[The Suitability of Five Denton County Clays for Use in High School Ceramics Classes: Plates]

Plates of ceramic samples to accompany a thesis studying the suitability of five clays from the vicinity of Denton, Texas for use in high-school ceramics classes. The abundance of natural clays in Denton County and throughout the state of Texas, the ease with which clays may be obtained, and the ease with which they may be refined for use provide almost unlimited teaching possibilities in high-school art classes. This study of five Denton County clays has proved informative in several respects. It has shown that within the vicinity of Denton there are clays that are suitable for high-school use. Although all these clays may be suitable for one technique of pottery making each may not be suitable for all techniques. Many clays may be used after refining by a simple, quick process without the use of expensive and complicated equipment. Simple glazes, which have an aesthetic as well as a utilitarian value, may be compounded to fit these clays.

Symphony No. I, "An American Symphony"

In Symphony No.I, the form of the first movement follows the broad outlines of the sonata. The second movement is in Rondo form, the first section of which has a definite ABA character, the second part has but a single theme extended in treatment, and the third section a recapitulation of the first. The final movement again uses the ABA form.

The Construction and Recording of an Objective Test of Musical Literacy for Secondary School and College Students (open access)

The Construction and Recording of an Objective Test of Musical Literacy for Secondary School and College Students

The problem of teaching music-reading to the masses of musically-illiterate children and adults weighs heavily on the hearts and minds of all competent, conscientious music teachers. This test of music-reading ability has been devised in the hope that it will help music students and teachers to determine specific weaknesses of one kind or another, in the individual students musical comprehension.

Theme and Mutations (open access)

Theme and Mutations

The purpose of this composition is to demonstrate the creative stimuli offered a composer by The Schillinger System of Musical Composition. To illustrate this creative stimuli offered a composer, the writer has composed an extremely diverse, yet homogenous musical continuity from the elements contained in an eight measure theme. The sections of this composition are titled mutations, for though they are all inherently related to the theme, this relationship often appears fortuitous. The term variation usually implies structural alterations that are readily apparent.

Problem of the Arrangement for Two Pianos of Iberia by I. Albeniz (open access)

Problem of the Arrangement for Two Pianos of Iberia by I. Albeniz

The literal meaning of "transcription" is "written across"; in freer terminology it is "the musical counter-part of literary translation." The terms "arrangement" and "transcription: are used synonymously by nearly all musical dictionaries. However, even then , there is often a distinction made, an arrangement being considered to adhere strictly to the original text while a transcription admits of creative participation on part of the arranger, ranging from the simple transference of musical medium to the complete reworking of a composition with additions and modifications.

Organization and Production of an Original Musical Playlet, A May Comedy (open access)

Organization and Production of an Original Musical Playlet, A May Comedy

The purpose in writing this thesis is to describe program material for a musical performance to be presented by the public school music classes of the Stephenville Public Schools, Grades IV to VIII, and the means taken to further musical growth on the part of several hundred children through participation in this program. Most musical plays provide for only a small number of main characters and only one chorus. To fit the need of classes in this particular school, a large cast is necessary, and also a play in which several different groups or choruses may participate. To illustrate this need for program material in the public school music classes, this musical playlet, "A May Comedy", was written, and the details of its presentation given.

Allegro For Orchestra In C Minor (open access)

Allegro For Orchestra In C Minor

The composer has earnestly sought to capture in this work, Allegra for Orchestra in C minor, the clarity and simplicity that is commonly associated with works of the Classic Period of musical composition. He has tried to accomplish this by making use of musical composition. He has tried to accomplish this by making use of present day approaches toward musical composition, yet trying to delete the cleverness, the bizarre effects, and the trite pomposity that one finds so prevalent in much of the music that has been written since the beginning of the twentieth century. This effort toward simplicity extends to form, harmonic content, texture, and instrumentation.

An Evaluation of Present Practice in the Education of School Music Teachers in Texas (open access)

An Evaluation of Present Practice in the Education of School Music Teachers in Texas

For a long time there has been a growing conviction among the music graduates from colleges in Texas that the training of music teachers has been limited both from the standpoint of the number of hours offered in music for a degree and of the adequacy of the training received. The trends in music teacher education in Texas need to be evaluated in order to determine whether or not teacher training in this state is adequate. In comparing the adequacy of the school curriculum as far as the number of hours and courses is concerned, McEachern's A Survey and Evaluation of the Education of School Music Teachers in the United States will be used as a source of comparison, since this study is inclusive of the curricula of colleges over the United States.

