Determination of the pipe stemming load

A mechanical model for the emplacement pipe system is developed. The model is then employed to determine the force applied to the surface collar of the emplacement pipe, the pipe-stemming load, and the stress along the emplacement pipe as a function of stemming height. These results are presented as integrals and a method for their numerical integration is given.

Single-charge craters excavated during subsurface high-explosive experiments at Big Black Test Site, Mississippi

Single-charge and row-charge subsurface cratering experiments were performed to learn how close-spacing enhances single-crater dimensions. Our first experimental phase established cratering curves for 60-lb charges of the chemical explosive. For the second phase, to be described in a subsequent report, the Row-cratering experiments were designed and executed. This data report contains excavated dimensions and auxiliary data for the single-charge cratering experiments. The dimensions for the row-charge experiments will be in the other report. Significant changes in the soil's water content appeared to cause a variability in the excavated dimensions. This variability clouded the interpretation and application of the cratering curves obtained.

As a result of an explosion in the Waste Treatment Facility, 242-Z Building, 200 West Area of the Hanford Reservation on August 30, 1976, the Manager of the Richland Operations Office (RL), Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), appointed an ERDA Committee to conduct a formal investigation and to prepare a report on their findings of this occurrence. The Committee was instructed to conduct the investigation in accordance with ERDAMC 0502, insofar as circumstances would permit, to cover and explain technical elements of the casual sequence(s) of the occurrence, and to describe management systems which should have or could have prevented the occurrence. This report is the result of the investigation and presents the conclusions of the review.

Double-exposure collector system. Final technical report

A retrofit solar water-heating system has been operating for the past two years in a three-story apartment building at Drexel University. The system employs two conventional collector banks (9 PPG collectors) mounted at the latitude angle for Philadelphia of 40 deg from the horizontal and two double-exposure collectors (DEC's) mounted vertically in mirrored enclosures. The relative performance of the conventional and double-exposure collectors has been monitored with an instrumentation system which was developed and installed in the basement of the apartment building. The DEC units have been found to provide from two to four times as much useful heat output per panel area than the PPG collectors. The higher relative performance values occur on clear winter days whereas lower relative performance values are found on clear summer days and generally overcast days. A cost analysis for a DEC unit relative to a conventional collector has also been performed. In the Philadelphia area the DEC units with their mirror enclosures would cost approximately 1.7 times as much per panel area as conventional collectors. Inertia and friction welding of aluminum alloy 1100 to type 316 stainless steel

The inertia and friction-welding processes were evaluated for joining aluminum alloy 1100-H14 and Type 316 vacuum-induction melted, vacuum-arc remelted (VIM VAR) stainless steel. While both processes consistently produced joints in which the strength exceeded the strength of the aluminum base metal, 100 percent bonding was not reliably achieved with inertia welding. The deficiency points out the need for development of nondestructive testing techniques for this type of joint. Additionally, solid-state volume diffusion did not appear to be a satisfactory explanation for the inertia and friction-welding bonding mechanism.

Genetic recombination in mammalian cells in culture. Progress report, May 1977--April 1978

Two approaches were made to studies on genetic recombination in Chinese hamster cells: cytogenetics and the synthesis of a hybrid cell line containing two noncomplementing nutritional mutants, presumably in the same cistron, that can be used to detect crossing over to produce nutritional independence. The cytogenetic approach was used to characterize existing mutants and to study new mutants. It is also being used to characterize the parents of the hybrids and the hybrids themselves with a view that prototrophic recombinants selected biochemically will also show recombination cytologically. UF/sub 6//sup -/ production from surface reactions of uranium and fluorine

The production of UF/sub 6//sup -/ by reaction of a collimated stream of fluorine gas with a resistively heated uranium wire was studied at temperatures from 870 to 1020/sup 0/C and pressures less than 10/sup -3/ torr. At these temperatures below the uranium melting point, the formation of UF/sub 3/ intermediate on the uranium surface resulted in low UF/sub 6//sup -/ yields. The kinetic energy of the UF/sub 6//sup -/ ion was on the order of thermal energies. The work function of uranium was measured to be 4.20 +- 0.14 eV.

