Technical criteria and bases for a zirconium-tubed K Reactor

The criteria contained in this report have been established to provide the technical bases for the design modifications involved in the K-Reactor tube replacement. The ultimate intent of these criteria is to provide the basic technical data and concepts to assure: technical feasibility and operability of the reactor system as modified; operation of the reactor and its services to minimize nuclear and radiation hazards; and appropriate lifetime of the reactor and its service facilities as modified. The criteria are appropriately broad and may not contain all the data necessary to accomplish detail design. The information contained herein shall serve as a basis for evaluation and approval of all portions of the modification relating to the process as indicated in the above three points.

Production test IP-363-A irradiation of ZR-2 jacketed enriched single tube fuel elements in the KER loops

The objective of this production test is to evaluate the behavior during irradiation of nominally 1.739 inch OD., 1.074 inch ID., Zircaloy-2 jacketed single tube fuel elements with brazed end closures at operating conditions somewhat more severe than those expected for N Reactor fuel element outer tubes. Enriched single tube elements with brazed end closures and modified fuel element supports are authorized for irradiation in the KEG loops to an exposure no higher than 4000 MWD/T. A typical loading and set of operating conditions are given; these may be modified, however, by obtaining appropriate approvals.

Hazards of using tantalum parts in a molten plutonium environment

Tantalum experiences severe intergranular attack (IGA) when in contact with molten plutonium. This IGA of tantalum has produced part failures in crucibles used during Trident and molten salt extraction (MSE) runs and in two stirring rods used in MSE runs. These parts were used at temperatures ranging from 750{degrees}C to 900{degrees}C for a minimum time of 12 hours to a maximum time of 20 hours. 5 refs., 22 figs.

The scope and cost of the Defense Waste Processing Facility have been significantly reduced by adding in-tank sludge processing to the process flowsheet. A demonstration of in-tank processing was recently completed and the achievement of the major goals described in a previous memo. This memo describes the effect of in-tank sludge processing on the radionuclides in the waste. This memo will also identify those areas that will require further work both before and during the next scheduled in-tank sludge processing batch.

Discharge Forecast Modeling project FY87 progress report, October 1, 1986--September 30, 1987

This project originated as a result of the Strontium-90 Action Plan, a response to the abnormal release of radionuclides that occurred from White Oak Creek (WOC) during late November and early December 1985. Several notable problems became obvious during ORNL`s response to this release: (1) no predetermined criteria existed for the operation of White Oak Dam (WOD) in response to spills, (2) the hydrodynamics of contaminant transport and dispersion within the WOC watershed and downstream were not adequately understood to support requests for modified reservoir releases, and (3) real-time data on streamflow, precipitation, and water quality within the watershed were not readily available in sufficient quantity and usable format. The modeling study was initiated to help address these problems. This report describes FY 87 accomplishments, including: improvements in data acquisition and evaluation; implementation and calibration of a model to forecast discharges of water and contaminants from the WOC watershed; implementation, documentation, and checking of a model to forecast concentrations of contaminants from WOC in the Clinch River; and three field studies that provide essential calibration data. Data from the field studies and user documentation of the Clinch River model are included as appendices to this report.

A study of transient particle coarsening. Annual performance report and planned research

Efforts were concentrated on numerically modeling the time-dependent particle coarsening (Ostwald ripening) process. Four models were included: Lifshsitz-Slyozov-Wagner, Brailsford and Wynblatt, Marqusee and Ross, and Marder. The simulations monitored the particle size distribution (PSD) as a function of time; initial PSDs were derived from classical nucleation theory. The ripening kinetics can be represented as a plot of the second moment of normalized PSD vs time. A geometric correction factor is discussed. Future research is planned on Al-Li.

Hydrogen generation during IDMS demonstrations of the Late Washing and Nitric Acid flowsheets

Recently, Late Washing (LW) and Nitric Acid (NA) flowsheets, developed respectively for the DWPF at Savannah River Technology Center SPC and CPC, were demonstrated in the one-fifth scale DWPF pilot facilities, PHEF and IDMS. Using the LW flowsheet, four runs in the PHEF produced enough PHA for two runs in the IDMS (denoted by PX4 and PX5). One of the objectives of these IDMS runs was to obtain peak hydrogen generation rates and compare them to the peak hydrogen generation rate design basis obtained from a previous IDMS run, based on the HAN and Formic Acid (HAN-FA) flowsheets.

