Abstract: The results of analyses of the airborne gamma radiation and total magnetic field survey flown for the region identified as the Tonopah National Topographic Map NJll-5 is presented in Volume I and II of this report. The airborne data gathered is reduced by ground computer facilities to yield profile plots of the basic uranium, thorium and potassium equivalent gamma radiation intensities, ratios of these intensities, aircraft altitude above the earth's surface, total gamma ray and earth's magnetic field intensity, correlated as a function of geologic units. The distribution of data within each geologic unit, for all surveyed map lines and tie lines, has been calculated and is included. Two sets of profiled data for each line are included with one set displaying the above-cited data. The second set includes only flight line magnetic field, temperature, pressure, altitude data plus magnetic field data as measured at a base station. A general description of the area, including descriptions of the various geologic units and the corresponding airborne data, is included also.

The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

From introduction: The Monument No. 2 mine is in the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Arizona, about 20 miles southwest from the San Juan River at Mexican Hat, Utah, and 26 miles southwest from Mexican Water, Arizona. The property has been operated, since its discovery, by Vanadium Corporation of America, which holds a 10-year mining lease, granted through the Interior Department, to 43 acres of ground. History of the discovery of the deposit is vague, but reportedly it was first seen around 1942 by a Navajo who mentioned the occurrence to Harry Goulding, Indian trader, who in turn advised D. W. Viles of Vanadium Corporation of America. Minor portions of the deposit are held by Cato Sells and Harvey Black, Navajos, under mining permits issued by the Navajo Tribal Council. The Sells acreage is being operated by Climax Uranium Corporation.

The intent of this work was to explore more fully the pressing of sinterable UO2 powders into cylindrical compacts in the hope that a more precise prediction of green density in terms of powder properties, pressure, and geometry could be evolved.

Field work in White Canyon was initiated to determine reserves of uranium ores and to determine the nature of the physical, geological, and economic conditions affecting mining and milling of such ores.

Abstract: "The counting efficiency of Pa²³³ has been determined by comparison of the counting rate of Pa²³³, under stated conditions, with the disintegration rate of U²³³ produced by Pa²³³ decay."

The use of diffusion theory to attempt to reproduce the chemical data of Hicks and Stevenson for the spatial distribution of neutrons in a solid block of uranium that is bombarded by 190 Mev neutrons is described.

To calibrate a pulse height discriminator, the amplitude of the calibrating pulse must be known. If the amplitude is known, the discriminator dial may be calibrated in terms of the input signal required to just trip it. This is the purpose for which the Discriminator Calibrator was designed. It produces pulses of variable but known amplitude with a rep. rate variable from 3 pps to 4000 pps. The main use of this unit at the UCRL is in conjunction with scalers at fixed counting locations.

Report regarding the mathematical analysis of the exponential pile experiment using highly absorbent slugs and assuming the emitting of fast neutrons. Related theory and equations are discussed.

Early in the design of the Mark I accelerator it was decided to install magnetic lenses in the drift tubes. A number of model magnets were constructed and tested to determine the best design for these lenses. This report includes only the results of the tests on the final models of the magnets that are designed for Mark I.

Technical report outlining how uranium hexaflouride was prepared be the direct combination of irradiated uranium metal with elemental fluorine and subsequently decontaminated by adsorption, filtration, and sublimation on a laboratory scale. Report proposes a survey of other methods of preparing UF6 from uranium metal, a study of adsorption techniques for removing plutonium from UF6, and an investigation of fractional distillation for removing the volatile fission product fluorides from UF6. Technical report detailing corrosion tests of Type 347 stainless steel for two weeks in boiling uranyl nitrate, sulfuric acid media, with and without additions of Al+3 and F-1 in a 2:1 mole ratio. The results of these tests show that although the presence of aluminum greatly reduces the deleterious effect of fluoride, the corrosion rates are still three to four times greater than when no fluoride is present. From abstract: "The study evaluates the utilization of superheat and moisture separation techniques in the SM-2 design to improve the steam plant reliability and thermal efficiency. Ease of packaging, steam plant transient response, and capital costs are also considered. The reference design used for comparison is the steam cycle employing saturated steam at 600 psia described in APAE No. 40, Volume II."

From introduction: "Due to the hydrogen overvoltage at the surface of a mercury cathode, uranium solutions is hydrochloric acid may be reduced not only to the tetravalent state, but until considerable trivalent uranium is formed. Other metallic ions act as oxidation-reduction catalysts as well as being reduced themselves. The following paper is a study of the various reactions taking place in solution and at the surface of the cathode."

The results of this paper show that a variation is sensing voltage produces an error in timing which increases logarithmically with time interval. Also, variation in supply voltage produces the same type of errors, but the errors are decreased by the ratio of the sensing to supply voltage. An interesting conclusion from this analysis is that if the ratio of supply to sensing voltages is maintained constant, no change in timing will result.

Report evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of four zirconium fuel processes: the present STR process, the modified Zirflex process, the barium fluozirconate process, and the sodium formate process.

The following report supplements a previous report by E.R. Saunders and M. C. Carosella and a report by A. J. Gailey and E. O. Brimm based around the same subject. This report describes a number of tests in which leaching temperatures of 115 and 125 C were tried for the extractions of uranium from western ores.

Air filter and rainwater collections of atmospheric fall-out were made at Atlanta, Georgia; Urbana, Illinois; Topeka, Kansas; Fort Worth, Texas; and Nashville, Tennessee. Collections reflect the effects of the radioactive cloud from the Nevada tests.

Technical report describing the attempt to separate the long lived fission product oxides by volatilization methods. A fractionization crucible was used. The fractionations give a fair idea of the relative volatilities of the longer lived fission products and also of the degrees of separation of the plutonium oxide or oxides from the fission products.

From abstract: "The objective of this program is to produce a set of pulse-height spectra representing the response of a standard gamma-ray scintillation spectrometer to radiations emitted in the decay of neutron-deficient nuclides."

Preliminary recommendations are presented for drilling the area on a 1,000-foot grid to provide final elevation of the East Carrizo mining district.
