[Geothermal resource/reservoir investigations based on heat flow and thermal gradient data for the US]. 7. quarterly technical progress report

During the report period, activity has continued to focus on the task of implementing the exploration well data base. In addition the author has continued to work on the tasks of the maintenance of the WWW site with the heat flow and gradient data base, and development of a modeling capability for analysis of the geothermal system exploration data. He is implementing the data base template for geothermal system temperature-depth/gradient/heat flow data to be used in conjunction with the regional temperature-depth/gradient/heat flow data base that he had already developed. Some results of the implementation are included with this report in the form of graphic summaries of the data prepared from the assembled data base. He has continued to enter data into the geothermal data base. The implementation this quarter has continued to focus on the state of Nevada as the most number of wells are there and few of the wells have been previously available in a data base. During this quarter he has maintained the Internet home page illustrating and having available for distribution the regional data base and maps. The address of the page is http://www.smu.edu/{approximately}geothermal/.

High gain preamplifier module (PAM) engineering prototype for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser system

We describe recent results and developments in the preamplifier module (PAM) engineering prototype located in NIF s front end or Optical Pulse Generation (OPG) system. This prototype uses the general laser design developed on a physics testbed and integrates NIP type packaging as well as controls and diagnostics. We will present laser, mechanical and electrical hardware designed and built to date as well as laser energetics measurements.

Development system performance issues of the NIF master oscillator and pulse forming networking (open access)

Development system performance issues of the NIF master oscillator and pulse forming networking

A crucial step in the development of a complex laser system is initial testing of an integrated system. Issues arise at the system level which are not easily observed in component level testing. The NIF master oscillator room (MOR) contains a network of fiber and integrated optic components which can interact, potentially reducing system performance. Here we present some of the system problems we have seen in integrated tests and our solutions. Issues include ASE in the fiber amplifiers, filtering effects in the PM fiber, and regulation of average optical power.

Clean Water Act Reauthorization in the 105th Congress (open access)

Clean Water Act Reauthorization in the 105th Congress

In the 105th Congress, legislation to reauthorize the Clean Water Act was not been introduced, and no major House or Senate committee activity occurred. EPA and states' water quality inventories have identified wet weather flows (including agricultural runoff, urban storm water, and sewer overflows) as the largest remaining threat to water quality. EPA's clean water programs are now focusing to a large extent on solving wet weather pollution problems. These issues may be addressed legislatively, as well. At issue is whether and how to detail wet weather programs in the Act versus allowing flexibility that recognizes the site-specific nature of intermittent wet weather pollution.

An overlapping Schwarz method for spectral element simulation of three-dimensional incompressible flows. (open access)

An overlapping Schwarz method for spectral element simulation of three-dimensional incompressible flows.

As the sound speed is infinite for incompressible flows, computation of the pressure constitutes the stiffest component in the time advancement of unsteady simulations. For complex geometries, efficient solution is dependent upon the availability of fast solvers for sparse linear systems. In this paper we develop a Schwarz preconditioner for the spectral element method using overlapping subdomains for the pressure. These local subdomain problems are derived from tensor products of one-dimensional finite element discretizations and admit use of fast diagonalization methods based upon matrix-matrix products. In addition, we use a coarse grid projection operator whose solution is computed via a fast parallel direct solver. The combination of overlapping Schwarz preconditioning and fast coarse grid solver provides as much as a fourfold reduction in simulation time over previously employed methods based upon deflation for parallel solution of multi-million grid point flow problems.

Neural Network Modeling of the Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery System (open access)

Neural Network Modeling of the Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery System

Battery systems have traditionally relied on extensive build and test procedures for product realization. Analytical models have been developed to diminish this reliance, but have only been partially successful in consistently predicting the performance of battery systems. The complex set of interacting physical and chemical processes within battery systems has made the development of analytical models a significant challenge. Advanced simulation tools are needed to more accurately model battery systems which will reduce the time and cost required for product realization. Sandia has initiated an advanced model-based design strategy to battery systems, beginning with the performance of lithiumhhionyl chloride cells. As an alternative approach, we have begun development of cell performance modeling using non-phenomenological models for battery systems based on artificial neural networks (ANNs). ANNs are inductive models for simulating input/output mappings with certain advantages over phenomenological models, particularly for complex systems. Among these advantages is the ability to avoid making measurements of hard to determine physical parameters or having to understand cell processes sufficiently to write mathematical functions describing their behavior. For example, ANN models are also being studied for simulating complex physical processes within the Li/SOC12 cell, such as the time and temperature dependence of the anode interracial …
