From introduction: This report is limited to the presentation and discussion of chemical, physical, and bacteriological data collected within Tulpehocken Creek basin before April 1975.

Purpose and scope: This report is intended to identify many of the causes of saline-water intrusion into freshwater aquifers in Lee County, and to describe some of the effects of the intrusion on ground-water quality. Particular emphasis is placed on saline-water intrusion as related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of wells drilled primarily for water-supply, and to the plugging of wells that are no longer used.

This guide explains how to operate a watershed model designed to help better control urban floods. It contains tables and charts.

Abstract: Laguna La Torrecilla, Laguna de Pinones, Laguna San Jose, and Laguna del Condado, in the San Juan, Puerto Rico area, are located within a metropolitan area of more than 1 million people. Bathymetric maps made during the study, in 1973, showed that Lagunas La Torrecilla, San Jose, and del Condado have been modified by dredging and filling; whereas, Laguna de Pinones has remained in a near natural state. Laguna La Torrecilla has been dredged to a depth, in places, of about 18 metres, and Lagunas San Jose and del Condado, in places to about 11 meters. Dredging in the San Juan lagoons has been harmful, beneficial, and in a few instances has had little or no noticeable effect on the water quality. Usually, dredging in the connecting canals has been beneficial if the water entering the lagoons through the canals was of better quality than the water in the lagoon. Dredging in the mouths of lagoons has been beneficial; whereas, filling or blocking the mouths has been harmful.

From introduction: The specific purpose of the digital model study was to develop a better understanding of the aquifer system and to show how it responds to various pumping stresses. The scope of the study was to develop a single-transmissive-layer model that could be used to evaluate the effects proposed ground-water development schemes would have on water levels.

From introduction: This report presents an estimating technique that could be employed, with certain adaptations, almost anywhere that high ground-water levels in sedimentary deposits may present construction planning problems such as design and safe use of septic tank drain fields, and design of foundations, basements, and roadways.

Abstract: Subsidence in the Baytown area is becoming critical because much of the area is subject to inundation by high tides. Withdrawals of water from industrial wells and declines in artesian pressures began about 1918. As much as 280 feet (85.3 meters) of artesian-head decline has occurred in the Evangeline aquifer, and as much as 320 feet (97.5 meters) of decline has occurred in the Alta Lorna Sand. Subsidence of the land surface began about 1920, and as much as 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) of subsidence had occurred by 1973. Future subsidence was calculated for two loading situations. Case I provided that the artesian heads in the Alta Lorna Sand and Evangeline aquifer would continue to decline at a rate of 6 feet (1.8 meters) per year until 1980. Case II provided that artesian head in the Alta Lorna Sand and Evangeline aquifer would continue to decline at a rate of about 6 feet (1.8 meters) per year until about 1995. The ultimate subsidence expected for the assumed conditions of case I and case II is 11.4 feet (3.47 meters) and 15.1 feet (4.60 meters), respectively.

From abstract: From parts of the area, water for domestic use obtained from the fractured crystalline-rock aquifer contained excessive concentration of dissolved fluoride, dissolved nitrite plus nitrate, dissolved solids, dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, dissolved zinc, coliform bacteria, gross alpha radiation, and gross beta radiation. Based on water-quality analyses from 26 wells located in small urbanized areas, water from 21 of the wells contained excessive concentrations of one of more constituents.

From Purpose and Scope: The objectives of this study are: (1) to define, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the clogging processes associated with injection, and (2) to determine the three-dimensional migration paths of injection water and native ground water.

From abstract: Planning waste-disposal facilities and impoundments is complicated by karst carbonate terrane in the Ozarks. Thermal imagery (8-13 micrometer wavelength) and color infrared photography aid in identifying losing streams, sinkholes and hydrologic conditions encouraging collapse. Imagery and photography were acquired in Greene and Reynold Counties, Mo., in March 1972 and June 1973. Differences in thermal levels correlating with losing and gaining reaches of Logan Creek valley, Reynolds County, were not visually apparent in predawn March imagery but statistical analysis of predawn magnetic-tape data indicated greater variance in emitted energy from the losing reach than from the gaining reach.

From introduction: This report presents some borehole data-collection methods that can be used during the drilling of ROMP or other wells where data collection is a prime objective. Hydraulic, water-quality, and geophysical data-collection methods applicable to the hydrogeology of west-central Florida are emphasized.

From abstract: "This study was made to describe the distribution of inorganic nitrogen and other chemical constituents and nitrogen-using bacteria in the unsaturated zone, to relate nitrogen occurrences, in a general way, to present and historical land use, and to attempt to predict nitrogen concentrations in ground water after recharge" within the Highland-East Highlands area of San Bernardino County, California. It includes maps, graphs, and tables.

Report and Geographical Survey. Report uses a streamflow-routing model to simulate the daily flow at Park Falls over the next ten years and includes several illustrations and tables.

Purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to describe and make preliminary interpretations of: (1) Limnological characteristics of Williams Lake, based on physical, chemical, and biological data collected in 6 days in 6 different months in 1979; (2) chemical quality of ground water near the lake, based on samples collected during the summer of 1979; and (3) mineralogy of the lake sediment cores obtained in February 1978. The period of study extended from March, when the lake was covered by ice, through the period of open water, to December, when it was again covered by ice.

From purpose and scope: Purposes of this report are: (1) To define the areal distribution and occurrence of all thermal springs in the Boise River basin, (2) to evaluate their chemical and isotopic compositions, and (3) to quantify the amount of heat and water presently discharging from the springs.

Abstract:Data were collected and summarized on the hydrology and hydrogeology of 949 lakes, 10 acres (4 hectares) or larger, in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, Minnesota. Eight tables totaling over 100 pages present data on location, depth, area, lake level, ecological and game-management classification, inflowing and outflowing streams, soils, bedrock type, water added to or take from lake, and reported lake-related problems. SYSTEM 2000, a generalized computer data-base management system, was used to organize the data and prepare the tables. SYSTEM 2000 provides powerful capabilities for future retrieval and analyses of the data. The data base is available to potential users so that questions not implicitly anticipated in the preparation of the published tables can be answered readily, and the user can retrieve data in tabular or other forms to meet his particular needs.

From purpose and scope: This report provides basic information on the ground-water resources of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which is an area of about 760 square miles (1970 meters) in southeastern Pennsylvania. It discusses the availability and quality of the water in the water-bearing units in the county and the relation of the ground water to surface water.

Abstract: WATEQF is a FORTRAN IV computer program that models the thermodynamic speciation of inorganic ions and complex species in solution for a given water analysis. The original version (WATEQ) was written in 1973 by A. H. Truesdell and B. F. Jones in Programming Language/one (PL/1). With but a few exceptions, the thermochemical data, speciation, activity coefficients, and general calculation procedure of WATEQF is identical to the PL/1 version. This report notes the differences between WATEQF and WATEQ, demonstrates how to set up the input data to execute WATEQF, provides a test case for comparison, and makes available a listing of WATEQF.
