Theoretical modeling and experimental characterization of planar defects in Y sub 2 Ba sub 4 Cu sub 6+x O sub 14+x

Crystallographic defects and phase transformations in the system Y{sub 2}Ba{sub 4}Cu{sub 6 + x}O{sub 14 + x}(0{le}{times}{le}4) are investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and static lattice, three dimensional Monte Carlo computer simulations. High resolution images of partially transformed (x = 2 to x = 1) material reveal a prevalence of CuO planar defects (stacking faults) associated with the transformation and an absence of disturbance to the perovskite Ba-Y-Ba blocks. An atomic mechanism involving the intercalculation and removal of extra CuO planes by partial dislocation climb, and requiring only a-b plane diffusion, is developed for the formation of such planar defects during changes in the layered YBaCuO crystal structure. Monte Carlo simulations based on the proposed transformation mechanism accurately reproduce the observed defects and known equilibrium structures. 24 refs., 4 figs.

Monte Carlo optimization of depth-of-interaction resolution in PET crystals

The light distribution along one edge of a PET scintillation crystal was investigated with a Monte Carlo simulation. This position-dependent light can be used to measure the 511 keV photon interaction position in the crystal on an event by event basis, thus reducing radial elongation. The expected full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the light distribution on the 3 {times} 30 mm{sup 2} surface of a 3 {times} 10 {times} 30 mm{sup 3} bismuth germanate (BGO) crystal surrounded by a diffuse reflector was determined to be 3.0 mm. This light distribution does not change as the width (originally 3 mm) is varied from 1 to 6 mm, but decreases monotonically from 3.0 to 1.8 mm FWHM as the height (originally 10 mm) is reduced to 3 mm. Other geometrical modifications were simulated, including numerous corner reflectors on the opposing 3 {times} 30 mm{sup 2} surface, which reduced the FWHM to 2.4 mm. The response of a dual wedge photodiode combined with the predicted light distribution for the 3 {times} 10 {times} 30 mm{sup 3} BGO simulation crystal results in an expected depth of interaction resolution of 7.5 mm FWHM.

Numerical simulations of heterogeneous chemical reactions coupled to fluid flow in varying thermal fields

A numerical simulator of reactive chemical transport with coupling from precipitation-dissolution reactions to fluid flow, via changes of porosity and permeability, is applied to precipitation-dissolution of quartz and calcite in spatially and temporally variable fields of temperature. Significant effects on fluid flow are found in the quartz-silicic acid system in the presence of persistent, strong gradient of temperature. Transient heat flow in the quartz-silicic acid system and in a calcite-calcium ion-carbonato species system produces vanishingly small effects on fluid flow.

Basic features of coherent radiation generated by relativistic charge bunches

Radiation generated by relativistic charges can be analyzed and described in exquisite detail. One reason that such detailed analysis is possible is because the phases of radiated photons often are determined completely by the initial conditions of the relativistic charges and the radiating system. The phase relationships between the initial charges and the radiated photons represent coherence in the emitted radiation. A previous paper described how this coherence could affect the spatial and spectral distributions of radiation generated by a single charge in a periodic radiator. The present paper discusses a complementary issue; namely, how the temporal shape of a relativistic charge bunch can emphasize specific features of the radiation generated at a single interaction site. 3 refs., 4 figs.

Properties of CMOS devices and circuits fabricated on high-resistivity, detector-grade silicon

A CMOS process that is compatible with silicon p-i-n radiation detectors has been developed and characterized. A total of twelve mask layers are used in the process. The NMOS device is formed in a retrograde well while the PMOS device is fabricated directly in the high-resistivity silicon. Isolation characteristics are similar to a standard foundary CMOS process. Circuit performance using 3 {mu}m design rules has been evaluated. The measured propagation delay and power-delay product for a 51-stage ring oscillator was 1.5 ns and 43 fJ, respectively. Measurements on a simple cascode amplifier results in a gain-bandwidth product of 200 MHz at a bias current of 15 {mu}A. The input-referred noise of the cascode amplifier is 20 nV/{radical}Hz at 1 MHz.

Genetic changes in Mammalian cells transformed by helium cells

Midterm Syrian Hamster embryo (SHE) cells were employed to study high LET-radiation induced tumorigenesis. Normal SHE cells (secondary passage) were irradiated with accelerated helium ions at an incident energy of 22 MeV/u (9--10 keV/{mu}m). Transformed clones were isolated after growth in soft agar of cells obtained from the foci of the initial monolayer plated postirradiation. To study the progression process of malignant transformation, the transformed clones were followed by monolayer subculturing for prolonged periods of time. Subsequently, neoplasia tests in nude mice were done. In this work, however, we have focused on karyotypic changes in the banding patterns of the chromosomes during the early part of the progressive process of cell transformation for helium ion-induced transformed cells. 26 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

Static and dynamical properties of QCD at finite temperature and density are reviewed. Non-perturbative aspects of the QCD plasma and modification of the hadron properties associated with the chiral transition are discussed on the basis of lattice data, effective theories and QCD sum rules. Special emphasis is laid on the importance of the finite baryon density to see the effects of the restoration of chiral symmetry in experiment.

Constraints on fermion mixing with exotics

We analyze the constraints on the mixing angles of the standard fermions with new heavy particles with exotic SU(2) {times} U(1) quantum number assignments (left-handed singlets or right-handed doublets), that appear in many extensions of the electroweak theory. The updated Charged Current and Neutral Current experimental data, including also the recent Z-peak measurements, are considered. The results of the global analysis of all these data are then presented.