A Stylistic Analysis of the Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra by Harl McDonald (open access)

A Stylistic Analysis of the Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra by Harl McDonald

The purpose of the following study is to make to stylistic analysis, on the basis of form, harmony, melody, and rhythm, of the Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra by Harl McDonald, a twentieth-century American composer. When a composer begins the composition of a concerto he is faced with a series of specific problems, e.g., the degree of prominence to be given the soloist in relation to the orchestra, the technique of the solo instrument, the traditional first movement sonata form, and the balance between solo and orchestra in regard to tone color and sound mass. By determining the elements of style typical of this particular work, the investigator aims to set forth in a general way to how the composer treated each of the problems stated above. The concerto for Two Pianos was selected for study because of its modernity and because of the writer's active interest in works for this medium.

A Study of Personnel Policies in North Texas State Teachers College as Compared With Those of Twenty-Five Other Institutions of Higher Learning (open access)

A Study of Personnel Policies in North Texas State Teachers College as Compared With Those of Twenty-Five Other Institutions of Higher Learning

This study of personnel policies in college and universities includes such phrases as administrative control, classification and distribution of positions, selection and appointment, terms of employment, teaching loads, and appraisal and interpretation of personnel policies. This study is planned to provide data on the policies with regard to the non-teaching staff as well as those of the teaching staff. From this study the writer concludes that strong personnel policies are not being developed by the twenty-five colleges and universities studied. The administrative officers apparently are largely unaware of the vital needs of such policies, and the members of the staff are reported to have little representation in formulating the policies which are adopted. Furthermore, it is evident that colleges and universities are not taking the lead in the unification of personnel policies in institutions of higher learning, and the worth of each individual employed by the institutions is not being recognized.

Problem of the Arrangement for two Pianos of Sedlak by Jindr. Jindrich and Prelude, op. 34, no. 5, by Dmitri Shostakovich (open access)

Problem of the Arrangement for two Pianos of Sedlak by Jindr. Jindrich and Prelude, op. 34, no. 5, by Dmitri Shostakovich

This study was prompted by the writer's interest and experience in the field of two-piano performance. At the beginning of this writer's two-piano work the available material was scarce, and much of it was inadequate in quality from the standpoint of both composition and arrangement. It seems strange that this particular form of chamber music, so delightful to play and so enjoyable to listen to, did not completely take popular fancy until the twentieth century. During the past ten years however, teachers are realizing the benefits derived from training students in two-piano playing. There is no doubt in the writer's opinion that two-piano concerts will henceforth always be in demand.

A Stylistic Analysis of Schumann's Concerto in A Minor (open access)

A Stylistic Analysis of Schumann's Concerto in A Minor

The purpose if this study is to make an analysis of the structural elements and stylistic characteristics in the Concerto in A Minor for Piano by the nineteenth century German composer, Robert Schumann. These elements include the composer's treatment of melody, rhythm, form, and piano idiom. This problem has been limited to a stylistic analysis of Schumann's only concerto in A minor for piano and orchestra, Op. 54. Its purpose is to make an analysis of the structural and stylistic elements in the Concerto. These include the composer's treatment of melody, rhythm, form and the piano idiom. Since the matter of harmony is not of primary importance in this work, it is not discussed here. The present study does not include a consideration of the orchestral score and its relationship to the piano; however mention of it is made in the chapter on piano idiom.

A Study of the Native Texas Clays Relative to Their Value for Pottery Making in the Public Schools (open access)

A Study of the Native Texas Clays Relative to Their Value for Pottery Making in the Public Schools

The art of making pottery has long been recognized as a valuable educational activity, both for its cultural value and for the opportunity it presents for creative activity. However, the impression is prevalent among school teachers and administrators that the making of pottery requires the purchase of raw material as well as an expensive kiln. For this reason few schools have given pottery making a place in school activities. Experiments with Texas clays have shown conclusively that pottery making is a comparatively simple and inexpensive undertaking. The purpose of this study is to present and evaluate these experiments so that other Texas teachers may utilize them in their work, especially in the elementary art classes of the public schools.
