Video Processing of Remote Sensor Data Applied to Uranium Exploration in Wyoming: Final Report (open access)

Video Processing of Remote Sensor Data Applied to Uranium Exploration in Wyoming: Final Report

From introduction: This study is a comprehensive investigation of altered sandstone associated with uranium deposits near Pumpkin Buttes in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, and the detection of such alteration using remote sensing technology. The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to develop video image processing techniques that will preferentially enhance areas of alteration associated with uranium deposits and enable mapping of these areas, and 2) to investigate the spectral, geochemical, and mineralogical characteristics of altered areas which make them detectable on remote sensor data. Once these video processing techniques have been defined, they may be applied as exploration tools to new areas with similar surface and geological environments. In this way, remote sensing can serve as a valuable tool for uranium exploration.

[Wyoming Uranium Evaluation] Volume 1: A Summary of the Geology and Uranium Potential of Precambrian Conglomerates in Southeastern Wyoming

From deposit: Since 1975 a cooperative effort between the United States Department of Energy, United States Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Wyoming, the Geology Department, University of Wyoming, and various industry groups has resulted in the discovery of a series of uraniumthorium-and gold-bearing conglomerates in Late Archean and Early Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of southern Wyoming. The mineral deposits were found by applying the time and strata bound model for the origin of uranium-bearing quartz-pebble conglomerates to favorable rock types within a geologic terrane known from prior regional mapping.

[Wyoming Uranium Evaluation] Volume 2: Drill-Hole Data, Drill-Site Geology, and Geochemical Data from the Study of Precambrian Uraniferous Conglomerates of the Medicine Bow Mountains and the Sierra Madre of Southeastern Wyoming

From introduction: This volume is presented as a companion to Volume I: The Geology and Uranium Potential of Precambrian Conglomerates in the Medicine Bow Mountains and Sierra Madre of southeastern Wyoming; and to Volume 3: Uranium Assessment for Precambrian Pebble Conglomerates in Southeastern Wyoming. In Volume 1, we summarized the geologic setting and geologic and geochemical characteristics of uranium-bearing conglomerates in Precambrian metasedimentary rocks of southeastern Wyoming. Volume 3 is a geostatistical resource estimate of U and Th in quartz-pebble conglomerates. This volume contains supporting geochemical data, lithologic logs from 48 drill holes in Precambrian rocks of the Medicine Bow Mountains and Sierra Madre, and drill site geologic maps and cross-sections from most of the holes.

[Wyoming Uranium Evaluation] Volume 3: Uranium Assessment for the Precambrian Pebble Conglomerates in Southeastern Wyoming (open access)

[Wyoming Uranium Evaluation] Volume 3: Uranium Assessment for the Precambrian Pebble Conglomerates in Southeastern Wyoming

From introduction: The Geology Department of the University of Wyoming was asked to make a geostatistical assessment of the uranium endowment of these deposits as a part of the World Class core drilling operations of the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation. This study was to include (a) the development of optimum geostatistical methodology for assessing uranium endowment in areas of close drill control (1 mile or less centers) as well as in areas of distant drill control (5 mile centers or more), (.b) the implementation of this methodology in assessing the uranium resources of the pebble conglomerates in southeastern Wyoming, and (c) the determination of the overall geostatistical uncertainty of the resource estimates. In addition, methods were to be studied for projecting the assessments into new areas, including prediction of estimate uncertainty.

Preliminary Report of the Uranium Favorability of Shear Zones in the Crystalline Rocks of the Southern Appalachians (open access)

Preliminary Report of the Uranium Favorability of Shear Zones in the Crystalline Rocks of the Southern Appalachians

From summary: Three sheared areas in the crystalline Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces, from which uranium occurrences or anomalous radioactivity have been reported, were studied to determine their favorability for uranium mineralization. The study, which involved a literature review, geologic reconnaissance, ground radiometric surveys, and sampling of rock outcrops for petrographic and chemical analyses, indicates that more-detailed investigations of these and similar areas are warranted.

Favorability for Uranium in Tertiary Sedimentary Rocks, Southwestern Montana (open access)

Favorability for Uranium in Tertiary Sedimentary Rocks, Southwestern Montana

The objective of the study was to evaluate the favorability for potential uranium resources in Tertiary and related strata. Past studies indicate that the Tertiary basins in southwestern Montana are worthy of further investigation because (1) several basins contain a thick sequence of continental sedimentary rocks, (2) several basins are near possible granitic source rocks that have known uranium occurrences, and (3) some of the Montana basins are geologically similar to basins in Wyoming that are host to important sandstone-type deposits. This study focuses on sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age, but includes some rocks of Late Cretaceous and Pleistocene ages. In some areas only a portion of the total Tertiary sedimentary section could be studied because of poor surface exposures and limited subsurface information.

Preliminary Evaluation of the Uranium Favorability in the Area Northeast of Gunnison, Colorado (open access)

Preliminary Evaluation of the Uranium Favorability in the Area Northeast of Gunnison, Colorado

Rock and stream-sediment samples were collected to define areas favorable for uranium deposits northeast of Gunnison, Colorado. Areas considered most favorable for further exploration are: (1) the Bronco Mountain area, approximately 10 mi south of Taylor Park Reservoir, (2) the area near the Big Red mine, and (3) the area 5 mi north-northeast of Taylor Park Reservoir. On the basis of known deposits in the Marshall Pass and Cochetopa districts, fault contacts between Precambrian granites and Paleozoic or Mesozoic sedimentary rocks are favorable structural sites.
