Evaluation of Oxidation-Resistant Ceramics for High-Temperature Reactor Elements (open access)

Evaluation of Oxidation-Resistant Ceramics for High-Temperature Reactor Elements

Abstract: "As a possible aid in the selection of ceramic materials for use in the fabrication of high-temperature reactor elements, the reported properties of 23 refractory oxidation-resistance ceramic compounds are tabulated. The thermal stresses and heat throughout capacities for nine of these compounds are estimated for conditions of steady heat flow and uniform heat generation in the temperature range of 1500 to 2500 F. The compounds studied have macroscopic thermal-neutron-absorption cross sections lower than 0.2 per centimeter. Data concerning the high-temperature stability of uranium compounds are tabulated for those with melting points above 2450 F."

Magnetic Properties of Insulators : Quarterly Report No. 7 Covering the Period from August 16, 1962 to November 15, 1962

The following quarterly progress report covers the period of August 15 to November 15, 1962. It summarizes three activities of the group. The first part is the optical study of the absorption band associated with the F-center in RbCl. The second part discusses some elementary calculations of the spin-lattice relaxation times, the primary purpose of this step is to indicate the nature of the theoretical problem faced and show the large gap between the value calculated theoretically and measured experimentally. The last section includes more data on the shape and recovery of the hole in a EPR band associated with the F-center in KCl.

The Rolling of Thorium Rod (open access)

The Rolling of Thorium Rod

Report discussing the rolling of thorium rods. Abstract: "Thorium rods, 1-7/16 inch in diameter, were rolled from Ames castings. The billets were roughed down in diamond-grooved rolls and finished in hand-rounding rolls. Remelted chips as well as primary-metal castings were rolled, and both yielded satisfactory rods. The surface quality of the rods was generally excellent, and the machined slugs were free of seams."

Pressure Balance in a Toroidal Pinch (open access)

Pressure Balance in a Toroidal Pinch

Abstract: In the study of a linear pinch, use of the equation of pressure balance has proven to be a powerful method of analyzing data taken with a magnetic probe. The toroidal pinch, however, is a geometrically more complicated object, and the use of the pressure balance equations is not so clean cut. It is the object of this note to analyze the pressure balance equations for a torus to the point where they might prove useful in interpreting probe data.

Magnetic Recorder for Nuclear Pulse Application : Covering the Period from October 6, 1959 to December 5, 1959

"Abstract: Data on analog magnetic tape characteristics are presented along with results from conventional and modulator playback system operational tests. Theoretical considerations imply that the modulator head should be loss sensitive to short term variations in record and playback tape speed. It is also pointed out that although a tape recorder operating at 7.5 in./sec has only 12 kcs bandwidth for sinusoidal wave forms. the record and play-back amplifiers for pulse recording can operate with other bandwidths. These amplifiers must be capable of passing a square wave with a frequency of 1.5 kcs. A square wave of such frequency represents the condition of 350 microsecond pulses with a 700 microsecond period. (J.R.D)."
