Caption: "A blazing Stephens County gas well lighted the sky across perhaps 80 miles of southwestern Oklahoma Thursday night as flames soared high into the air over the crumpled derrick. One observer said he was able to read a newspaper by the light that was visible three-quarters of a mile from the well. With its roar almost deafening at times, the well sent flames earlier in the day 150 to 200 feet into the air from the center of a 100-acre corn field, the drilling site......Joe B. Kennedy, Tulsa, president of Sinclair Oil and Gas Co., said there was some indication the hole might be bridging which might seal off the flow of gas. On the otherhand, he said, the lessening of the height of the flames might indicate drillers had struck only a small pocket of gas which would soon burn out. Many residents of the area could not agree that the flames diminished appreciably. The well blew out about 1 a.m. Thursday. It was being drilled by O'Neal-Garvin drilling Co. of Duncan for Sinclair...Thursday night, weel-servicing personnel of the Halliburton Co. of Duncan were on hand, observing …

If the deal with early day Oklahoma City, there's a place they can be used. It's the Charles M. France room on the fourth floor of the main library. The France room houses the Local History collection which includes books, newspaper, photographes and other materials pertaining to the exciting past and present of Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County. The room is named for a former library building committee chirman who died in 1952. France, who had contributed three distinctive pieces of furniture to the room, was leader of the project to build the room. Open in 1953 After his death, the city council, upon recommendation of the library board, approved completion of the room as originally planned from library building funds.
