Using requirements of analyticity and the unitarity of the S-matrix we obtain the dependence of a transition amplitude on the invariant mass of two particles strongly coupled to other two particle channels. As an example, we consider the production of a Σπ state near the Y*₀ resonance assuming it is coupled to a KN state in an s 1/2 state.

Techniques for Estimating the Specific Retention Properties of Hanford Soils

Disposal on a specific retention basic of certain radioactive liquid waste solutions emanating from separations from separations plants has been practiced at Hanford since 1944. As used at Hanford, the term "specific retention" is defined as that volume of waste liquids that may be disposed to the soil* and be held against the force of gravity by the molecular attraction between sand grains and the surface tension of the water, when expressed as percent of packed soil volume. In practice it represents the volume of liquid that may be discharged to a disposal pit of known dimensions without leakage to the ground, water, expressed as percent of the total volume of a column of soil with the same cross section as the pit, and extending from the bottom of the pit to the water table. It is recognized that some degree of lateral spreading will occur which has the effect of enlarging the volume of soil contacted by the liquid.

709 Program for Reduction of Exponential Pile Data

A multi-purpose program for processing exponential data has been prepared for the 709 computer. The main purposes of the program is to compute the material buckling from raw data (given counts, time, and counter information) or from previously calculated Athermal's. It is also possible to compute only CeCh (end and harmonic corrections) for a given B11 or series if B11's no counting data being entered. In every case, pile measurements must be submitted as input for corrections.

During the past year notable progress was made in several laboratories on design for linear accelerators in the energy range up to and above 1 Bev. Interest in linacs for this energy centers on two possible applications: first, as injectors for 300 to 1000 Bev synchrotrons, and second, as sources of intense meson beams. To review this progress, a conference jointly sponsored by the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Yale University was held at Brookhaven during the week of August 20, 1962.

Hanford Use of Experimental Water Filter Plant

An improved method of water plant control has been developed at Hanford which employs a sensitive turbidiy measuring microphorometer and a model water filtration plant. The microphotometer operates on a light scattering principle and is accurate in the range of 0.0 to 0.1 parts per million turbidity. The model filter plant used is a five gallon per minute plant which can simulate the conditions normally occurring in the large water plants. It is the purpose of this report to describe the model filter plant and to demonstrate the value of the model and microphotometer for effective water plant control and water plant design scoping.

Incontamination of Pig Skin Contaminated With a Plutonium Solution

Different methods of decontaminating plutonium contaminated skin were studied by contamination localized areas of pig skin and then testing the different decontamination methods. Results indicate that the most effective of the decontamination methods tested involved the application of a plastic adherent material to the skin and its later removal by peeling.

Approximate Models for Distributed-Parameter Heat-Transfer Systems

Summary: The use of dimensionless-parameter frequency response diagrams to determine accuracies of lumped-parameter approximations is demonstrated by two examples: calculation of the heat flux at the surface of a semi-infinite solid due to temperature fluctuations of an adjacent fluid; and the response of a counterflow heat exchanger to inlet fluid temperature perturbations. Dimensionless system parameters make it possible to use general-purpose plots to find the error in particular approximations as a function of the frequency of perturbation. Such plots are directly applicable to control-system stability problems, where the highest frequency of interest is usually apparent.

Abstract: The purpose of this report is to outline the work done at the Radiation Laboratory toward the development of a magnetic field measuring device using the phenomenon of nuclear resonance. While the work described here is far from complete, it has served to indicate the limitations of the method as well as some of its possibilities. For reasons which will become apparent, the project is being discontinued. It is hoped that this report will serve as a starting point should the work be continued at some later time and that some of the mistakes already made need not be repeated.

Multigroup Methods for Neutron Diffusion Problems

Abstract: "The age-diffusion is adequate to describe the neutron behavior of a very large class of nonthermal reactors (all except those whose dimensions are comparable to the neutron mean free path). Thus, a convenient means of obtaining an accurate solution to this equation is very useful for general reactor calculations. Methods for reducing the age-diffusion equation to a finite set of coupled ordinary differential equations, called multigroup equations, are described. The relative merits of several alternate schemes are discussed. The multigroup equations may be solved by iterative procedures based on an assumed spatial distribution of the fission source neutrons. In practice the initially assumed source shape is accurate enough so that additional iterations are unnecessary. Analytical and numerical methods for solving the multigroup equations with the assumed source are discussed. The adjoint equations are also reduced to multigroup form, and examples of the adjoint function in obtaining improved reactivity values are given."

Report presenting a flight investigation using four rocket-propelled models of low-aspect-ratio tailless configurations between Mach numbers 0.7 and 1.35. The configurations investigated were a 45 degree delta model with NACA 63A010 airfoil sections parallel to free stream, a 45 degree delta-wing model with NACA 63A006 airfoil sections parallel to free stream, a 37.5 degree swept-tapered wing model with NACA 64(sub 1)A012 sections perpendicular to quarter chord, and a 39 degree swept-tapered-wing model with NACA 64A006 airfoil sections perpendicular to quarter chord. Results regarding time histories, static longitudinal stability, dynamic longitudinal stability, order of oscillation frequency, rotational damping in pitch, and drag are provided.

Temperature response of turbine-blade metal covered with oxide coatings supplied by fuel additives

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of turbine-blade coatings, supplied by fuel additives, on heat transfer with combustor exhaust gases to an S-816 alloy blade. Two fuel additives were used. The results indicated that the fuel additives provided an oxide coating on the combustor-liner wall and other metal parts, including the blade, exposed to the exhaust gas.

Results of measurements of maximum lift and buffeting intensities obtained during flight investigation of the Northrop X-4 research airplane

The variation of the intensity of buffeting experienced throughout the operational region of the semitailless Northrop X-4 airplane and the values of maximum and peak normal-force coefficients in the Mach number range from 0.42 to 0.92 have been determined. The results are compared with data obtained with the swept-wing Douglas D-558-II airplane.

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of a number of leading-edge flaps on the aerodynamic characteristics in pitch of a wing-fuselage configuration with a 45 degree sweptback wing. All of the flaps were found to reduce the drag in the medium lift range , but there were no significantly large effects on the lift characteristics for any of the arrangements studied.

Effect of Design Over-All Compressor Pressure Ratio Division on Acceleration Characteristics of Three Hypothetical Two-Spool Turbojet Engines

The engines, each with a compressor overall total-pressure ratio of 12 and a design inner-turbine-inlet temperature of 2500 degrees R, were investigated at static sea-level conditions to determine the effect on transient performance of varying the desitn pressure ratio divisions 2-6, 3-4, and 4-3 between the outer and inner compressors. The transient considered was an acceleration from 40 to 100 percent design thrust. When the outer compressor of each engine reached design speed, the inner compressors were overspeeding, the maximum being only 1.7 over design mechanical speed. Acceleration times for the three engines were equal.

Comparison of Measured Efficiencies of Nine Turbine Designs with Efficiencies Predicted by Two Empirical Methods

Empirical methods of Ainley and Kochendorfer and Nettles were used to predict performances of nine turbine designs. Measured and predicted performances were compared. Appropriate values of blade-loss parameter were determined for the method of Kochendorfer and Nettles. The measured design-point efficiencies were lower than predicted by as much as 0.09 (Ainley and 0.07 (Kochendorfer and Nettles).
