An Investigation of 0.15-Chord Ailerons on a Low-Drag Tapered Wing at High Speeds (open access)

An Investigation of 0.15-Chord Ailerons on a Low-Drag Tapered Wing at High Speeds

Report presenting testing of 0.15-wing-chord, internally balanced ailerons on a low-drag tapered wing at Mach numbers up to 0.75. Both a normal-profile and beveled trailing-edge aileron were tested without a seal and with a partial seal. Results regarding variation of lift, static characteristics of the ailerons, aileron control characteristics, pitching moment induced by ailerons, balance pressures, and pressure distributions are provided.

Effect of Fuel Volatility on Performance of a Wright R-2600-8 Engine as Influenced by Mixture Distribution (open access)

Effect of Fuel Volatility on Performance of a Wright R-2600-8 Engine as Influenced by Mixture Distribution

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effect of fuel volatility on engine power and economy as influenced by mixture distribution. Tests of four fuels of different volatility were conducted on a Wright R-2600-8 engine at desired cruising power, maximum cruising power, normal rated power, and takeoff power.

Trends in Surface-Ignition Temperatures (open access)

Trends in Surface-Ignition Temperatures

Report discusses the variation of surface-ignition temperature with charge density, fuel-air ratio, and surface-ignition advance. Tests on several fuels were conducted on a supercharged CFR engine to determine surface-ignition temperature as a function of the three variables. It was concluded that surface-ignition temperature is not a satisfactory criterion for differentiating between preignition characteristics of different fuels.

Early Detection of Cracks Resulting From Fatigue Stressing (open access)

Early Detection of Cracks Resulting From Fatigue Stressing

Report discusses an apparatus that may be used for indicating the formation of fatigue cracks or for following the progress of cracks. Details of the experiment and discussion of the way in which the deflection-crack area relationship may be used to monitor fatigue cracks are included.

Critical Speeds and Profile Drag of the Inboard Sections of a Conventional Propeller (open access)

Critical Speeds and Profile Drag of the Inboard Sections of a Conventional Propeller

Report presenting the section critical speeds and profile drags of the shank and hub sections of a propeller used on a current liquid-cooled-engine pursuit type of airplane. Results indicated that serious adverse compressibility effects can be expected at speeds of about 400 miles per hour. Suitable fairings for shank and hub sections were found to be necessary for maximum propulsive efficiency.

The Effect of Xylidines on the Load-Carrying Capacity of an Aircraft Engine Oil - 2 (open access)

The Effect of Xylidines on the Load-Carrying Capacity of an Aircraft Engine Oil - 2

Report presenting testing of the effect of xylidines on the load-carrying capacity of an aircraft-engine oil in several test devices. There is also interest in the suitability of xylidines as an antiknock component in aviation gasoline, so xylidines were added to the gasoline mixes used in several different machines.

Effect of Aromatics and Spark Advance on Thermal Efficiency (open access)

Effect of Aromatics and Spark Advance on Thermal Efficiency

Report presenting an analysis of experimental and theoretical data, which indicates that critical evaluation of fuel performance, especially economy, must be made in the engine. Data show that heating value is, from the aspect of fuel economy, not so important an aviation-fuel specification as believed. The knock ratings of fuels are affected by spark advance.

The Effect of Angle of Bend Between Plate Elements on the Local Instability of Formed Z-Sections (open access)

The Effect of Angle of Bend Between Plate Elements on the Local Instability of Formed Z-Sections

"Thirty-nine Z-sections formed from 24S-T aluminum-alloy sheet with the angle of bend between the flanges and the web varying from 5 degrees to 120 degrees were tested as columns. Angles of bend from 30 degrees to 120 degrees had little or no effect on the critical stress or on the average stress at maximum load for local instability of the columns. The lengths of the columns were such that at angles of bend below 30 degrees they failed by Euler buckling" (p. 1).

Foaming of Aircraft-Engine Oils as a Problem in Colloid Chemistry - 1 (open access)

Foaming of Aircraft-Engine Oils as a Problem in Colloid Chemistry - 1

Report presenting an investigation conducted on the foaming characteristics of representative aircraft-engine lubricants in order to arrive at an adequate theory of the foaming of such oils. Methods of measuring foaming are compared and analyzed for their significant factors.

Wind-tunnel tests of single- and dual-rotating tractor propellers of large blade width (open access)

Wind-tunnel tests of single- and dual-rotating tractor propellers of large blade width

Report presenting tests of 10-foot diameter, single- and dual-rotating tractor propellers with two to eight blades conducted in the 20-foot propeller-research tunnel. The blades were 50 percent wider than those used in previous investigations. Results regarding the effect of dual rotation and effect of solidity are provided.

Representative Operating Charts of Propellers Tested in the NACA 20-Foot Propeller-Research Tunnel

Report presents the results of tests of full-scale propellers made in the 20-foot propeller-research tunnel (PRT) at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. The power coefficients of all dual-rotating propellers in the report represent the sum of the power coefficients of the front and rear propellers and are for the test conditions in which blade angles of the front and rear propellers were set to absorb approximately equal power at peak efficiency only.
