Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "When Oklahomans talk about "scenic beauty," it's mostly about the rugged stretches in the southeast. But southwestern Oklahoma has some beautiful spots, too. The Wichita mountains which stretch west of Lawton almost to Altus are impressively rough and rugged. Moreover, they are dotted with small lakes and threaded with pretty creeks. the picture above is of Lake Altus, which almost surrounds Quartz mountain state park. Camile Carter and Ann Thaggard, both of Altus, rest on one of the granite boulders which line the lake shore. (T-4-15-54) This is how Lake Altus Appeared in 1949 Here is a 1949 picture of Lake Altus taken from approximately the same point as the picture on the opposite page. The mountain whcih shows well above the water in the picture taken this month is the island peak which juts out of the water in the background here."

Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "This isn't a visitor from Mars. It's a researcher in the sensory isolation tank at VA hospital. The latex mask is connected to breathing tubes. You may think you want to get away from it all. But a research project at Veterans Admisistration hospital which provides maximum isolation from people and things proves you can get too much peace and quiet - in a hurry. Masked researchers participating in the project look like carlooned invaders from another planet. However, while the research has application to space travel, Dr. Jay T. Shurley, chief og psychiatry at VA hospital, insists he is more interested in probing the mysteries of the mental illnesses of earthbound subjects. "This world's problems intiated the research and the space age overtook us," Dr. Shurley points out. The stimulus-proof chamber on the hospital grounds took a year and one-half to build under direction of VA's engineering officer Harry Flewelling......It sounds restful. But the few subjects who have tried it since the labrotory was completed have only been able to take it a maximum of three hours.
