REMOTELY CONTROLLED SHEARING OF PIPE AND STRUCTURAL MEMBERS (open access)

REMOTELY CONTROLLED SHEARING OF PIPE AND STRUCTURAL MEMBERS

A shearing tool was developed for remotely controlled severing of pipes or structural members. The shear is rotated about its axis in a wrist motion by the pumped hydraulic fluid that also powers the shear blade. It can be used in a stationary mounting or suspended from a crane. A C-shaped support for the shear was designed to pass through a small top opening of a shielded cell. The controls for manipulating the shear pass through or along the Cframe. The shear jaw opens to 5 in. in height and 7 in. in width, and the total weight of the tool is only 575 lb. It was used to cut metal sections 4 3/4 in. thick and 4-in. sched.-40 stainless steel pipe. Some fundamental aspects of vaporization (open access)

Some fundamental aspects of vaporization

A discussion of the fundamental aspects of vaporization is presented along with a discussion of evaporation within the theories of solids and gases. Suggestions are offered as to where assumptions might be introduced to describe the phenomenon more completely, and tenative definitions concerning factors which can give rise to vaporization coefficients are given. An effort is made to unify these concepts within the phenomenological framework of irreversible thermodynamics. (J.R.D.)

A Solution of the Distributional Error Problem in Cytophotometry (open access)

A Solution of the Distributional Error Problem in Cytophotometry

Use of that portion of the characteristic curve of photographic film in which transmission is linear with log exposure eliminates the distributional error and thus makes possible the assessment of total mass of an inhomogeneously distributed cell consistent without scanning or measuring the cell's projected area. Measurement consists of obtaining the difference in output of a photocell receiving the total light transmitted by a photomicrograph of the cell, and a photomicrograph of the microscope field illumination against which the cell was photographed. A method of making such measurements is given, and its basis is described.
