Kudzu

Photograph of Kudzu at roadside. Planted by CCC boys in 1939. This Japanese plant is famous in the south for controlling gullies and steep land. It High in protein it is excellent forage.

Guar

Photograph of Guar being grown on soil unit 12 where it had been very difficlut to secure a stand of any crop. Guar is grown as a soil improving crop. Cooperators rotation on this land is guar and cotton. Farmer estimates cotton yeilds have increased 30% since he has been using Guar in his rotation.

Guar Trial Planting

Photograph of Bill Storm, County Agent, and Ted Lahman, WUC, examine a trial planting of Guar. Six to eight pounds of seed planted per acre, in 36 inch rows. A good stand was received and indications are that a good seed harvest will be made. However, some drought damage was present. Guar shows promise as a catch crop in this area of Oklahoma. More observations are needed to see if stubble will control wind erosion and if sub-soil moisture is lowered to the point of affecting the following year's crop.

Concord Grape Vineyard

Photograph of showing the average growth of the 20 year old ten acre Concord Grape vineyard. The chorty soil was terraced before grapes were set. Soil building crop of vetch, yellow hop clover, lespedeza, and rye grass is maintained at all times except for short period during the final growth and ripening of the fruit. Phospate is applied under the legumes. A regular spray schedule has been maintained. There has never been a failure to produce a fair crop and they have produced 3000 bushels several times.

Irrigation

Land Leveling

Photograph of a float for leveling land which will be used for irrigating farming. This float is 12 feet wide and 30 feet long and is constucted with 3x12 inch lumber. The grader blade in the center is adjustable. Ralph Mitchell, owner, using float. This float was costructed in farmers shop at the cost of 40 to 50 dollars.
