A Flight Investigation of the Ice-Prevention Requirements of the United States Naval K-Type Airship

Report discussing a research program to investigate ice prevention and elimination on airships in order to develop suitable airship ice-prevention equipment. A Naval K-type airship was equipped with photographic and meteorological tools in order to record ice formation and the propellers were outfitted with electrically heated blade shoes. Testing discovered that an airship can be flown successfully in wet snow and freezing rain with only the propellers and induction systems protected from the weather.

Summary report on the high-speed characteristics of six model wings having NACA 65(sub1)-series sections (open access)

Summary report on the high-speed characteristics of six model wings having NACA 65(sub1)-series sections

A summary of the results of wind-tunnel tests to determine the high-speed aerodynamic characteristics of six model wings having NACA 65sub1-series sections is presented in this report. The 8-percent-thick wings were superior to the 10-percent and 12-percent-thick wings from the standpoint of power economy during level flight for Mach numbers above 0.76. However, airplanes that are to fly at Mach numbers below 0.76 will gain aerodynamically if the percentage thickness of the wing and the aspect ratio are both increased. The lift-curve slopes for the 8-percent-thick wings at 0.85 Mach number were roughly twice their low-speed values.

Range of U235 Fission Fragments in Photographic Emulsion

From abstract: "A fine-grain emulsion has been found which is sensitive only to the densely ionizing fission fragments. This emulsion was soaked in uranyl acetate and exposed to slow neutrons. The ranges in the emulsion of about four-hundred fission fragments were measured. The resulting distribution shows a sharp maximum at 23 microns of emulsion. No ternary fissions or large-angle scattering of fragments were observed."

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/8-Scale Powered Model of a High-Speed Bomber With a Dual Pusher Propeller Aft of the Empennage

Report presenting wind-tunnel tests made to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a scale model of a high-speed bomber with a dual pusher propeller aft of the empennage. Some of the results discussed include longitudinal, lateral, and directional stability and control, the empennage design, and ground effects on the aerodynamic characteristics. The results indicate that this particular airplane has several advantages with regard to stability and control over the conventional-type single-engine airplane configuration.

Recovery of D2O and UO2F2 by Distillation

Technical report describing the purification and separation by distillation of UO2F2 from D2O. In the experiment which is discussed 2,129.6 lbs of UO2F2 were dissolved in 6,605 lbs of D2O. The average isotopic purity of the D2O decreased during the distillation from 99.77% to 99.73%. The dissolved impurities were less than those present originally in the heavy water.

Comparison of several methods of predicting the pressure loss at altitude across a baffled aircraft-engine cylinder (open access)

Comparison of several methods of predicting the pressure loss at altitude across a baffled aircraft-engine cylinder

Several methods of predicting the compressible-flow pressure loss across a baffled aircraft-engine cylinder were analytically related and were experimentally investigated on a typical air-cooled aircraft-engine cylinder. Tests with and without heat transfer covered a wide range of cooling-air flows and simulated altitudes from sea level to 40,000 feet. Both the analysis and the test results showed that the method based on the density determined by the static pressure and the stagnation temperature at the baffle exit gave results comparable with those obtained from methods derived by one-dimensional-flow theory. The method based on a characteristic Mach number, although related analytically to one-dimensional-flow theory, was found impractical in the present tests because of the difficulty encountered in defining the proper characteristic state of the cooling air. Accurate predictions of altitude pressure loss can apparently be made by these methods, provided that they are based on the results of sea-level tests with heat transfer.

Consolidation and shaping of boron ; summary of previous work

From abstract: "The deposit on the rods is in the form of a brittle uneven tube which is cracked off and subsequently pulverized to a 200-mesh powder. Precipitation of Thorium Oxalate from Nitric Acid Solutions (open access)

Precipitation of Thorium Oxalate from Nitric Acid Solutions

Introduction. It has been known for a long time that thorium is precipitated by oxalic acid in acid solutions, but a survey of the literature showed no study of the limits of the acidity and oxalic acid excess which yield quantitative results. V. I. Spitzin reports on the solubility of thorium oxalate in varying concentrations of several acids, but the effect of an excess oxalic acid is not included. Since solutions are sometimes presented for analysis that contain more than the recommended two per cent mineral acid, it would be advantageous to be able to quantitatively remove the thorium without otherwise altering the solutions. This was especially of interest in solutions containing bismuth, since it was hoped that some amounts of thorium could be precipitated in nitric acid solutions containing large quantities of bismuth. In removing the bismuth, first by a bismuth oxychloride precipitation, thee is every opportunity for carrying of the thorium.