Imperial Valley Environmental Project: progress report

Progress is reported in six areas of research: air quality, water quality, ecosystem quality, subsidence and seismicity, socioeconomic effects, and integrated assessment. A major goal of the air quality element is to evaluate the rate of emission of H/sub 2/S, CO/sub 2/, H/sub 2/, N/sub 2/, CH/sub 4/, and C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ from the operation of the geothermal loop experimental facility at Niland. Concentrations of H/sub 2/S were found to vary between 1500 to 4900 ppM by volume at the Niland facility. To distinguish between geothermal fluids and other waters, extensive sampling networks were established. A major accomplishment was the installation of a high-resolution subsidence-detection network in the Salton Sea geothermal field area, centered on the test facility at Niland. A major effort went into establishing a background of data needed for subsequent impact assessments related to socioeconomic issues raised by geothermal developments. Underway are a set of geothermal energy scenarios that include power development schedules, technology characterizations, and considerations of power-plant-siting criteria. A Gaussian air-pollution model was modified for use in preliminary air-quality assessments. A crop-growth model was developed to evaluate impacts of gases released from geothermal operations on various agricultural crops. Work is also reported on the legal …

Mechanical Properties of Blair Dolomite

Pressure-volume, uniaxial stress loading to failure, uniaxial strain, and acoustic velocity determinations were made on Blair dolomite at confining pressures ranging to 3.5 GPa (Pa = Paschals where 10/sup 5/ Pa = 1 bar or 0.1 GPa = 1 kbar). The bulk modulus K, rapidly rises from an initial 10.4 GPa (at atmospheric pressure) to 102.0 GPa at 1 GPa pressure. At higher pressures, K remains essentially constant (110 GPa). The maximum volume change on loading is 3.9% at 3.5 GPa; the unloading closely follows the loading path. Comparison of uninxial stress tests in compression to 0.7 GPa and extension to 2.1 GPa confining pressure demonstrates that the characteristic shear stress at failure as well as the transition from brittle fracture to ductile flow is strongly dependent upon both the value of the intermediate principal stress sigma /sub 2/ and the rate of strain. The onset of dilatancy as determined in uniaxial compression occurs at about two-thirds of the failure stress. The uniaxial strain loading path is well below the failure envelope in compression. New transient surface-current sensor and recorder

It was demonstrated that a transient surface-current pulse can be sensed and recorded by a graded-Hc film, a magnetic film with the coercive force Hc varying along the length of the film. Information on the magnitude of the current can be obtained by comparing the domain-wall location with the distribution of Hc value along the film. The transient characteristic of the current pulse can be deduced from the V-shaped configuration of the domain wall. (auth)

Design of a /sup 18/F production system at ORNL 86-inch cyclotron

A target system for the production of /sup 18/F by proton bombardment of H/sub 2//sup 18/O was designed for the ORNL 86-inch cyclotron facility. The system consists of concentric titanium and aluminum cylinders. Oxygen-18-enriched H/sub 2/O circulates through the inner titanium cylinder and through an external heat exchanger with cooling water flowing in the annulus. Yields of 5.0 curies are expected for a 250-..mu..A proton beam current and 24-min irradiation time.

Mass spectrometric analytical services and research activities to support coal-liquid characterization research. Quarterly report, June 9, 1976--October 5, 1976. [10 refs]

Low-resolution field ionization and high-resolution 70-eV electron-impact mass spectra data were obtained for 28 GPC fractions acquired from Bartlett, Kansas, heavy petroleum by members of the Separation and Characterization group at the Bartlesville Energy Research Center. This group was supplied with most-probable empirical formulas deduced from the high resolution electron-impact data. Analysis of the qualitative and quantitative analytical data previously obtained for GPC fractions from a Synthoil sample by high- and low-resolution field-ionization and high-resolution 70-eV electron-impact mass spectrometry is essentially complete. A study of field-ionization sensitivities for saturates and mixtures of saturates and aromatics is in progress. Components required to modify the combined FI/EI ion source to permit operation in the field desorption mode have been ordered.
