[Letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter to Melba Davis Whatley, October 7, 1992]

Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Melba Davis Whatley. The letter is in regards to a discussion over advocacy programs and wanting to discuss these ideas with school board members / political leaders to have them look in depth at the discipline-based art education and what contributions it makes to the education of the students. Davis and McCarter mention the Texas Association of School Boards, TASB and believe they could be used a vehicle for doing most of the ground work on advocacy. If NTIEVA works with TASB now they can get a presentation together on art education for their annual conference. Davis and McCarter end the letter by thanking Whatley for her ideas and to contact them if she has any others. Copied on the letters are Leilani Lattin Duke, Vicki Rosenberg and M'Lou Bancroft, faculty of the Getty Center. Scribbled at the end of the letter reads, "Mrs. Whatley, I will be in Austin on October 29 and 30. If you'd like to discuss this, perhaps we ... have dinner on Thursday evening. Jack"

Disclosure and its Perceived Impact as Mediators of the Long-Term Consequences of Child Sexual Abuse (open access)

Disclosure and its Perceived Impact as Mediators of the Long-Term Consequences of Child Sexual Abuse

The primary purpose of the present study was to investigate factors associated with childhood sexual abuse which mediate long-term effects. Of particular interest were the mediators of disclosure and its perceived impact, as well as variables related to the severity of the abuse. Also of interest were impact areas related to a history of molestation which have received little attention in the literature. Five hundred and seventy-five female undergraduates completed an extensive questionnaire with measures of family background, childhood and adult sexual experiences, health status, and psychological variables. Of these subjects, 286 reported at least one incident of child sexual abuse. It was hypothesized that those females with histories of sexual abuse who received a positive response to their disclosure of abuse would demonstrate more adaptive adult functioning as compared to those victims receiving a negative response, or those who never disclosed. Significant differences were not detected among the three groups on the outcome measures. A number of reasons were explored for why these differences may not have been detected in the present investigation. Although differences were not detected for disclosure status, significant differences were detected between females reporting a history of child sexual abuse and those reporting no abuse …

7-GeV Advanced Photon Source Instrumentation Initiative. Conceptual Design Report (open access)

7-GeV Advanced Photon Source Instrumentation Initiative. Conceptual Design Report

In this APS Instrumentation Initiative, 2.5-m-long and 5-m-long insertion-device x-ray sources will be built on 9 straight sections of the APS storage ring, and an additional 9 bending-magnet sources will also be put in use. The front ends for these 18 x-ray sources will be built to contain and safeguard access to these bright x-ray beams. In addition, funds will be provided to build state-of-the-art insertion-device beamlines to meet scientific and technological research demands well into the next century. This new initiative will also include four user laboratory modules and a special laboratory designed to meet the x-ray imaging research needs of the users. The Conceptual Design Report (CDR) for the APS Instrumentation Initiative describes the scope of all the above technical and conventional construction and provides a detailed cost and schedule for these activities. According to these plans, this new initiative begins in FY 1994 and ends in FY 1998. The document also describes the preconstruction R & D plans for the Instrumentation Initiative activities and provides the cost estimates for the required R & D.
