Chemical Technology Division Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, June 1958

The interfacial area in a pulse column was measured using an alpha ,n reaction. Externally mixing atomizing nozzles were tried unsuccessfully in the DRUHM reactor. A Fluorox run gave a UF/sub 6/ recovery of 72.9% of the theoretical yield and rate constants of 18.6 hr/sup -1/ and 32.9 hr/sup -1/. Satisfactory operation of a flame calcination apparatus was demonstrated with methyl alcohol feed slurries of thorium oxalate, with ethylorthosilicate treated ThO/sub 2/, and with 650 tained C fired ThC/sub 2/. Thorium dioxide was efficiently collected from circulating slurries using a hydroclone and an induced underflow receiver. Tests show that classification of thorium dioxide with hydroclones is practical. The Darex equipment is being modified to provide automatic adjustment of recycle acid streams. Two Zircex hydrochlorination runs were made with HCl utilization of 55%, uranium tosses to the sublimate of 0.057% and 5.1% insoluble losses. Methods for disassembling SRE Core 1 fuel elements were explored. Rench scale equipment to test a flowsheet for the reprocessing of irradiated PWR blanket fuel elements has been installed in cell 2 of building 4507 and tested for leak and operability. Tests on radiation damage of protective coatings and glass-lined equipment were continued. Experiments have demonstrated that …

[Chemistry Thesis] Part 1: The Spectra of Some Aliphatic Aldehydes and Their Monodeutero Derivatives, (open access)

[Chemistry Thesis] Part 1: The Spectra of Some Aliphatic Aldehydes and Their Monodeutero Derivatives,

BS>An investigation of the infrared and near-ultraviolet spectra of three aliphatic aldchydes and their monodeutero derivatives is described. The infrared spectra of the acetaldehydes (CH/sub 3/CHO and CH/sub 3/CDO) were in agreement with work reported recently. A few new bands are reported and discussed. The infrared spectra of C/sub 2/H/sub 5/CHO, C/sub 2/H/sub 5/CDO, C/ sub 3/H/sub 7/CHO, and C/sub 3/H/sub 7/CDO at 450 to 4000 cm/sup -1/ were observed, and an assignment of the observed bands was made. The weak absorption of the aliphatic aldehydes which extends from lambda 3500 A to lambda 2300 A was investigated. The strength of the absorption (f-value) is decreased by deuterium substitution at the aldehyde CHO group. The decrease in the f-value can be accounted for by the theory of vibrationally induced electronic transitions. The effect of isotopic substitution on the intensity of symmetry- allowed as well as synnmetryforbidden (vibrationally allowed) electronic transitions in polyatomic molecules is discussed. (auth)

COATING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE POWDERS WITH METALLIC TUNGSTEN FILMS

Conditions for the turegsten coating of uranium dioxide powders by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexachloride in a fluidized bed of the powder product have been established. The coated material should contain approxi-mately 20 wt.% tungsten in order to obtain essentially complete coverage of micron-size urailum dioxide. (auth)

Critical Experiments With Arrays of Orr and Bsr Fuel Elements (open access)

Critical Experiments With Arrays of Orr and Bsr Fuel Elements

Critical experiments were performed with ORR and BSR fuel elements to determine safe arrays in which the elements could be handled and stored. The data indicate that the optimum spacing for criticality of 168-g ORR elements in water is 0.2 in. between locating bosses annd that an infinite array of vertically placed elements onc element high would probably be subcritical with a 1 1/2-in. spacing between locating bosses. For uniform arrays of adjacent elements in water, variation in thc fuel loading per element between 140 and 200 g made very little difference in the critical mass. When 132 elements with sn average loading of 160 g per element were closely packed in water in an 11 by 12 element array in which the rows were separated with 20-mil-thick cadmium sheets, no appreciable source neutron multiplication was observed; nor was there any appreciable multiplication when both the cadmium sheets and the water moderator were removed annd the array was surrounded with a 12-in.-thick paraffin reflector. A two-row slab-shaped array with 24 200-g center elements and 14 168-g ele ments on each end, all spaced 0.2 in. between locating bosses, was subcritical, and it appears that two infinitely long rows of 168-g …
