Interview with Ramon Ruiz, a civil servant of the Department of Education and advocate for Hispanic education from La Copita, Texas. Ruiz discusses his family history, growing up, school in Kingsville, local relations between Mexicans and white people, high school football, playing for North Texas State, becoming a coach for elementary school, joining the Job Corps, teaching inmates, working with school districts on desegregation in Texas, and work on various federal education programs in Washington with an emphasis on Hispanic communities and cooperation with Mexico. In appendix is a biography of Ruiz and his resumé.

Interview with Robert Hoe, a Navy WWII veteran of the China-Burma-India theater from Le Roy, New York. Hoe discusses growing up, the reaction to Pearl Harbor, attending college, enlisting in the Navy, training and becoming an officer, joining the Navy Scouts and Raiders, deployment to China and assignment to the Sino-American Cooperative Organization, supplying their forces, operations with guerilla fighters against the Japanese occupation, intelligence gathering, his reaction to the atomic bomb, the end of the war, service in China and discharge, and life as a civilian.

Interview with Major General Frederick Haynes, a Marine WWII veteran from Dallas, Texas. Haynes discusses growing up, becoming an officer in the Marine Corps, being a small arms instructor, assignment to the 28th Marines and training for combat, various experiences fighting the Battle of Iwo Jima, and reflections on battle.

Interview with Robert Seidel, a Army Air Force WWII veteran from Elkhart, Indiana, who served in the 763rd Bomb Squadron in the European Theater. Accompanied by his wife Helen, Seidel discusses his family, the start of the war and joining the Air Corps, training as a flight engineer, assignment to the B-24 and deployment to Spinazzola, Italy, flying combat missions, life at the base, ditching his aircraft near Salzburg and getting captured, being interrogated, internment at Stalag Luft IV, liberation, and returning to the US. In appendix are three photos of Seidel, his B-24 crew, and their aircraft, Seidel's papers from when he was a German prisoner, his POW log book, the official narrative report of the mission he was lost on, and a letter from his family while he was in Italy.

Interview with Zan Holmes Jr., a Methodist pastor and resident of Hamilton Park from Waco, Texas. Holmes discusses his family background, education, seminary, moving to Hamilton Park, building a church, political activity, local development and related issues, youth activities, the schools, and desegregation.

Interview with Dr. James Dietz, former medical director of the Kaiser Permanente-Prudential Insurance joint venture from Cleveland, Ohio. Dietz discusses his educational background, joining Kaiser Permanente and being part of a pre-paid group practice, becoming medical director of the Permanente-Prudential partnership and moving to Texas, recruiting practitioners, boards, business, reception of the company in Texas, costs and competition, and the end of the joint venture.

Interview with Jacob Bekker, a Holocaust survivor from Warsaw, Poland. Bekker discusses his upbringing, life for Jews in Warsaw before the war, antisemitism in Warsaw and discrimination, the invasion of Poland, Germans and Poles identifying Jews and singling them out for labor, fleeing to Russia and working there, returning to Poland after the war, and leaving for Israel.

Interview with Selwyn Burgin, a former member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from Big Sandy, Texas. Burgin discusses growing up, joining the CCC in 1934, assignment to a camp at Maydelle, Texas, boxing on his first night in the barracks, transfer to Lindale, projects worked, engineering training, leave and recreation, transfer to Marshall, paperwork, the relationship between CCC workers and local residents, and thoughts on bringing back the CCC for current generations.

The concept of "And Then She Said" evolved while I was working on the music for the production of "Medea-Plays" conceived and directed by Ed Isser at the Stanford Drama department. Ed had the ingenious idea to use four narrators, backstage, each reciting a different version of the Medea story in a different language (Greek, Latin, French, or German), while four actors on the center stage spoke in English. The rich musical possibilities that this idea offered attracted me immediately. With Ed's permission, I recorded the four narrators in the four languages. They spoke the text just as in the play, but I also included some variations such as having them whisper the text, or sing it on certain specified pitches. I then processed those recordings with a Lexicon digital reverberator, and combined them with some of the computer-generated sounds I had used for the original Medea score. The actress does not play the role of Medea; instead I chose to juxtapose the Greek myth and an opposite idea: the Judeo-Christian symbolism of child sacrifice as the ultimate religious commitment, as in the stories of Isaac and Jesus. Interview with the Rev. Ocie Turner, a minister at New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dallas, Marine WWII veteran, and a longtime resident of the Hamilton Park neighborhood, from Mexia, Texas. Turner discusses his family background, education, serving in the Marine Corps at the Battle of Iwo Jima, working as a butcher in Dallas, working in the oil and gas industry, buying his house in Hamilton Park, the growth and development of the neighborhood, community organizations, local businesses, the schools and his children's education, and changes in the neighborhood over time.

David R. “Buff” Honodel was a cocky young man with an inflated self-image when he arrived in 1969 at his base in Udorn, Thailand. His war was not in Vietnam; it was a secret one in the skies of a neighboring country almost unknown in America, attacking the Ho Chi Minh Trail that fed soldiers and supplies from North Vietnam into the South. Stateside he learned the art of flying the F-4, but in combat, the bomb-loaded fighter handled differently, targets shot back, and people suffered. Inert training ordnance was replaced by lethal weapons. In the air, a routine day mission turned into an unexpected duel with a deadly adversary. Complacency during a long night mission escorting a gunship almost led to death. A best friend died just before New Year’s. A RF-4 crashed into the base late in Buff’s tour of duty. The reader will experience Buff’s war from the cockpit of a supersonic F-4D Phantom II, doing 5-G pullouts after dropping six 500-pound bombs on trucks hidden beneath triple jungle canopy. These were well defended by a skillful, elusive, determined enemy firing back with 37mm anti-aircraft fire and tracers in the sky. The man who left the States …
