Charge transfer associations are a well-established phenomena and a rather extensively investigated one also. Since the acceptor component of such complexes normally does not exist as a liquid under standard conditions, they wish to report on two organic liquids which function as acceptor components with suitable complimentary molecules. As indicated in Figure 1 (the presence of an extended shoulder in the spectra of the mixture), pentafluorobenzonitrile (PFBN) complexes with N,N,N{prime},N{prime}-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD), with N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA), and with phenothiazine in cyclohexane. In addition, crystalline complexes of TMPN-PFBN and DMA-PFBN are obtained when the pure materials are mixed. These two organic bases also form solid complexes with hexafluorobenzene (HFB) when the materials are mixed in the pure state in a ratio of 1:1. However, new absorption bands are not detected in the spectra (in cyclohexane solutions) of mixtures of TMPD or DMA with HFB. When HFB is used as a solvent for TMPD or DMA, the solutions are visibly yellow. However, with time a reaction occurs as evident by the formation of a black precipitate. The research performed during this contract period follows the lines set out in our original proposal. It was possible to start some of our investigations in the interval between the submission of the proposal and he start of the contract period. However, as in many cases the investigations were continuous and interconnected, no attempt is made in his report to draw a sharp line between work performed before and after January 1, 1967.

Equations relating the maximum internal temperatures of various-shaped fuel forms and other source parameters are given. By using calculated results, the use of cermets is compared with the use of oxide-metal laminar structures as methods of decreasing the resistance to heat flow in the interior of heat sources and achieving higher surface heat fluxes without exceeding maximum allowable internal temperatures. The laminar composite fuel form is moderately superior. The expected vapor phase migration and equilibrium distribution of volatile radioactive fuel inside a heat source capsule is described. Redistribution does not always result in serious problems and can reduce the cost of source fabrication.

This paper reviews the state of the art of corrosion testing of materials by the alkali metals, the models proposed to explain thee observed corrosion results, and the status of materials selection for application in alkali metal-cooled systems. Corrosion of structural and fuel cladding materials by liquid Na and NaK has been studied intensively, but intermittently for the last eighteen years. These studies and the liquid metal cooled reactors in operation demonstrate that stainless steels can be considered for structural and cladding applications below 650°C. Above this temperature increased corrosion and radiation induced embrittlement make them unsatisfactory.
