Triode cathodic vacuum etcher for the low-voltage polishing and etching of metallographic specimens (open access)

Triode cathodic vacuum etcher for the low-voltage polishing and etching of metallographic specimens

From international metallography society symposium on specimen preparation for metallography; Los Angeles. California, USA (23 Sep 1973). A triode cathodic vacuum etcher has been developed that has a number of advantages over conventional diode etchers. The triode etcher can be operated at specimen voltages well below 1000 V(dc) to minimize mount deterioration and the danger of arcing to the etched surface. Etching voltage and current density can be independently varied so that high current densities can be used with low voltages to provide rapid etching rates while minimizing heating of the specimen. Also. redeposition of sputtered material on the etched surface is reduced because of the low operating pressure (<3 millitorr) of the triode system. At very low voltages (75 to 125 V(dc)) the etching rate is relatively insensitive to crystalline orientation and a polishing action is obtained. This permits the removal of deformed surface layers and even such gross surface defects as the scratches from 600-grit paper without producing significant surface relief. This ion polishing capability has been used to reveal the pore structure of UO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/-PuO/sub -specimens by removing surface flow material without enlarging the pores. Text, Figures, and Examples for the Refresher Course ''Practical Statistics for the Health Physicist''

From eighteenth Health Physics Society meeting; Miami Beach, Florida, USA (17 Jun 1973). A refresher course to provide a practical approach to the use of statistical concepts in interpreting data related to problems of applied health physics is given. After a brief review of the theoretical probability distributions, emphasis is placed on counting statistics, in particular the concept of the standard deviation. In this category the following topics are covered: (1) calculation of the standard deviation, (2) propagation of errors (when two or more quantities are combined arithmetically or via a formula), (3) confidence limits, and (4) the null hypothesis. The following topics are also discussed. (1) Chi-Square in relation to checking the reliability of a counting instrument, (2) correction factors for deadtime losses, and (3) for the case of a decaying source. (auth)

Structure and elevated temperature properties of ferritic alloys strengthened by intermetallic compounds (open access)

Structure and elevated temperature properties of ferritic alloys strengthened by intermetallic compounds

Thesis. An investigation was conducted to develop high-temperature 1Ta-- 6Cr, 1Ta--7Cr, and 1Ta-7Cr--0.5 Mo alloys using a dispersion of the Laves phase in a noncarbon-containing, body-centeredcubic iron matrix. An understanding and application of basic principles of materials science and the use of large amounts of information available in the literature were instrumental in the development of Fe-- Ta-- Cr alloys of the investigation. The phase transformations that occurred in the alloys, and the resulting microstructures were studied. The relations between mechanical properties and structure were also examined. Short- time tensile mechanical properties and long-time creep and stress-rupture tests were conducted on the alloys in which microstructural features were varied by changes in the heat-treating procedure. The mechanical properties were compared with those of several commercially available steels. An examination of substructure and precipitate distribution of the alloys before and after creep tests, the determination of apparent activation energy for creep, and an estimation of the stress sensitivity of steady-state creep rates were carried out in order to investigate the mechanism of creep in dispersion-hardened ferritic alloys. Fracture surface morphology was examined after specimens were tested in short-time tension and in creep. (JRD)

Environmental status of the Hanford Reservation for CY-1972

Data are summarized on radioactivity in environmental samples collected during 1972 within the Hanford plant boundaries, but excluding areas under the control of individual contractors. Some data are included on samples collected off-site. Data are included on the content of /sup 90/Sr, tritium, and total alpha radioactivity in samples of Columbia River water, surface waters, and drinking water collected at various locations; the content of /sup 131/I and gross alpha and BETA radioactivity in air samples collected both on-site and off-site; the content of /sup 239/Pu in samples of soil and vegetation; and the conlent of /sup 137/Cs, /sup 90/Sr, /sup 65/Zn, and /sup 239/Pu in tissue sampl es of migratory waterfowl, native birds, deer, and other wild mammals. Aerial surveys of gamma radioactivity were conducted at an altitude of 500 ft twice durirg 1972 and no unusual radioactivity was detected. Active, inactive, and retired radioactive waste burial sites were inspected for general physical condition and evidence of disturbance. (CH)

Quantitative sequential imaging of radionuclide distribution using the whole-body scanner and the gamma camera: absolute accuracy and aspects of three-dimensional reconstruction (open access)

Quantitative sequential imaging of radionuclide distribution using the whole-body scanner and the gamma camera: absolute accuracy and aspects of three-dimensional reconstruction

