Application of the Variational Method to the Calculation of the Time Dependence of the Neutron Flux in Small Pulsed Slabs, Cylinders and Spheres
The variational method is applied to the monoenergetic time dependent transport equation to obtain a simple relation for the asymptotic decay constant in small pulsed assemblies. The results indicate that flat trial functions may be a reasonable representation of the flux distributions in the thin slab limit. This approach is superior to many of the usual transport approximations. (auth)

Applications of Monte Carlo Calculations to SGR Reactors
Monte Carlo (MC) calculations were made that show that an observed reactivity increase due to fuel rod bowing in the Sodium Reactor Experiment can be accounted for by the accompanying change in the thermal flux distribution. The questionable reliability of calculations with a simplified fuel element model that indicated the same relation prompted the MC calculations. Comparison with experimental results and results calculated by other means established the reliability of the MC calculations. (D.C.W.)

DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM-BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report, January 1 through March 31, 1963
Three batches of PuO/sub 2/ were prepared via the plutonium peroxide route. Except for the high tap density, it was found that the powder characteristics of PuO/sub 2/ prepared in this manner are similar to the characteristics of PuO/sub 2/ prepared by the oxalate route. Modifications were made to equipment for preparation of mixed oxides to achieve better reproducibility and minimize operator time. A study was initiated to assess the feasibility of using gamma spectrometry for rapid in-process determination of plutonium in solutions that also contain uranium. It was found that plutonium can be determined to within 1% Provided that the uranium concentration is known to better than 2 mg/ml. Plutonium separation studies using TTA extraction were continued and the determination of cesium and strontium fission products by flame photometry was investigated. The effect of carbon content on the weight loss of PuO/sub 2/ during sintering was determined. Metallographic examination of sintered UO/sub 2/--35 wt% PuO/sub 2/ pellets indicated that the low densities obtained may be due to grain growth and broadening of grain boundaries. Results of a questionnaire survey are presented on reactor supervisor and operator education, experience, and training, and on certification procedures by reactor category. The questionnaires were obtained from 362 supervisors, 393 operators, 44 supervisor trainees, and 139 operator trainees.

The Effect of Chronic Gamma Irradiation on Apical Dominance of Trees
Cherry and apple trees subjected to low doses of gamma irradiation (average of 16 and 34 r/day) for 10 years produced atypical branch development and reversal of dominance which could be attributed to the decrease or inactivation of auxin resulting from the irradiation. (auth)

Fabrication and Properties of Seamless Tungsten Tubing
A process for the production of seamless tungsten tubing is described. The process consists of the extrusion of sintered powder sleeves at elevated temperatures to sizes close to the final dimension. The tubing is finished by warm drawing. A size range of 0.100-in, diameter to 1 1/2-in. diameter has been fabricated. A preliminary evaluation of properties of the extruded tubes is given. (auth)

Gas-Bearing Blower Manufactured by Societe Rateau for the Ultra High Temperature Reactor Experiment
Design features are given for a helium blower operating on hydrodynamic gas bearings, manufactured for use in the Ultra-High Temperature Reactor Experiment. With inlet helium at 495 psi and 100 deg F, the blower is designed to produce a pressure rise of 15 psi at a flow rate of 120 lb/hr. (T.F.H.)
