An Automatic Polarograph for the Determination of Uranium in Process Waste Streams (open access)

An Automatic Polarograph for the Determination of Uranium in Process Waste Streams

The automatic polarograph is ideally suited for the analysis of waste streams for uranium in the Metal Recovery Process, and with modification, it is applicable to other processes, pilot plants, and even to laboratory set ups. The instrument is simple, dependable, and relatively trouble free in operation. It provides an immediate record of the uranium in the waste and, through better control of the process, lower processing costs.

Neutralization of HNO₃ in Redox ICU an IAW Streams (open access)

Neutralization of HNO₃ in Redox ICU an IAW Streams

The following memorandum outlines the procedures used on the neutralization of HNO3 in redox ICU and IAW streams, and the factors influencing their choice. The procedures involve a) hexone removal by evaporation in the presence of a retardant, b) destruction of the retardant, c) nitric acid elimination by boiling with aluminum and d) concentration of the remaining solution by evaporation.

A Numerical Method for Two-Dimensional Lagrangian Hydrodynamics (open access)

A Numerical Method for Two-Dimensional Lagrangian Hydrodynamics

Abstract: "A completely Lagrangian scheme for differencing hydrodynamical equations in two dimensions is described. The method conserves mass exactly. The advantages of Lagrangian over Eulerian schemes are briefly mentioned. An appendix gives the generalization to three dimensions."

Production of UO₃ by Calcination of Uranyl Peroxide

This report discusses the calcination or heating of UO₃. When UO₃ is heated, it loses ionic impurities and can produce uranyl peroxide.

Reactor Physics, Quarterly Progress Report, August-October, 1953

"A thorough analysis of the data obtained on depleted, natural, and enriched uranium lattices has been made. Consideration of the possible sources of discrepancies between theory and experiment has led to a suspicion of the calculated thermal neutron diffusion lengths. A series of diffusion length measurements in non-multiplying lattices of lead-cadmium alloy has been initiated. An analysis of some early exponential experiments on lattices proposed for a neutron production reactor has been carried out in order to determine whether experimental results on these more complicated structures are consistent with the analysis carried out for the "clean" lattices."

Theory of Alpha Decay of Spheroidal Nuclei (open access)

Theory of Alpha Decay of Spheroidal Nuclei

Abstract. Various effects of spheroidal nuclear distortion on the alpha decay process are considered theoretically. Differential equations governing alpha decay in the region beyond the maximum nuclear radius are derived. They consist of ordinary radial Schrodinger equations for alpha decay to various nuclear states with the addition of quadrupole interaction terms coupling the various equations. The significance of wave amplitudes of various angular momentum alpha groups as Fourier components of the total wave function is pointed out, and experimental alpha decay rate data for even-even nuclei are discussed in these terms.

Thermal Spikes and Uranium Instability (open access)

Thermal Spikes and Uranium Instability

Thermal spikes occurring during the life of a slug in a pile cause a momentary destruction of the original configuration of atoms in the metal. This process occurs at such a rate that in a thermal neutron flux of 10(13) neutrons per square centimeter per second each atom in the metal will be subject to temperatures above the melting point of uranium every 40 minutes.
