Uranium in the Southern United States (open access)

Uranium in the Southern United States

From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Aerodynamic characteristics and flying qualities of a tailless triangular-wing airplane configuration as obtained from flights of rocket-propelled models at transonic and supersonic speeds (open access)

Aerodynamic characteristics and flying qualities of a tailless triangular-wing airplane configuration as obtained from flights of rocket-propelled models at transonic and supersonic speeds

Report discussing a flight investigation of rocket-powered models of a tailless triangular-wing airplane configuration was made through the transonic and low supersonic speed range at the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Station at Wallops Island, Va. An analysis of the aerodynamic coefficients, stability derivatives, and flying qualities based on the results obtained from the successful flight tests of three models is presented.

An Analytical Investigation of the Effect of the Rate of Increase of Turbulent Kinetic Energy in the Stream Direction on the Development of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Adverse Pressure Gradients (open access)

An Analytical Investigation of the Effect of the Rate of Increase of Turbulent Kinetic Energy in the Stream Direction on the Development of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Adverse Pressure Gradients

"The purpose of this paper is to provide a derivation of the general integral form of the boundary equation without neglecting the Reynolds normal-stress term. Two special cases of this equation are given explicitly" (p. 2).

Accelerations and bottom pressures measured on a B-24D airplane in a ditching test (open access)

Accelerations and bottom pressures measured on a B-24D airplane in a ditching test

From Introduction: "This report presents only that portion of the data from the first ditching which was to be used roughly establish the accelerations experienced by the pilot and the amount of water pressure to which the fuselage structure was subjected during the ditching."

Feasibility Study for Dyke Marsh Demonstration Area, Potomac River, Virginia (open access)

Feasibility Study for Dyke Marsh Demonstration Area, Potomac River, Virginia

Abstract: "Results of an investigation conducted to determine the engineering feasibility of using dredged material to expand an existing marshland area are presented. Dredged material obtained from maintenance dredging operations was found suitable for use as marsh substrate and site conditions were found adequate for construction of a containment facility. Factors evaluated in the study include site-specific feasibility of marsh expansion using dredged material, sizing of the demonstration area to meet water-quality and storage needs, preliminary design of the containment facility, procedures for the placement of dredged material, and identification of alternative construction methods, materials, and costs. Overall feasibility of marsh expansion was demonstrated and additional investigations were recommended for the project."
