Determination of boundary-layer transition Reynolds numbers by surface-temperature measurements of a 10 degree cone in various NACA supersonic wind tunnels (open access)

Determination of boundary-layer transition Reynolds numbers by surface-temperature measurements of a 10 degree cone in various NACA supersonic wind tunnels

Report presenting an investigation in several NACA wind tunnels to determine transition Reynolds numbers on a 10 degree cone at zero angle of attack. The trends of transition Reynolds number with stream Reynolds number and Mach number are not consistent across the different tunnels. These inconsistencies are attributed to variations in free-stream turbulence, flow irregularities introduced by compressor systems, and other airstream disturbances like compression- or expansion-wave boundary-layer interactions.

The Effectiveness of Spray Cooling (open access)

The Effectiveness of Spray Cooling

Abstract: "A possible method of cooling a liquid-fuel reactor is by spraying liquid metal through the liquid fuel, and then circulating the liquid metal through a heat exchanger. To evaluate the effectiveness of this cooling method, a few simple experiments were made with mercury sprayed through water. On the basis of the results, it was concluded that this method was intrinsically a low-power-density method, which could not find application except where a low fissionable-material inventory was the dominating requirement in a low-power reactor. Even there, it is thought that a boiling homogeneous reactor might be superior. The results are reported, in spite of their probably lack of value in the reactor program, simply to make the record complete."

Effects of an Atomic Explosion on Underground and Basement Types of Home Shelters (open access)

Effects of an Atomic Explosion on Underground and Basement Types of Home Shelters

Underground earth-covered shelters were exposed G to a 16.4-kt, 300-ft tower shot at ranges of 1230 ft (one), 1450 ft (one), 1860 ft (five), and 3506 ft (one). Two types of basement shelters were constructed in each of the test houses at 3500 and 7500 ft. Instrumentation was by gammaradiation badges, paraffin cubes, and nylon swatches. Attempts were made to measure permanent deflections of concrete roof slabs. Mannequins were placed in several shelters for purposes of demonstration and observation of blast-caused movement. A weighted mannequin in the underground shelter at 1230 it was broken in half; an unweighted one (child size) was thrown to the floor. All other mannequins remained in place, undamaged. Paraffin cubes and nylon swntches showed no evidence of thermal damage. Fallout conditions made it impossible to determine initial gamma-radiation quantities. There was no cracking or permanent deflection of the concrete roof slabs. Except for a wood-covered, trench type shelter, which partially failed because of faulty construction, the shelters showed no blast damage. Thermal energy entering the shelters probably would not have caused skin burns to human occupants. Adequacy of the shelters under full design loads could not be determined because pressures were lower than expected, but …

Electrostatic spark ignition-source hazard in airplane crashes (open access)

Electrostatic spark ignition-source hazard in airplane crashes

Report presenting an investigation of the hazard of igniting airplane crash fires by electrostatic sparks, which are generated when detached airplane parts fly through clouds of dust and fuel mist. Within the limits of variables studied, the rates with which airplane wreckage collected a charge were directly proportional to the rate at which clay dust or fuel mist was intercepted. Results regarding the experimental charging of airplane parts, electrostatic ignition hazard, and investigation of protective coating are provided.

An experimental investigation of secondary flow in an accelerating, rectangular elbow with 90 degrees of turning (open access)

An experimental investigation of secondary flow in an accelerating, rectangular elbow with 90 degrees of turning

Report presenting secondary flow tests on an accelerating elbow with 90 degrees of turning designed for prescribed velocities that eliminate boundary-layer separation by avoiding local decelerations along the walls. Secondary flows were investigated for six boundary-layer thicknesses generated on the plane walls of the elbow by upstream spoilers. Results regarding the downstream total-pressure distribution and spanwise wall-static-pressure distributions are provided.

The Flow About a Section of a Finite-Aspect-Ratio NACA 0018 Airfoil on a Transonic Bump

Note presenting pressure distributions on a semispan rectangular wing model with an NACA 0015 airfoil section and a moderate aspect ratio at one spanwise station in tests made on a transonic bump in the 16-foot high-speed wind tunnel. The results indicated that at a fixed angle of attack, a region developed over the airfoil wherein the Mach number at each point remained essentially constant as the free-stream Mach number was increased above the critical.
