Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant, Monroe, Michigan, September 1970
The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS) was used to survey the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant and surrounding area during Sept. 1970. The survey measured terrestrial background gamma radiation and included a plume track of the stack release gases. A high-sensitivity detection system collected gamma spectral and gross-count data. The data were then computer processed into a map of a 277 sq. mile area showing isoexposure contours 3 ft above ground. Results indicated the presence of isotopes normally found in the background radiation throughout the United States. The plume track revealed no radiation above backgrouad levels. (auth)

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, Monticello, Minnesota, August 1970
The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS) was used to survey the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant and surrounding area during Aug. 1970. The survey measured terrestrial background gamma radiation. A high-sensitivity detection system collected gamma spectral and gross-count data. The data were then computer processed into a map of a 625 sq. mile area showing isoexposure contours 3 ft above the ground. Results indicated the presence of isotopes normally found in the background radiation throughout the United States. (auth)

Anticipated effects of an unlined brackish-water canal on a confined multiple-aquifer system
The major source of fresh water at Southport, North Carolina, is a confined multiple-aquifer groundwater system that can be affected in several ways by the proposed unlined cooling-water canal for the Brunswick nuclear power plant. The canal will route brackish water three miles from the Cape Fear Estuary to the plant condensers. The heated brackish effluent will then be routed six miles from discharge to the Ataantic Ocean. To evaluate the impact of the canal on the groundwater system, a mathematical model was used to describe steady-state responses resulting from a variety of conceivable hydrologic stresses. Numerical solutions were obtained by means of finite-difference approximations and a successive line overrelaxation solution technique. The model apprdximated three- dimensional saturated flow in aquifers of variable thickness by assuming two- dimensional flow in each aquifer with interaquifer transfer throughout the groundwater system. Simulation results indicated that saatwater from the estuary will eventually intrude upon Southport's municipal wells regardless of the presence of the proposed Brunswick canal. The canal system will not significantly decrease the time required for estuarine saltwater contamination of the wells. A major portion of the brackish water that downwells from the discharge canal appears to upwell in a parallel drainage …

Argonne Radiological Impact Program (ARIP). Part I. Carcinogenic hazard from low-level, low-rate radiation
The entire Argonne Radiological Impact Program is briefly outlined, and part of the program dealing with radiation hazards from nuclear power plants is discussed in detail. Various models and predictions of carcinogenic hazard are examined and compared with actual experience in U. S. and foreign populations. All of the models predict a significant increment in malignant mortality with increasing background. Observation of the actual populations at risk shows not only no increment, but an actual decrement, so that these predictions are left quite without observational support. It is concluded that extrapolation of high- rate and usually hlgh dose-level studies to low rates and low levels is probably invalid, and that radiation at such levels and rates does not constitute an environmental carcinogen of significance.
