From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Summary of airborne radiometric surveys of certain sediments in Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, and Montana

This map shows geologic formations of sandstone, shale, siltstone, mudstone, and coal, carbonaceous markers, coal seams, creeks and rivers, draws and gulches, mountains, buttes, and numbered locations of uranium test holes.

Report documenting standard x-ray diffraction powder patterns for various compounds, intended to replace previous data or provide information for new substances. It describes the methods and, for each substance, outlines any previous data as well as information about the sample used and structural data, with a table of diffraction patterns.

The report consists of three principal sections; environmental setting, water resource management, and the hydrologic system. The environmental setting describes the land and people as related to water resources. The section on water resource management is intended to provide practical information needed for the planning and management of water resources. The section on the hydrologic system is a more technical discussion of water in the Red River basin. The section on water management can be used to locate the water, determine the amount available and its quality; whereas, the section on the hydrologic system describes the operation of the system how water moves through the system and why the quality is as it is.

In this report, information is presented by means of tables and illustrations preceded by brief explanations. It includes the agencies collecting the data, the number of stations located on surface and ground waters where temperature measurements are made, the distribution of stations by States and by the 21 regions of the Water Resources Council.

The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission conducted an airborne radioactivity survey of the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma beginning in December 1955 and ending in May 1956. All or parts of Archer, Clay, and Montague Counties in northern Texas and Carter, Cotton, Jefferson, and Stephens Counties in southern Oklahoma were surveyed. Particular attention was paid to those areas where exposures are found of red beds of the Permian Wichita Group. Field examinations were conducted of anomalies discovered by airborne reconnaissance as well as those reported by private individuals. Forty localities were examined, the majority in sandstones, siltstones, or conglomerates. Uranium and copper minerals were identified at several localities. Ferruginous staining, bleaching of the sandstone color, calcium carbonate cement, and carbonized plant remains are common to the deposits

Presented here are notes for a course in PL/I. They might serve as a guide to those who are developing a course, or as class notes for that course. They might be useful as a textbook independent of any course; as such a textbook, however, they are not self-contained because of the built-in assumption that they will supplement lectures and be accompanied by manuals. Very nearly the full language is taught here, with the emphasis on concepts rather than practical details. Discussion of I/O is avoided until roughly the midpoint of the course. The hoped-for consequence for students is an enhanced perception and understanding of the many concepts and their logical relationships. The dawning of the age of transportability for PL/I programs gives the user a reason, for the first time, to avoid convenient but illegal language.

From purpose and scope: The purpose of this investigation is to 1) study the hydrologic system in a glaciated terrain typified by numerous lakes, with particular focus on the effects of lake-ground-water interchange, 2) simulate the natural system by using two digital modeling methods--areal (map view) and vertical section, and 3) evaluate the utility of the models and determine the kinds and amount of basic data needed to obtain reasonable simulations.

From Abstract and Introduction: "This paper is, in essence, a report on the extension of the techniques first suggested in NBS Monograph 103 "Realistic Uncertainties and the Mass Measurement Process" to the area of length measurement. This paper covers the progress to date on the long gage blocks (from 5 to 20 in the length). The purpose of this purpose is to verify the closure between the "old" process and the "new" process, and to describe the present "points of departure" upon which some of the current assigned length values are based."

From introduction: The purpose of this report is to describe the results of the data collection at these bridge sites and compare the results with existing laboratory and field data and with those results predicted from selected scour formulas.

This report critically reviews the available information pertinent to the potential use of uranium-plutonium-zirconium alloy fuels clad with stainless steel in LMFBR's. The areas considered include breeding potential, burnup potential, thermal performance, fuel fabricability, fuel reprocessing, and safety considerations. Because information on uranium-plutonium-zirconium alloys is limited, wide use is made of experience with EBR-II metallic driver fuel to infer advantages and limitations of uranium-plutonium-zirconium fuels. It is concluded that sufficient potential exists for the applicability of uranium-plutonium-zirconium fuels to LMBFR's to warrant additional analytical and experimental studies.

From introduction: This report covers the results of an ERDA-sponsored study to provide a preliminary evaluation of the uranium potential of the central portion of the Great Plains. It was carried out by the University of Kansas under contract number AT (05-1)-1642. This work is part of the ERDA National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Program. Texas Instruments Incorporated contributed to the study as a subcontractor.

This report includes several photographs and illustrations, as well as text, to describe a portable unit for filtering water samples. It "is preliminary and has not been edited or reviewed for conformity with Geological Survey standards and nomenclature."

A collection of benchmark problems is used to test the finite-strain formulation of the LIFE-III fast-reactor fuel-element code. Analytical solutions for thick-wall cylinders loaded by internal and external pressure, valid for arbitrarily large strains, are presented for a linear viscous material. Similar problems are formulated for a nonlinear material, and numerical solutions are obtained using the Runge-Kutta method for the integration of an ordinary differential equation. These solutions are then compared with the corresponding solutions obtained using the LIFE-III code. With a proper choice of the number of spatial regions and time steps, good agreement is obtained between the two sets of solutions. The results indicate that the structural-analysis portion of the revised LIFE-III is valid for large strains.
