Determination of Shapes of Boattail Bodies of Revolution for Minimum Wave Drag

"By use of an approximate equation for the wave drag of slender bodies of revolution in a supersonic flow field, the optimum shapes of certain boattail bodies are determined for minimum wave drag. The properties of three specific families of bodies are determined, the first family consisting of bodies having a given length and base area and a contour passing through a prescribed point between the nose and base, the second family having fixed length, base area, and maximum area, and the third family having given length, volume, and base area. The method presented is easily generalized to determine minimum-wave-drag profile shapes which have contours that must pass through any prescribed number of points" (p. 1).

Investigation of Torsion Creep-to-Rupture Properties of N-155 Alloy

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the torsion creep-to-rupture properties on the alloy steel N-155. Rupture times in the 10-to-1000-hour range were considered and tests were made at the temperatures 1200, 1350, and 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Comparisons of the effects of simple combined stresses were made with tension creep-to-rupture properties.

Effects of leading-edge slats on the aerodynamic characteristics of a 45 degree sweepback wing-fuselage configuration at Mach numbers of 0.4 to 1.03

Report presenting an investigation in the transonic tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing-fuselage combination with a 45 degree sweptback wing with NACA 65A006 airfoil sections, an aspect ratio of 4, taper ratio of 0.6, and incorporating outboard leading-edge slats. Results lift characteristics, influence of slats on wing pressure distribution, drag characteristics, lift-drag ratio characteristics, and pitching-moment characteristics are provided.

Application of the Analogy Between Water Flow With a Free Surface and Two-Dimensional Compressible Gas Flow

"The theory of the hydraulic analogy -- that is, the analogy between water flow with a free surface and two-dimensional compressible gas flow -- and the limitations and conditions of the analogy are discussed. A test was run using the hydraulic analogy as applied to the flow about circular cylinders of various diameters at subsonic velocities extending into the supercritical range. The apparatus and techniques used in this application are described and criticized" (p. 311).

HRP Radiation Corrosion Studies

A fifth in-pile loop experiment, L-4-8, was completed. The loop operated in-pile for a total of 1637 hr, during which time the LITR energy output was 4377 Mwhr. The average fission power in the loop based o cesium analyses was 622 w when the LITR was at full power (3 Mw). Based on oxygen data, the generalized corrosion rate for the first 300 hr was 4.0 mpy; the rate for the remaining 1357 hr was 0.7 mpy. The nickel data gave parallel results. The corrosion of the type 347 stainless steel, Zircaloy-2, and Ti-55AX [unintelligible] exposed in the core and in in-line holders was generally consistent with that observed in previous in-pile loop experiments. Some differences with steel were attributed to the fact that this was the first loop containing steel specimens operated with 0.04 m H2SO4 present in the uranyl sulfate charge solution (0.17 m UO2SO4, 0.03 m CuSO4). Stress specimens, made from the alloys Zircaloy-2, type 17-4 PH stainless steel, and Ti-C-130-AM, were exposed in care, in-line, and pressurizer locations. Microscopic examination and average weight loss gave no indication of effects attributable to the stressed condition of the specimens.

Technical report. From Abstract : "The vapor pressures of crystalline VCl2, VBr2, VCl3 and VBr3 have been measured by the Knudsen effusion method using pyrex and Vycor effusion cells. ... During the measurements on VCl3 and VBr3 dissociation and disproportionation of the samples occurred simultaneously with the simple vaporization. However, because the product of each of these processes was collected separately during an experiment, the vapor pressure due to sublimation was obtained without difficulty."

From Summary: "The present investigation was conducted to determine, from low-speed tests in the Langley stability tunnel, the static and rotary derivatives of a 1/9-scale model of the Republic F-91 airplane and various of its components (including the effects of wing incidence) and to determine the accuracy with which the period and damping of the lateral oscillation of the airplane could be calculated by using these experimentally between flight and calculated period and damping of the lateral oscillation were made for Mach numbers from 0.4 to 0.9 at an altitude of 20,000 feet for 0 degrees wing incidence and several other wing incidences. Some comparisons were made of the static and rotary derivatives of the model and derivatives estimated by available procedures."

"The tests reported herein were made for the purpose of determining the high-speed load distribution on the wing of a 3/16 scale model of a scout-bomber airplane. Comparisons are made between the root bending-moment and section torsional-moment coefficients as obtained experimentally and derived analytically. The results show good correlation for the bending-moment coefficients but considerable disagreement for the torsional-moment coefficients" (p. 1).

Investigation of X24C-2 10-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor 2: Effect of Inlet-Air Pressure and Temperature of Performance

Effect of inlet-air pressure and temperature on the performance of the X24-2 10-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor from the X24C-2 turbojet engine was evaluated. Speeds of 80, 89, and 100 percent of equivalent design speed with inlet-air pressures of 6 and 12 inches of mercury absolute and inlet-air temperaures of approximately 538 degrees, 459 degrees,and 419 degrees R ( 79 degrees, 0 degrees, and minus 40 degrees F). Results were compared with prior investigations.

Unstable Particles As Targets In Scattering Experiments

A general method is suggested for analyzing the scattering of particle A by particle B, leading to three or more final particles, in order to obtain the cross section for the interaction of A with a particle which is virtually contained in B. Binding complications are absent if a plausible assumption about the location and residues of poles in the S-matrix is accepted. The method is useful for unstable particles from which free targets cannot be made; the special examples of pion and neutron targets are discussed in detail.
