[Letter from Ashley Carswell to T. N. Carswell - September 13, 1944]

A letter written to Uncle Norwood [T. N. Carswell] from Ashley [Ashley Carswell], Tucson, Arizona, dated September 13, 1944. Ashley Carswell advises that he has completed training and is ready to go overseas. He has a nine-day delay with his crew to pick up a new ship and equipment in Topeka, Kansas, drive to Dallas then fly to Jacksonville to be home four or five days. He assures his Uncle that he is "not worried about going across because I've got the best crew on the field―but I am the only Rebel."

Mesa 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Arizona: Data Report (Abbreviated) (open access)

Mesa 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Arizona: Data Report (Abbreviated)

From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream/surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Mesa 1 x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 713 sites, at a target sampling density of one site per 13 square kilometers (five square miles). Ground water samples were collected at 365 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water. Mass spectrometry results are given for helium in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.

Study of the temporal and spatial variation of climate and solar radiation in the metropolitan Phoenix area. Final technical progress report, July 1, 1977-June 30, 1978 (open access)

Study of the temporal and spatial variation of climate and solar radiation in the metropolitan Phoenix area. Final technical progress report, July 1, 1977-June 30, 1978

The research performed was designed to identify spatial or temporal variation of any atmospheric parameters that might affect the operation of devices utilizing solar energy in the metropolitan Phoenix area. The first part of the research involved the analysis of all available solar and climatic data to determine their validity and comparability. For the standard climatic parameters, few difficulties were encountered, but the task of determining comparability of solar radiation data involved many pitfalls. It was concluded that most of the solar data acquired before January 1977 could not be used for purposes of identifying spatial variability. And, a year and a half of data does not represent a long enough period of time upon which to base sound conclusions about spatial and temporal variability of solar radiation in the metropolitan Phoenix region. The data currently available to us do not indicate any great variation of solar radiation in the metropolitan Phoenix area. However, any meaningful statements about spatial and temporal variability of solar radiation in the metropolitan Phoenix area must await the acquisition of additional data from well-calibrated equipment.

Authority of State and Local Police to Enforce Federal Immigration Law

This report discusses the authority of state and local law enforcement to assist in the enforcement of federal immigration law through the investigation and arrest of persons believed to have violated such laws. It describes current provisions in federal law that permit state and local police to enforce immigration law directly; analyzes major cases concerning the ability of states and localities to assist in immigration enforcement, including the Supreme Court's ruling in Arizona v. United States; and briefly examines opinions on the issue by the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) within the Department of Justice. This report does not discuss legal issues raised by state and local measures intended to supplement federal immigration laws through the imposition of additional criminal or civil penalties.
