay followed by a set of references which expand on the main themes of the essay.

Facilities of the National Bureau of Standards (open access)

Facilities of the National Bureau of Standards

From forward: Every laboratory in this country is a valuable national resource. Along with the people who work in these facilities, U.S. laboratories constitute the basic foundation of this country's scientific and industrial strength. As the nation's foremost science and engineering measurement laboratory, the National Bureau of Standards has some of the premier research and testing facilities in the United States, and several of our laboratories are unequaled anywhere in the world. Bureau scientists and engineers use these special facilities to pursue the measurement-related work that U.S. science and industry need to grow and prosper. This brochure highlights only a small number of the special facilities available at NBS and provides information about their availability for collaborative or independent research and testing.

Finline Diode Six-Port: Fundamentals and Design Information (open access)

Finline Diode Six-Port: Fundamentals and Design Information

Abstract: The preliminary design and testing of a planar circuit six-port with diode detectors is described. The planar circuit medium was chosen to be finline, and all preliminary work was done in WR-42 waveguide (18-26.5 GHz). The finline substrate was alumina, and initially commercial beam-lead diodes were bonded to the finline metalization. The goal is to design an integrated circuit which could be fabricated on one chip (with diode detectors) and used as part of a six port network analyzer in the waveguide bands above 18 GHz. Initial designs proved to b unsatisfactory because of high losses and reflections. Most of the problems have b en solved, and a usable integrated finline circuit is a good possibility for a millimeter wave six-port.

The First Spectrum of Hafnium (HF I) (open access)

The First Spectrum of Hafnium (HF I)

Report continuing W. K. Meggers' previous analysis in LS-coupling. This coupling is not rigorous in Hf I, and many intervals are irregular. Consequently, the levels are given also in numerical order with the even and odd levels presented in separate tables. The long line lists are given in two Appendices: Appendix A contains the observed Zeeman data for the individual lines, 531 in all; Appendix B consists of the complete line list of observed and classified lines. By far the greater part of the analysis is that of Meggers.