Example of a quantum field theory based on a nonlinear Lie algebra

In this contribution to Tini Veltman's Festschrift we shall give a paedagogical account of our work on a new class of gauge theories called W gravities. They contain higher spin gauge fields, but the usual no-go theorems for interacting field theories with spins exceeding two do not apply since these theories are in two dimensions. It is, of course, well known that ghost-free interacting massless spin 2 fields ( the metric') are gauge fields, and correspond to the geometrical notion of general coordinate transformations in general relativity, but it is yet unknown what extension of these ideas is introduced by the presence of massless higher spin gauge fields. A parallel with supergravity may be drawn: there the presence of massless spin 3/2 fields (gravitinos) corresponds to local fermi-bose symmetries of which these gravitinos are the gauge fields. Their geometrical meaning becomes only clear if one introduces superspace (with bosonic and fermionic coordinates): they correspond to local transformations of the fermionic coordinates. For W gravity one might speculate on a kind of W-superspace with extra bosonic coordinates.

Generation of nonequilibrium optical phonons in GaAs/AlAs quantum wells by intrasubband and intersubband scatterings

The generation of a nonequilibrium population of optical phonons by photoexcited hot electrons in semiconductor quantum wells is investigated theoretically. The microscopic model of electron-phonon interaction proposed by Huang and Zhu has been used to compute the distributions of confined longitudinal optical phonons and interface modes in GaAs/AlAs quantum wells as a function of well width. Experimental tests of the calculated distributions by Raman scattering are discussed.

The structure and faceting behavior of tilt grain boundaries in aluminum

This work describes a number of experimental observations on the structure and behavior of {Sigma}99 and other near-90{degree} <110> tilt boundaries in bicrystals of aluminum. The continuous bicrystal structure employed in these studies is based on the symmetry properties inherent in heteroepitaxial growth. A thin film grown in this geometry consists of intertwined grains surrounding each other but with only two grain orientations.

Stability of Resonator Configurations in the Presence of Free-Electron Laser Interactions

The stability of empty resonators (or cold cavities) has been widely studied, and is well understood. Here we consider the stability of symmetric resonator systems when there is a free-electron laser (FEL) interaction present within the cavity. We first construct a linear thick-lens model of the FEL and analytically study the dependence of resonator stability on its geometry. Next, we employ a nonlinear, three-dimensional FEL oscillator code to study the dependence of FEL performance on the cavity configuration. The analytic and numerical approaches are compared and it is shown that they agree quite well. It is found that the region of stability is shifted toward longer cavities, and beyond the concentric configuration. Between the confocal and the concentric configurations, where the empty-resonator analysis predicts stability, there now appear regions of instability. We find that operation near the concentric configuration is preferable, and operation very near the confocal should be avoided.

Beam Comissioning of the PEP-II High Energy Ring

The PEP-II High Energy Ring (HER), a 9 GeV electron storage ring, has been in commissioning since spring 1997. Initial beam commissioning activities focused on systems checkout and commissioning and on determining the behavior of the machine systems at high beam currents. This phase culminated with the accumulation of 0.75 A of stored beam-sufficient to achieve design luminosity--in January 1998 after 3.5 months of beam time. Collisions with the 3 GeV positron beam of the Low Energy Ring (LER) were achieved in Summer of 1998. At high beam currents, collective instabilities have been seen. Since then, commissioning activities for the HER have shifted in focus towards characterization of the machine and a rigorous program to understand the machine and the beam dynamics is presently underway.

Economic Analysis of Ilumex, A Project to Promote Energy-Efficient Residential Lighting in Mexico

A higher penetration of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for household lighting can reduce growth in peak electricity demand, reduce sales of subsidized electricity, and lessen environmental impacts. This paper describes an economic analysis of a project designed to promote high penetration rates of CFLs in two cities in Mexico. Our analysis indicates that the project will bring substantial net economic benefits to Mexico, the utility, and the average customer. In the absence of any subsidy to CFLs, most customers will see a payback period longer than two years. By sharing some of the anticipated net benefit, CFE, the utility company, can reduce the payback period to a maximum of two years for all customers. CFE's role is thus crucial to the successful implementation of the project. Expanding the Ilumex project to a Mexico-wide program would make a significant contribution towards meeting the planned addition of generation capacity by the year 2000.

A Generalized {ital K} Correction for Type Ia Supernovae: Comparing {ital R}-band Photometry Beyond {ital z=9.2} with B,V, and {ital R}-band Nearby Photometry

Photometric measurements show that, as a group, nearby Type Ia supernovae follow similar light curves and reach similar peak magnitudes (Branch & Tammann 1992). Thus, these supernovae may serve as standard candles or calibrated candles at cosmological distances. Magnitudes of local and distant supernovae, both in the same filter band, are compared using a K correction to account for the different spectral regions incident on that filter. A generalized approach compares magnitudes in different bands for the nearby and distant supernovae, bands that are selected to give sensitivity in corresponding regions of the unredshifted and redshifted spectra. Thus, R magnitudes for supernovae at z {approx} 0.5 are compared with B magnitudes of local supernovae. We compute these generalized K corrections over a range of redshifts and bandpass pairs and discuss their advantages over the traditional single-band K correction. In particular, errors near maximum light can be kept below 0.05 mag out to at least z = 0.6, whereas the traditional K correction is less accurate and can be difficult to determine beyond z &gt; 0.2.
