Investigations toward simplification of missile control systems (open access)

Investigations toward simplification of missile control systems

Paper presenting three ideas regarding potential simplifications of missile-control systems in order to make them more reliable without sacrificing system performance. The three methods presented include an autorotating-vane spoiler, a bellows flap, and free controls. All are based on modified airplane control systems.

Inspections performed by Du Pont on the telescope actuator system: Part 4 (open access)

Inspections performed by Du Pont on the telescope actuator system: Part 4

Five telescope actuator systems designated as ``R``, ``P``, ``L``, ``K`` and ``C`` were fabricated at New York Ship. All five were similar in specifications except for minor detail. For overall assembly refer to du Pont arrangement drawings W-153422, W-153423, and W-153424. These drawings illustrate ``R`` unit; however, they are representative of all units. They show a complete listing of material required and an overall view of the telescoping assembly. Since jigs and special tooling were set up to conform to a definite deck plate fabrication sequence, the inspection procedures and methods described in this book will follow logically the fabrication steps.

A Discussion of the Metallurgical Aspects of Thorium as a Fuel Material (open access)

A Discussion of the Metallurgical Aspects of Thorium as a Fuel Material

Data on thorium are compiled and the use of thorium as a fuel material is discussed. It was assumed that the general reactor configuration will follow the conventional SGR-SRE reactor design of a graphite-moderated sodium-cooled metallic fuel system. Factors outlined which affect the use of thorium as a fuel material are availability of ore, capacity of processing plants, purity specifications, design and use of materials in fuel elements which may affect chemical separation economics, and technical feasibility. General metallurgical properties of thorium are described including melting point, density, chemical purity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, phase transformations, corrosion in liquid metals, tensile and creep strength, dimensional stability, and alloying properties. Methods of chemical processing, fabrication, and cladding are outlined. The advantages and disadvantages in the use of thorium as a fuel are summarized. (M.C.G.)

BEVATRON RESEARCH MEETING V - HIGH ENERGY NUCLEAR INTERACTION (open access)

BEVATRON RESEARCH MEETING V - HIGH ENERGY NUCLEAR INTERACTION

There are two different types of investigation of interest in high energy nuclear phenomena. One can observe gross effects such as the production of large numbers of heavy particles of different types, or one can study the elementary particles themselves which result from these collisions, for example, the kappa mesons, to determine modes of decay and the energy spectra of the resulting particles. This discussion will deal with the gross aspects of high energy interactions and will review the work of Fermi: High Energy Nuclear Interactions, Progress in Theoretical Physics, 5, No. 4, July-August, 1950.

BEVATRON RESEARCH MEETING VI - HIGH ENERGY NUCLEAR INTERACTION (open access)

BEVATRON RESEARCH MEETING VI - HIGH ENERGY NUCLEAR INTERACTION

The relative probabilities for alternate processes initiated by a nucleon-nucleon collision depend on the dynamics involved and on the volume in phase space accessible to each final state. According to Fermi this last aspect alone may be of decisive importance. Such an assignment would follow were an approximate statistical equilibrium reached. The volume occupied by the incident nucleons and the associated pion clouds will have very large energy density at the instant of collision. Knowing that the interactions of the pion fields are strong, Fermi assumes that this energy is suddenly distributed among the various degrees of freedom present in the interaction volume in accord with statistical laws. He then computes the statistical probability that a certain number of pions will be created with a given energy distribution. It is then assumed that the energy will rapidly dissolve and that the particles into which the energy has been converted will fly out in all directions. Fermi argues that this approach may give a fairly good approximation to the actual case; since the number of possible states of the given energy is large and the probability of establishing a state to its average statistical weight will be increased by the number …
