The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis IV. The Identity and Sequencefo the Intermediates in Sucrose Synthesis (open access)

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis IV. The Identity and Sequencefo the Intermediates in Sucrose Synthesis

The synthesis of sucrose from C{sup 14}0{sub 22} by green algae has been investigated and the intermediates separated by the method of paper chromatography. It is shown that sucrose is the first free sugar appearing during photosynthesis. It is apparently formed by condensation of the glucose-I-phosphate and a fructose phosphate. A series of radioautographs of paper chromatograms of extracts from plants which have photosynthesized for different periods of time has been prepared. The results indicate that 2-phosphoglyceric acid is the first product synthesized from C0{sub 2} during photosynthesis.

P Division monthly report, November 1948 (open access)

P Division monthly report, November 1948

This progress report discusses activities at the P Division for the month of November 1948. All piles operated at 275 megawatts (MW) throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities in this report and except that F Pile operated at a reduced level during the first half of the month. This operation at reduced level was incident to the leaking process tube reported last month. A total of 81.4 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. The 300 Area canned a total of 150 tons of acceptable slugs during the month to establish a new production record. On November 29 the operating schedule for the Melt Plant was changed from a three-shift to a two-shift, six-day week schedule. The backlog of material largely had been worked off and the new schedule is adequate for processing the current accumulation of scrap.

An analysis of the airspeeds and normal accelerations of Boeing B-247 and B-247D airplanes in commercial transport operation

From Introduction: "The results of analyses of V-G data given in references 1 to 5 have shown that the flight loads of airplanes operated in commercial transport service are influenced by operating speeds and by forecasting and dispatching practices as reflected in differences between operations during the prewar and wartime periods. The available data are summarized and the flight results are compared with the results of analyses made in references 1 to 5."

Physics group process report, April 1--30, 1948

The high rate neutron scaler has been removed from service for repair. Consequent study has led to the discovery of a double counting effect. The vacuum system of the vacuum balance is being redesigned and rebuilt so as to obtain a higher vacuum. The vapor pressure of postum was measured with a quartz sickle gauge between 0.3 and 90 mm. of mercury pressure at temperatures between 430{degrees} and 745{degrees}C. The least square representation of the data is the following: Log p = {sub T}{und 5377.8} + 7.2345 where p is the pressure in mm. of mercury and T is the absolute temperature. From this least square equation the extrapolated boiling point is 962.1{degrees}1{degrees}C. and the latent heat of vaporization is 24,597 calories per mole. A single crystal study of potassium chloride is being made since it is the crystal which is most nearly like a simple cubic lattice. The Geiger counter X-ray spectrometer belonging to Unit I was set up and a recorder attached so that certain patterns could be obtained more quickly. Continuation of the effusion experiment showed that data obtained were violently Inconsistent. The experimental work Is being dropped. At the end of the Physics Group Progress Report …

Electronics progress report, December 1--31, 1948

Equipment and supplies are being packed for moving to Mound Laboratory. Work was started on the development of a cathode-follower circuit to match a B-wall tube to its connecting cable. The final report and maintenance manual for the scaler-multiplier are almost finished. The 10 millivolt Speedomax recorder used by Group 3 in the study of electrodeposition potentials has been replaced with a 150 millivolt Speedomax, utilizing two recording points for simultaneous recording of radioactive deposition and the plating cell current. Three two-input B-wall mixers, three scaler-multipliers, one four-input Geiger-Mueller mixer and five Thyratron heater controls were delivered to Group 24. One high-current plating control, EL-173, was delivered to Group 17. The following instruments are complete: portable pulse generator, EL-261, the instruction book and photographs will be submitted for approval at an early date. Portable regulation checker, EL-258. Preliminary tests have been made, instructions are being written and drawings are being made.

The flexible rectangular wing in roll at supersonic flight speeds (open access)

The flexible rectangular wing in roll at supersonic flight speeds

From Summary: "The problem of the loss in rolling effectiveness at supersonic flight speeds is considered for the case of the rectangular wing. Equations are obtained from which can be calculated either the loss in rate of roll due to flexibility or the torsional stiffness required to maintain a given rate of roll, for two assumed variations of the spanwise distribution of torsional stiffness. A computation form and figures are provided so that calculations can be made without reference to the details of the analysis."

The Development of Cambered Airfoil Sections Having Favorable Lift Characteristics at Supercritical Mach Numbers (open access)

The Development of Cambered Airfoil Sections Having Favorable Lift Characteristics at Supercritical Mach Numbers

"Several groups of new airfoil sections, designated as the NACA 8-series, are derived analytically to have lift characteristics at supercritical Mach numbers which are favorable in the sense that the abrupt loss of lift, characteristic of the usual airfoil section at Mach numbers above the critical, is avoided. Aerodynamic characteristics determined, from two-dimensional windtunnel tests at Mach numbers up to approximately 0.9 are presented for each of the derived airfoils. Comparisons are made between the characteristics of these airfoils and the corresponding characteristics of representative NPiCA 6-series airfoils" (p. 1).