Terminological requirements in information management was but one of the principal themes of the 2nd Congress on Terminology and Knowledge Engineering. The traveler represented the American Society for Testing and Materials' Committee on Terminology, of which he is the Chair. The traveler's invited workshop emphasized terminology standardization requirements in databases of material properties as well as practical terminology standardizing methods. The congress included six workshops in addition to approximately 82 lectures and papers from terminologists, artificial intelligence practitioners, and subject specialists from 18 countries. There were approximately 292 registrants from 33 countries who participated in the congress. The congress topics were broad. Examples were the increasing use of International Standards Organization (ISO) Standards in legislated systems such as the USSR Automated Data Bank of Standardized Terminology, the enhanced Physics Training Program based on terminology standardization in Physics in the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia, and the technical concept dictionary being developed at the Japan Electronic Dictionary Research Institute, which is considered to be the key to advanced artificial intelligence applications. Genetic recombination in mammalian cells in culture. Progress report, May 1977--April 1978

Two approaches were made to studies on genetic recombination in Chinese hamster cells: cytogenetics and the synthesis of a hybrid cell line containing two noncomplementing nutritional mutants, presumably in the same cistron, that can be used to detect crossing over to produce nutritional independence. The cytogenetic approach was used to characterize existing mutants and to study new mutants. It is also being used to characterize the parents of the hybrids and the hybrids themselves with a view that prototrophic recombinants selected biochemically will also show recombination cytologically. Preliminary studies of an infrared free-electron laser oscillator at the ATF(BNL)

In this report, I present results of a theoretical 1-D model discussed by G. Dattoli, A. Reniere and myself. The validity of a steady-state analysis is discussed and some estimates are given of the effects introduced by the ''lethargy'' of the laser pulse due to the finite length of the e/sup /minus// pulse. Also, I present analytical expressions for the laser pulse in terms of supermodes (wave-packets of cavity modes), their evolution, physical width as well as the associated frequency spectrum. Next, I present results obtained with a 3-D code for the single pass, small-signal gain. In the appendix, I summarize the symbols used in this report. 2 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

UF/sub 6//sup -/ production from surface reactions of uranium and fluorine

The production of UF/sub 6//sup -/ by reaction of a collimated stream of fluorine gas with a resistively heated uranium wire was studied at temperatures from 870 to 1020/sup 0/C and pressures less than 10/sup -3/ torr. At these temperatures below the uranium melting point, the formation of UF/sub 3/ intermediate on the uranium surface resulted in low UF/sub 6//sup -/ yields. The kinetic energy of the UF/sub 6//sup -/ ion was on the order of thermal energies. The work function of uranium was measured to be 4.20 +- 0.14 eV.

3-D numerical analysis of a high-gain free-electron laser

We present a novel approach to the 3-dimensional high-gain free- electron laser amplifier problem. The method allows us to write the laser field as an integral equation which can be efficiently and accurately evaluated on a small computer. The model is general enough to allow the inclusion of various initial electron beam distributions to study the gain reduction mechanism and its dependence on the physical parameters. 16 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

(Test, calibrate, and prepare a BGO photon detector system)

The traveler spent the year at CERN primarily to test, calibrate, and prepare a BGO photon detector system for use in the August 1990 run of WA80 with sulfur beams and for use in future planned runs with an expanded BGO detector. The BGO was used in test-beam runs in December 1989 and April--May 1990 and in the August data-taking run. The Midrapidity Calorimeters (MIRAC) were also prepared in a new geometry for the August run with a new transverse energy trigger. The traveler also continued to refine and carry out simulations of photon detector systems in present and future planned photon detection experiments. The traveler participated in several WA80 collaboration meetings, which were held at CERN throughout the period of stay. Invited talks were presented at the Workshop on High Resolution Electromagnetic Calorimetry in Stockholm, Sweden, November 9--11, 1989, and at the International Workshop on Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Expert Systems for High-Energy and Nuclear Physics at Lyon, France, March 19--24, 1990. The traveler participated in an experiment to measure particle--particle correlations at 30-MeV/nucleon incident energies at the SARA facility in Grenoble from November 11--24, 1989.
