Oral History Interview with Albert Barton, November 6, 2010

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Albert Barton. Barton joined the Navy and was trained as a radioman. He became a crewman on an Avenger torpedo bomber in October 1943. Barton flew off of the USS Mission Bay (CVE-59) and the USS Tripoli (CVE-64) and performed anti-submarine patrols in the North Atlantic. He describes how depth charges were dropped, the armament of the plane, and how they were trained to skip-bomb. Barton was then sent to the Pacific where he flew off of the USS Anzio (CVE-57) for the remainder of the war. He describes an incident where his plane had a failed landing and ended upside-down in the water. Barton had to break some glass in the cockpit to escape. He flew ground support missions over Okinawa. Barton discusses how the radio and radar functioned on his plane. He was discharged several months after the surrender.

Statistical Guidelines for a Pilot Observer Program to Estimate Turtle Takes in the Hawaii Longline Fishery

Abstract: Statistical guidelines are described for the development of a pilot scientific observer sampling program to collect turtle interactions data from the Hawaii longline fishery. The best available data are presented and potential sources of variability in longline turtle take rates are discussed. A stratified sampling design for a pilot survey is developed based on time and target species. An array of sample size choices for the pilot program is presented covering a range of tolerance levels and confidence levels for estimation of total turtle take.

Introduction: A dependable water supply is required for Naval Magazine Lualualei, Waikele Branch. The water supply for Naval Magazine Lualualei, Waikele Branch, Oahu, Hawaii has been dependent on Oahu Sugar Co.'s water for many years. Because the supply of water from Oahu Sugar Co. is not always dependable, in March 1982, the Pacific Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the productivity and water quality of an abandonment Navy well. The well, No. 2401-01, is located in Waikele Gulch near the confluence of Waikele and Kipapa Streams (fig. 1.0-1)

Interview with Frank Fujita, a Texas National Guard WWII veteran and POW from Abilene, Texas. Fujita recounts his experiences as a captured member of 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery (the "the Lost Battalion"), including: joining the Guard and deploying to East Asia; diversion to Brisbane and assignment to Malang, Java; repelling a Japanese infantry assault; attempted evasion of Japanese forces before being captured; and internment and labor at Surabaja, Bicycle Camp in Batavia, Changi Camp in Singapore, Nagasaki, and Omori Camp in Tokyo. Fujita recorded his POW experiences in an encrypted diary.
