The Comparative Performance of Roots Type Aircraft Engine Superchargers as Affected by Change in Impeller Speed and Displacement (open access)

The Comparative Performance of Roots Type Aircraft Engine Superchargers as Affected by Change in Impeller Speed and Displacement

"This report presents the results of tests made on three sizes of roots type aircraft engine superchargers. The impeller contours and diameters of these machines were the same, but the length were 11, 8 1/4, and 4 inches, giving displacements of 0.509, 0.382, and 0.185 cubic foot per impeller revolution. The information obtained serves as a basis for the examination of the individual effects of impeller speed and displacement on performance and of the comparative performance when speed and displacement are altered simultaneously to meet definite service requirements" (p. 3).

A Theoretical Investigation of Longitudinal Stability of Airplane with Free Controls Including Effect of Friction in Control System (open access)

A Theoretical Investigation of Longitudinal Stability of Airplane with Free Controls Including Effect of Friction in Control System

"The relation between the elevator hinge-moment parameters and the control-forces for changes in forward speed and in maneuvers is shown for several values of static stability and elevator mass balance. The stability of the short-period oscillations is shown as a series of boundaries giving the limits of the stable region in terms of the elevator hinge-moment parameters. The effects of static stability, elevator moment of inertia, elevator mass unbalance, and airplane density are also considered" (p. 1).

The effects of tip-mounted jet nacelles on the transonic characteristics of low-aspect-ratio wings (open access)

The effects of tip-mounted jet nacelles on the transonic characteristics of low-aspect-ratio wings

Report presenting an investigation of the effects of tip-mounted jet-engine nacelles on the aerodynamic characteristics of low-aspect-ratio rectangular and tapered wings using the transonic-bump technique. The effect of the tip-mounted nacelles was generally to increase the lift-curve slopes for wings of aspect ratio 2 or larger with upper or lower mounted nacelles causing larger increases than symmetrically mounted nacelles. Results regarding rectangular wings and tapered wings are provided.

The hazards to humans of wildfowl on REDOX contaminated swamp (open access)

The hazards to humans of wildfowl on REDOX contaminated swamp

Ducks, geese, coots, and other wild birds, both migratory and resident, have been swimming on the Redox waste water pond and eating the herbage and mud on the bottom. The pond is caused by the discharge of five to ten million gallons of water a day from the heating and cooling coils of reactor vessels in the Redox plant. At least twice in recent months leaks in the coils have permitted solutions of radioactive material to escape to the swamp. Once the leak was in the waste concentrator tank and once in the first oxidation tank, so that the material in the swamp would include significant amounts of every radioisotope found in irradiated uranium, including plutonium and all fission products. This paper discusses the hazards to humans from handling or eating wildfowl and to risk of both internal and external exposure.

An Investigation of the Effects of a Vortex-Generator Configuration on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/4-Scale Model of the X-1 Airplane (10-Percent-Thick Wing) (open access)

An Investigation of the Effects of a Vortex-Generator Configuration on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/4-Scale Model of the X-1 Airplane (10-Percent-Thick Wing)

From Summary: "An investigation of a vortex-generator configuration on the wings of a l/4-scale model of the X-1 airplane having a 10-percent-thick wing was conducted in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel. The effect of the vortex generators was determined by comparing the model aerodynamic characteristics, wing-pressure distributions, and wing-wake patterns for model configurations with and without vortex generators on the wings. Results are presented from tests at 0.1 increments in Mach number from about 0.69 to 0.99, at Reynolds numbers of about 4.1 x 10(exp 6) to 4.7 x 10(exp 6), and through an angle-of-attack range up to 1.5 deg at lower speeds and up to 5 deg at the highest speed."

T Plant first cycle waste scavenging (open access)

T Plant first cycle waste scavenging

A scavenging process for the TBP Plant wastes has recently been installed and is expected to result in a considerable reduction in the waste tankage required for storage of TBP Plant Wastes. A similar process has been developed for scavenging the first cycle waste from the BiPO{sub 4} Plants. A study of future requirements and availability of tank storage space indicates that in order to avoid an overall plant critical tank shortage, or the necessity of construction of new tanks, a T-Plant waste scavenging program should provide cribbing facilities by February, 1955. Since tank storage space is critical ad the cost of such storage is a sizable factor in the overall plant operating costs, an investigation of the feasibility of the installation of this waste scavenging process in T-Plant has been undertaken.

Redox decontamination performance (open access)

Redox decontamination performance

Since start-up of the Redox Plant, different types of decontamination difficulties have been experienced and corrective measures taken. Current decontamination performance is superior to that ever experienced before. However, with the apparent need for the for elimination of the permanganate Head-End process for the IAF oxidation, several modifications to the plant flowsheet and equipment have been planned in order to obtain satisfactory overall decontamination without permanganate Head-End. The objectives of the memorandum are: to summarize generally and briefly the decontamination experience of the Redox process operating on IAF oxidized by sodium dichromate; to indicate the decontamination which probably can be obtained with the new Phase 2 equipment and its improved performance; and to re-evaluate the timing and feasibility of the current approaches for solving the long-range Redox decontamination problems arising as a result of oxidation of IAF by sodium dichromate (vice potassium permanganate).

Calculation of Control Rod Worth in Appr-1 (open access)

Calculation of Control Rod Worth in Appr-1

Seven control rods will be used in the APPR-1 instead of five as originally planned. Critical experiments evaluating the rod worth for the APPR-1 have been performed at ORNL, and calculations have been carried out by ALCO interpreting these experimental results. The calculations indicate that the capability of any four of the original five rods to shut down the cold reactor at mid-life is marginal. The calculations are summarized in this memorandum. (auth)