From eleventh international annual meeting of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine; Athens, Greece (24 Sep 1973). Progress in quantitating the distribution of isotope within organs on sequential images of the whole body using the whole-body scanner, and on techniques of reconstructing the three- dimensional distribution from multiple gamma-camera views using a variety of different algorithms is reported. The following variables are involved in the precise quantitation of the amount of radiopharmaceuticals in regions of the body: geometry effect, patient thickness, thickness and homogeneity of isotope distribution, source position, one photon attenuation coefficient. The whole- body scanner used consists of 64 detectors distributed as four rows of 16 detectors with a diagonal offset to give good resolution and adequate collimation between the single 3.2-cm diameter by 3.8-cm thick sodium iodide (TI) crystals. The patient is positioned on a bed that is moved over the detector array and pulse-height selection is used to separate pulses between different isotopes. The scan durations can vary from 0.75 minute to hours. (auth)

Rubidium-81 used as a myocardium imaging agent (open access)

Rubidium-81 used as a myocardium imaging agent

From 11th international annual meeting of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine; Athens, Greece (24 Sep 1973). Rubidium-81 is a new myocardial imaging agent with an ideal T/sub 1/2 of 4.6 hr and energies acceptable for gamma-camera viewing. The target-to-nontarget ratio for heart image to background in the projection images is usually less than 2: 1, thus good statistics are necessary to delineate lesions. The low radiation dose and availability of this isotope allow one to obtain 6 to 10 times the data, and /sup 81/Rb is probably superior to /sup 129/Cs and /sup 43/K for myoca rdial imaging if adequate collimation is present. Environmental measurements and monitoring programs around reactors: pre- operational, operational, and for accidents (open access)

Environmental measurements and monitoring programs around reactors: pre- operational, operational, and for accidents

A general overview is given of the requirements for environmental monitoring programs around nuclear power reactors. The emphasis is on radiological measurements in three types of environmental measurement situations: pre-operational; operational; and during accidents and accidental releases. The goals of the various programs are outlined, along with the relevant regulations. Discussions of the sampling part of each program are included, along with some comments on the choice, deployment, and use of instrumentation. Other sources must be consulted for detailed discussions of instruments and analytical techniques. The goal is to give some insight into the complexities of environmental monitoring programs. The difficulties involved in establishing a viable program should not be thought of as insurmountable: on the contrary, many skilled personnel are easily capable of carrying out these aampling and measuring programs, including the occurrence of unexpected demands from time to time. Salt waste volume reduction by sodium removal (open access)

Salt waste volume reduction by sodium removal

A literature searcha nd preliminary experiments were carried out to determine the feasibility of reducing salt waste volumes by the removal of sodium and purifying the sodium as metal for reuse or less restricted storage for use in the long-term storage of Hanford's radioactive salt waste. Included in the experimental part of the study were oxalate precipitation of sodium, preparation of chloride feed for ecletrolysis, denitration experiments, carbon reduction of sodium-cesium compounds, and distillation of sodium metal for decontamination. Eaeh of these steps was found tn be feasible, but mans problems exist. The most favorable process probable includes: evaporation and denitratipn (possibly preceded be a scavenging precipitatioal, reduction with carbon and distillation or sodium metal from the reaction mixture at low pressures, and purification of sodium metal be filtration and distillaton. At alternative to the first step might be oxalate precipitaton of the sodium. Considerable development work remains before at integrated process could be demonstrated. (auth)

Positron lifetime measurements as a non-destructive technique to monitor fatigue damage. Progress report (open access)

Positron lifetime measurements as a non-destructive technique to monitor fatigue damage. Progress report

The critical parts (electronics in the base of the photomultipliers) of the electronics have been brought under temperature control of within plus or minus 0.1 deg C thus minimizing drift problems. In data analysis a computer program is functioning in which there are no fixed experimental parameters. This permits much more accurate results. Samples of pure Ni and a Ni-66.5% Co alloy have been fatigued to failure. Positron lifetime and x-ray particle size were measured at various fatigue lives and transmission electron microscopy was performed after failure. Good correlation was found between the three techniques and it appears that positron lifetime can be used as an effective tool to study fatigue mechanisms. It is a more sensitive nondestructive measurement than is x- ray particle size. It has been established that grain boundaries make a distinct contribution to the positron lifetime. Positron lifetime increases with plastic tensile strain in a manner dependent on initial grain size and in a manner consistent with existing work hardening theories. There are indications that the positron lifetime may be sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement or hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) in steels. Experiments to study lifetime changes during cyclic softening and cyclic hardening of ArSI 4340 steel …
